1 Middle Health Curriculum 6 th Grade Health Units: High Risk Behaviors Decision Making Recognize how decisions can affect overall health Identify and apply the steps of decision making process to real life situations Analyze the impact of high risk decision making Goal setting Accident and Injury Prevention Identify the need for personal safety precautions Recognize the link between decision making and personal safety Drug Prevention Analyze and describe the difference between drug use, misuse and abuse Investigate the effects of drugs use on the body Define gateway drug and identify drugs commonly referred to as such Alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and prescription drugs Identify risk and protective factors associated with drug use

Students will understand how decisions can affect overall health Students will understand how engaging in high risk behaviors can lead to accidents and injuries Students will understand how drug use can affect overall health How do the decisions you make impact your overall wellness? the future? Students will understand the components of Health/Wellness How do the decisions you make impact your overall wellness? the future? 6 Unit: Growth and Development Subject Health Grade Level 7th Unit First Aid and CPR Time Frame 4 Classes B: Know and apply appropriate emergency responses. Students will know and apply appropriate emergency responses. What is the appropriate response to an emergency situation? Someone else will help. I can get in legal trouble if I hurt someone while performing CPR. The correct steps while dealing with an emergency situation. Recognize and respond to emergency situation scenarios. Perform the proper techniques of CPR and abdominal thrusts. Practice using an AED.

7 Unit: Disease Prevention Subject Health Grade Level 8th Unit Disease Prevention Time Frame 6 Classes E: Identify health problems that can occur throughout life and describe ways to prevent them A: Analyze factors that impact growth and development between adolescence and adulthood. Students will understand what a disease is, and the two types of diseases (communicable/non communicable) Students will understand symptoms and treatments of non communicable and communicable diseases (including HIV/AIDS and STIs) How do the decisions you make impact your overall wellness and the wellness of others? the future? HIV and AIDS are the same thing STIs can only be spread through sexual intercourse The definition of disease and the two types of diseases Symptoms of non communicable/communicable disease Prevalent STIs and ways they are spread The difference between HIV and AIDS, and ways to prevent the spread of HIV Ways to prevent the spread of communicable disease Distinguish the difference between communicable and non communicable diseases Recognize the impact communicable diseases can have on the community Analyze the impact of diseases on overall wellness

8 Unit: Mental/Emotional Wellness Subject Health Grade Level 8th Unit Mental and Emotional Health Time Frame 6 Classes A: Analyze factors that impact growth and development between adolescence and adulthood. The students will understand the importance of good mental/emotional health and its relationship to overall wellness How do the decisions you make impact your overall wellness and the wellness of others the future I am alone and no one understands the way I feel If I tell an adult about my feelings/feelings of a friend I will get in trouble There s no help available for me Stress is always bad Common emotions and healthy ways to express them Symptoms of mental health illnesses/disorders including anxiety, depression, and eating disorders Warning signs of suicide and resources available to help prevent teen suicide The definition of stress The impact stress can have on overall wellness Identify healthy ways to express emotions Identify ways to get help/treatment for mental health symptoms/difficulties Apply healthy stress management techniques
