2 What does G&T mean? Gifted and talented' is a term used in schools to describe children who have the potential to develop significantly beyond what is expected for their age. 'Gifted' refers to a child who has abilities in one or more academic subjects, such as English or maths. 'Talented' refers to a child who has skills in a practical area such as music, sport or art. 3 How do we identify the G&T students? G&T In each year group there are 150 students. On average there are 11to 15 students seen as G&T. Therefore they are our top 5%-10% of the cohort. MIDYIS all year sevens take a test which assesses their pure innate ability. (2,000 schools take this test.) Those with a score of 120 out of 149 are placed on the G&T list. Staff nominations once a year departments are asked to nominate students they consider to be G&T. November All these students are placed on our G&T register.
4 Examples of several programs to extend the most able Entry of students for: debating, poetry, mathematics, sporting, poetry, outside funded trips, mathematics, sporting, drama and art competitions. Curriculum opportunities: e.g: blocked pathways (EBAC), the extended project; Yr 9 G&T core Science (Yr 10- Additional, Yr 11-Further Additional Science); GCSE in Computing for G&T;; intervention via small groups and in Yr 11 PSHE and PE lessons. Head of Core subjects mentor Yr 11s. Also external art workshops; visiting speakers; working with Business/Community Groups in the local area Lunch time and after school clubs: Chess Club, Science Club, Film club, Young Enterprise, Duke of Edinburgh, Amnesty International Leadership opportunities: History Ambassadors, Sports Ambassadors, School council, school prefects, Head Girl and Head Boy, (and deputies), 6th Form Listeners and the School Committees, community support work. Recognition via: School colour system, and the VIVO reward system.

6 The Brilliant Club is a charity that works with schools in the new selective sector of state education in order to encourage and equip individuals with the skills required to access the very best universities around the world. The schools next programme is due to start after Christmas and will consist of two day trips to universities (Oxford and London) and 6 evening sessions here in school. The course is led by a PHD student who will teach the small group and develop their research and writing skills. At the end of the course each student will have to write a 2000 word report on a piece of research in order to graduate from the course.

8 Developments Establishing targeted provision for more able students through our curriculum offer and our extra curricular activities. We firmly believe that our most able students should be pushed and supported in order for them to reach their full potential. We provide a challenging environment that celebrates their success and achievements. We: * Use higher order thinking in many subject areas and across the key stages and push for resilience. We value students making mistakes. * Teachers peer observe and join learning walks as a tool for developing practice for Gifted and Talented provision. * Work sampling and Learning Walks with a Gifted and Talented focus. * Mentoring / providing support or interventions for underachieving Gifted and Talented students. * Raising achievement at A*-B. * The ongoing development of enrichment opportunities. * Training G&T students to work independently and to push themselves.
