2 THE NEED FOR LOCAL SUPPORT 2011 TOTAL REVENUES The Library acted as good stewards of taxpayer money by spending wisely and continuing cost-cutting savings implemented in As a result, 2011 expenses were a mere $8000 more than approximately $6.5 million. Over the past 2 years, the Library has reduced salary expenses (down 4.5% since 2009) through employee attrition and implemented cost saving strategies like self-serve holds at Woodbourne Library. 9% 60% 31% State Funding Local Operating Levy Other To protect its assets, the Library used Unique Management, to recover more than $43,000 in materials and outstanding fines/fees. Years of dwindling state financial support and the expiration of the current 10 year levy prompted the Library s decision to place a 3.0 mills operating levy on the November ballot. 8 MILLION 7 MILLION 6 MILLION 5 MILLION TOTAL EXPENDITURES Hundreds of citizen volunteers worked tirelessly to communicate the need for the operating levy. As a result, the issue not only passed by a 61% margin, but passed in 100% of the voting precincts, proving support for the Library exists throughout our community. GOOD STEWARDSHIP 4 MILLION 3 MILLION 2 MILLION 1 MILLION New levy funds begin in 2013, and will pay for ongoing operations as well as selected new services like the addition of Sunday hours year round at Centerville Library!

3 COLLECTIONS AND SERVICES TO FIT PATRON PREFERENCES In response to patron demand and usage patterns, books on tape and VHS collections were eliminated to make more room for CD books, DVDs and Blu-rays. New brightly colored signage makes CDs and CD books easier for patrons to locate. A mobile friendly website offers convenient access to hours and locations, ecatalog, databases and reading suggestions, anywhere, anytime. LIBRARY USAGE PATTERNS More patrons are visiting the Library online to download books and access online services! While most patrons visit both the physical and online libraries, visits to the Library s website were up 9.5% in Online visits now account for almost 40% of total library visits TOTAL VISITS 28% 34% 38% Centerville Library Woodbourne Library Website Patrons are taking the Library with them wherever they go thanks to a mobile website! In 2011 hits to the Library s mobile site increased by 40%, for a total of more than 50,000 hits. The most popular mobile pages include the Digital Collection, hours and locations, and mobile apps. As the economy recovers, annual checkout of library materials leveled off at 2.3 million. Patrons are still checking out printed books (1.3 million to be exact), but digital books are rapidly growing in popularity. In 2011, checkout of digital ebooks and eaudiobooks doubled over DVDs are still the most popular movie format with more than 665,000 checked out in 2011, but Blu-ray checkouts are growing at a faster rate.

4 Donations, endowments, and grants made several new projects possible in 2011, including Phase 2 of the Children s Room Makeover and a mini makeover of the Teen Zone. Colorful panels adorn the ends of each row of shelving, new paint freshens the walls and pictorial signage makes finding what children are looking for even simpler. In addition, donations and a $7500 grant from the Friends of the Washington-Centerville Public Library helped fund four new Early Literacy Stations loaded with educational games for children, ereaders, and tablets; and data projectors used for training the public and staff. AND SHARING RESOURCES FOR SUCCESS PROJECTS IN CREATIVE WAYS Thanks to a generous grant from the Yeck Family Foundation, the first Nature Literature Trail called Owlexander s Hoot Route debuted in April This unique partnership between the Library and the Centerville-Washington Park District resulted in a trail adorned with colorful signs that promote literacy and educate children about animals native to Grant Park. The Friends of Washington-Centerville Public Library collaborated with the Library to sell discarded books, movies, and music. The book sale and membership drive raised more than $9000 and netted 200 new Friends members. Not only does the book sale raise money and awareness for the Friends Group, but it also provides a great hands-on volunteer opportunity for interested citizens. By partnering with Better World Books, a non-profit organization that takes discarded library books and sells them online, the Library has found a way to profitably dispose of old and outdated materials. Fifteen percent of online sales is rebated back to the Using $30,000 in grant money from the American Library Association and FINRA, the Library built its book collection and presented over a dozen free financial education courses as part of the 2011 MoneySense series. Collaborative programming helps the Library offer more programs at an affordable price. Almost 1,000 programs were offered in 2011 and many were held in partnership with other organizations. 5 AHEAD These new services will debut in 2012! Brary Bags Themed bags with children s books, early literacy tips and more. Uncorked Book Discussion Group This new evening book discussion, hosted at RumbleSeat Wine in Washington Township, is the perfect pairing of wine and books! Teen Website Summer Sundays Starting July 8th, the Centerville Library will be open from 1-5 PM on Sundays year round! Wetland Walk Coming this fall the second Nature Literature Trail. A fun and educational exploration of the watershed at Oak Creek South Park.
