1 Kenya and Olympism Our team was unique in that if was made up of the three major races of the world. We were able to show the rest of the world that different races can combine for a common purpose. The KOA was formed on 14th February 1955 under the presidency of His Excellency Sir Evelyn Baring, Governor of Kenya. Mr. Reginald S. Alexander *, member of the legislative council, was elected the Association s first chairman. On 17th June of that year, official recognition was granted by the International Olympic Committee. As a result of generous financial support within Kenya, the KOA was able to send a team of 25, composed of the three main races of the world, to the Games of the XVlth Olympiad in Melbourne. Following Kenya s first participation, the NOC submitted a series of applications to stage an IOC Session. Interest has continued to grow in the movement and the number of Kenyan athletes taking part in the Games is ever-increasing. 726

3 KENYA AND THE OLYMPIC GAMES Date of first participation : Kenya s first venture into the Olympic arena was a highly memorable one as the multi-racial team earned high praise for its sportsmanlike attitude and its warm demeanour. Since then, Kenya has been represented at each Olympic Games, with the exception of the Olympiads of 1976 in Montreal and 1980 in Moscow. So far, no athlete has taken part in a Winter Games. Also worthy of mention are the spirited performances of Wilson Kiprugut, whose third-place finish in the 800 m. event at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo earned Kenya its first Olympic medal. Four years later in Mexico City, he laid claim to a silver medal in the same event. We might also mention the 4th place obtained in 1964 by the national hockey team. 7 PRESENT ORGANISATION OF THE KOA The present statutes were adopted on 27th May Composition The Kenya Olympic Association s membership includes the patron of the Association, a maximum of one representative nominated by each of the affiliated bodies, one representative of the Association s honorary members and one representative of its life members. A general meeting, at which reports are read and the accounts approved, is to be held at least once per calendar year. The Association s officers, the chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer and assistant treasurer, are to be elected from among the membership and hold office for four years. Financing of the KOA The Society of Kenyan Sportsmen is the main contributor of funds and organises numerous campaigns to raise money for the Association. THE KOA AND OLYMPISM Olympic awards obtained Olympic Order bronze medal by John Kasyoka * for his dedication to the Olympic cause and to African sport, both as an athlete and as a sports administrator and President of his NOC. Count Alberto Bonacossa Trophy by the Kenya Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association for its remarkable work in promoting the Olympic movement. Olympic day The KOA does not at present celebrate an Olympic day, but the idea is under study. Protection of the Olympics emblems Such protection is ensured. International Olympic Academy The first Kenyan representatives to attend the annual Sessions in Olympia were Messrs. Edward Ajanga and Alexis Okellos Othellos in Since that time, Kenya has sent delegates to most of the IOA s Sessions. 732

Other sports governing bodies The Kenya National Sports Council, advisory body to the Kenyan Government, provides small grants to sport federations. State aid for the sports movement There is no special assistance to athletes or sport except financial aid to some federations. Sport at school One period of 30 to 40 minutes per day at Junior and senior level. Sports installations One or two sports grounds in each town. Other installations (swimming pools for example) belong to private clubs. Sports which draw the biggest crowds Football. Sports experiencing the greatest development Football. Other professional duties have included chairmanship of the Kenya Oil Company and a term of office es Mayor of Nairobi from 1954 to 1955 Mr. Alexander has taken an active part in the work of the IOC Commissions, serving on the Olympic Aid Commission ( including a term es Chairman from 1966 to 1967), the Commission of Enquiry for the Winter Games ( ), the Commission of Enquiry for South Africa ( ). the France Commission ( ). the Joint Commission I ( ) and the Emblems Commission ( ). A founding member of the KOA, he held the position of Chairman from the Association s inception in 1954 until In the realm of sport his talents were diverse wth his primary interests lying in athletics. football, hockey, rugby, tennis and golf Samuel Mbogo Wa Kamau President of the KOA since Mr. Kamau, a former member of the country s police force, is now a business executive. Mr. Kamau, born in 1940, has a particular interest in hockey and serves on the executive of the Kenyan hockey federation A member of the Kenya Sports Council, his other activities include squash and badminton John Kasyoka Former president of the KOA ( ). Born in 1911, John Kasyoka is a pharmacist. He was an active sports enthusiast in his youth and become an administrator in He has played tennis, football, table tennis, badminton and golf and was a good boxer, athlete and cricketer. In his time. John Kasyaka held the Kenya 800 metres record for two years and was a team captain in many sports He was chairman of the Kenya Football Association for eight years and is currently chairman of the table tennis federation A member of the executive of the Supreme Council for Sport by virtue of his chairmanship of Zone VI He has also been an head of the Kenya Film Censorship Board for many years Mr. Charles Mukora, member of the IAAF Council. 733
