Fall 2012 The freshmen class of Fall 2012 includes 518 students who entered the University in Summer 2012 or Fall Demographically, almost sixty-two percent (320) of the new freshmen are female, and seventy-five percent (388) are from racial or ethnic minority groups. Students with a Baptist religious affiliation make up twenty-three percent (23.2%) of the group, a decrease of six percent from last year. For students with known addresses, 496 (96.1%) have Texas as their state of permanent address, representing 46 counties. Students from Harris, Fort Bend, and Brazoria county make up 75.8% of the class, down almost five percent from last year. Just under ninety-four percent of the class are U.S. citizens. Among students who reported a high school class ranking, nearly sixty percent were in the top quartile of their high school graduating classes. The class had a mean score of 1102 for the SAT and 24 for the ACT examination. Twenty-one percent of students declared a major in Biology, while 17 percent declared Nursing and 8.5% were undecided. Fall 2011 The freshmen class of Fall 2011 includes 500 students who entered the University in Summer 2011 or Fall Demographically, more than sixty-five percent (327) of the new freshmen are female, and seventy-three percent (365) are from racial or ethnic minority groups. For students with known addresses, 478 (95.6%) have Texas as their state of permanent address, representing 44 counties. Students from Harris, Fort Bend, and Brazoria county make up 80.3% of the class (although the percentage of students from Harris declined six percent while the percentage of students from Fort Bend increased almost five percent). Ninety-four percent of the class are U.S. citizens. Among students who reported a high school class ranking, nearly sixty-four percent were in the top quartile of their high school graduating classes. The class had a mean score of 1096 for the SAT and 24 for the ACT examination. Approximately 25 percent of students declared a major in Biology, while 14 percent declared Nursing and 9 percent were undecided.. Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness 7502 Fondren Road Houston, Texas

2 2 Test Score Calculations For students with both an SAT and ACT score, only one score is counted. The ACT score is converted into the equivalent SAT score and compared to the actual SAT score, and only the higher is retained. Additionally, for students with multiple SAT test scores, the highest verbal and math subscores (from any test date) are added to get the student's final SAT score. For Fall 2006, this procedure resulted in an increase of approximately 6 points on the average SAT score, from 1074 to Prior to Fall 2007, SAT scores were reported using Recruitment PLUS. Recruitment PLUS converted all ACT scores to an equivalent SAT score, and included the converted scores in the final mean. 1 Due to the change from the double-major system to a primarily single-major system, the table by First and Second majors has been removed. In Fall 2011, only one freshman had a double major, and no freshman had a double major in Fall 2012.
