1 CROSSHALL JUNIOR SCHOOL Dear Parent/Carer Government guidance, published in September 2014, states that your child should know: - all the multiplication and division facts in the two, five and ten multiplication tables by the end of Year Two; - all the multiplication and division facts in the three, four and eight multiplication tables by the end of Year Three; - and all multiplications and division facts for the multiplication tables up to 12 x 12 by the end of Year Four. Unless your child does know these number facts, he/she could struggle with basic maths skills and may fall behind. Please help by practising these with your child. Fold the answers and allow your child to check after each attempt. You could create your own if your child needs more practice sessions. The government has also published a list of words that children should know and spell and in which year they should know them. These and a list of core words that lower and upper school children must know are also contained in this pack. Children will be tested on their knowledge of number facts and spellings in school. Other resources that will support you and your child: Mathletics Why not listen to the times tables raps? They are great fun! Find the orange box on the righthand side of the screen labelled Times Tables Toons. Division facts are not chanted. Rainforest maths is worth looking at too contained within the site. 2 Parents Questionnaire Thank you to those parents who contributed to the Settling-in Survey. It is now closed. The results will be published in the Crosshall Connects. Next half term, the Change Champion meetings will be advertised. We will be asking for parents to discuss three school improvement areas: English, assessment and French across the key stage. SCHOOL EXPLAINED We have recently invested in a parents resource called School Explained. School Explained offers parents support, from teachers and other teaching experts. In the future, when our Learning Ladders pilot programme is finished, it is hoped that the two systems (Learning Ladders and School Explained) will be integrated, offering parents more personalised information about what is being studied. Examples: Conscience and conscious are related to science: conscience is simply science with the prefix conadded. These words come from the Latin word scio meaning I know. The word desperate, meaning without hope, is often pronounced in English as desp rate, but the sper- part comes from the Latin spero, meaning I hope, in which the e was clearly sounded. Familiar is related to family, so the /əә/ sound in the first syllable of familiar is spelt as a.
