2 Colchester Academy Preface to all policies and procedures Colchester Academy aims to be the first choice provider of outstanding learning for the community of Colchester and beyond. The Academy will provide exciting and challenging academic, vocational and social learning opportunities locally and nationally. The Academy will prepare students for a rapidly changing world and nurture a philosophy of lifelong learning that they will maintain into adulthood. All students and staff will be nurtured, motivated and encouraged to be the best they can be. Colchester Academy s ethos is founded on a set of key principles which will inspire and be evident in all the Academy does. These principles are: Harnessing the specialisms of English and Health Sciences. A culture of high aspirations, high achievement and success for all. Respect for others and self, with all people feeling valued. A secure and healthy environment which is at the heart of the community. 2

3 AIMS Colchester Academy To promote and develop a learning culture within the Academy that recognises the importance and desirability of high student attainment and achievement. To create the most appropriate learning environment for students to progress as fast and as far they can. To develop a wider range of learning opportunities to suit different learning styles, interests and abilities. To develop an enriched curriculum to give More Able/Gifted and Talented students the opportunity to use their skills across the curriculum. To encourage students to develop high aspirations relating to career/education opportunities post 16. DEFINITION DfE and Ofsted define Gifted and Talented as the following: Children and young people with one or more abilities developed to a level significantly ahead of their year group (or with the potential to develop those abilities). At Colchester Academy, we shall use the term Gifted and Talented to refer to students with such abilities. We appreciate that Gifted and Talented students can be: Good all-rounders. High achievers in one area. Of high ability but have poor writing skills. Varied in degrees of motivation and personal organisation. IDENTIFICATION The process of identification is inclusive and the Academy strives to ensure that the register of identified students represents the socio/economic and cultural backgrounds of the wider student population. Gifted and Talented students are identified by making a judgement on an analysis of a broad source of information including: Test scores including CAT, KS2, and internal teacher assessment. Faculty identification of Gifted and Talented students. Form Tutors. Recommendation from Primary Schools (Year 7 cohort). Through identification, the Academy s Gifted and Talented student register will be created for each year group. Identified students will be monitored by both subject and pastoral staff. Overall responsibility for this monitoring will be held by the member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) in charge of Gifted and Talented students. The register will be reviewed on an annual basis (September). Students may however be added to the register at any time during the academic year following identification using the established criteria. 3

4 Colchester Academy CURRICULUM The Academy will provide Gifted and Talented students with their full entitlement to the National Curriculum and additionally, provide access to curriculum enhancement. Each faculty is responsible for developing varied and challenging learning opportunities for Gifted and Talented students. They will ensure that there is appropriate differentiation and challenge in both classwork and homework tasks. Such differentiation may relate to task, outcome, pace and extension opportunities. Schemes of Work will include provision for Gifted and Talented students. Faculty Leaders and SLT will evaluate current setting/group practices to ensure that the needs of Gifted and Talented students are met. Where appropriate, Gifted and Talented students will be given access to the study of additional subjects and given the opportunity to gain accredited qualifications. OUT OF CLASS ACTIVITIES All students identified as Gifted and Talented have access to a programme of enrichment activities. The following will be provided to ensure that students in these areas are given opportunities to practise and extend skill levels: Academy clubs/societies. Musical/Sporting Activities. Access to programmes such as Aim Higher. Subject Master Classes. Workshops delivered by Essex University. Collaborative learning with Gifted and Talented students from other schools. Extended links with Colchester Sixth Form Academy. Extended links with Essex University. 4

5 RESPONSIBILITES - CO-ORDINATION AND MONITORING Colchester Academy The Co-ordinator of the Gifted and Talented Provision: Overall responsibility for ensuring this policy is implemented. Overall responsibility for tracking the progress of all Gifted and Talented students and ensuring that effective tracking takes place by Team Leaders, Year Leaders and subject teachers with regard to academic targets and forecast grades/current working levels using the Academy s data tracking system according to agreed timetable. To coordinate and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of intervention strategies initiated to address underachievement. To be proactive in investigating appropriate subject specific developments relating to Gifted and Talented students and to discuss and disseminate these with other Team Leaders. To lead and manage an Academy enrichment programme and to monitor the impact of this on student progress. To manage the register of Gifted and Talented students ensuring that this is updated and also forms part of our termly Census. To assess whether any students on the Gifted and Talented register qualify for membership of any national Gifted and Talented organisation. To ensure that the Academy CPD Programme includes training to support the provision for Gifted and Talented students. Team Leader: To ensure that a scheme of work exists for each unit of work that includes appropriate extension activities designed to challenge and extend the Gifted and Talented students. To ensure through the effective monitoring of teaching and learning that lessons within the faculty are successful in engaging and extending Gifted and Talented students. To have an active role in the development of an Academy enrichment programme for Gifted and Talented students. To track effectively the progress of those students identified as being Gifted and Talented within their subject area using the Academy s data tracking system. To identify student underachievement, to implement appropriate intervention strategies, to communicate these with relevant stakeholders and to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of such intervention within the faculty. Subject Teacher: 5 To know which students in his/her classes are on the Gifted and Talented Students register. To plan and deliver lessons in line with the Academy s Teaching and Learning Policy which ensure that lessons are appropriately differentiated to extend and challenge Gifted and Talented students. To track the progress of Gifted and Talented students and to discuss this progress with appropriate parties e.g. Team Leader, Year Leader, student and parent. To discuss and implement appropriate intervention strategies where needed in liaison with Team Leader and to evaluate the impact of such strategies. To provide information with regard to the progress of Gifted and Talented students as required by Team Leader/Coordinator of Gifted and Talented Provision.

6 Colchester Academy Year Leader: To know which members of the year group are on the Gifted and Talented Students register. To track effectively the progress of Gifted and Talented students using the Academy s data tracking system. To identify and initiate appropriate and relevant intervention strategies in discussion with the Coordinator of Gifted and Talented Provision where deemed necessary. To encourage Gifted and Talented students to participate in the enrichment programme and to monitor such involvement. To resolve any pastoral issues that may impact on academic progress. Form Tutor: To know which members of the form group are on the Gifted and Talented Students register. To monitor the progress of the Gifted and Talented students in the form group, particularly through the Academic Tutoring process, and assist in resolving any pastoral issues that may impact on academic progress. PARENTS/CARERS/CARERS The Gifted and Talented Programme is a partnership between students, parents/carers and teachers. Parents/carers will be informed that their child has been identified as Gifted and Talented and given details of relevant information throughout the child s career at Colchester Academy. MONITORING, EVALUATION AND REVIEW The Governing Body will review this policy at least every three years and assess its implementation and effectiveness. The policy will be promoted and implemented throughout the Academy. 6
