4 COMPETITION RULES OF AESTHETIC GROUP GYMNASTICS FOR CHILDREN The International Federation of Aesthetic Group Gymnastics IFAGG owns these rules and has a copy right of these rules. These rules are used in all international aesthetic group gymnastics competitions in children categories. 1. GENERALITIES These rules are followed in Aesthetic Group Gymnastics Competitions for children (age categories years and years), organized by the International Federation of Aesthetic Group Gymnastics and its members Competition categories years: gymnasts aged 10, 11 and 12 during the competition year compete in this category. Two members of the group may be one year younger or one year older than the given minimum and maximum ages years: gymnasts aged 12, 13 and 14 during the competition year compete in this category. Two members of the group may be one year younger or one year older than the given minimum and maximum ages Competing groups A group consists of 6-14 gymnasts and a reserve gymnast belongs to the group. A gymnast can compete during one competition in only one group and in one competition category. The named gymnasts belong to the group. A group/team can have a name (E.g. a club name, group name) Competition programme The Length of the Competition Programme The permitted length of the competition programme is 2 min 2 min 30 sec. An over- or under run of 5 seconds is permitted. Timing will start from the beginning of the first movement after the group has taken the starting position on the competition carpet. Timing will stop as soon as all gymnasts are completely motionless. The group s entrance to the starting position may not be accompanied by music or any extra movements. The programme must start and end on the competition carpet Music The choice of the music is free. The music must be recorded on a CD. There must be only one piece of music on a CD. The club, name, competition category and country of the group as well as the length of the music must be clearly marked in English on the CD. 4

5 1.4. Dress of gymnasts The competition dress of a group must be a leotard with aesthetic appeal appreciating the spirit of competitive sport. Leotards must be identical (material and style) and the same colour for the gymnasts of the group. However, if the leotard is made of a patterned material, some slight differences due to the cut may be tolerated. In case that the team consist also mail gymnast, the costume of mail gymnast must be as identical as possible that the female dresses. However, some slight differences may be tolerated such as female gymnasts have a skirt and mail has leotards. The dress may not prevent seeing the movements clearly. A correct gymnastics leotard must be in a non-transparent material. The arms, back and chest (décolleté) can be transparent. The neckline of the dress may not be too low on the chest or back. The cut of the dress at the top of the legs must not go beyond the top of the crotch in front (maximum) or beyond glutei in back. A short skirt is permitted (covering the hips but not covering the legs). The suit/skirt may have small decorations (such as ribbons, rhinestones, rosettes), however, they may not prevent the movements from being seen clearly. Small hair decorations and make up is a part of the competition dress and must be characteristic for the age group. Separate decorations in wrists, ankles or neck are not allowed. Gymnastics toe shoes and tights are permitted Competition area The size of the competition area is 13 m x 13 m including the borderline. The borderline must be marked clearly and be at least 10 cm wide. Outside the borderline there must be at least 2 m of free space. 5

6 2. TECHNICAL VALUE International Federation of Aesthetic Group Gymnastics IFAGG 2.1. Competition category years: required technical elements The composition of the programme must form a totality that allows and supports the gymnasts abilities to learn the basic techniques of Aesthetic Group Gymnastics. The technical elements chosen in the composition must correspond to the level of skills and age of the gymnasts. The competition programme must be varied containing the following movement groups and different combinations. Combining the movements with other movement groups or forming a series of them adds to the value of the composition Body movements Body movements must be characteristic for the age category and correspond to the gymnasts level of skills. The composition must contain at least 1 of each following body movements: - total body wave - total body swing - bending - release - lean or lunge - body turn (torsion) And: - 2 series including any two different body movements (series of two body movements = body movements A-series). - 1 series including any three different body movements (body movements B-series). The single body movements listed above may be included in the series. In addition, the body movement series may consist of other body movements which develop coordination, body control and agility of the gymnasts. - rolls - supported leans - shoulder stand Balances Balances must be characteristic for the age category and correspond to the gymnasts level of skills. The composition must contain at least 1 balance and 1 balance series of 2 different balances. In the series, changing of the support leg in between the two balances is allowed. - different balances on one supporting leg - turns on one supporting leg Jumps and Leaps Jumps and leaps must be characteristic for the age category and correspond to the gymnasts level of skills. The composition must contain at least 1 jump or leap and 1 jump series of 2 different jumps or leaps. Between 2 jumps or leaps in same series is allowed maximum 3 supports on the floor. 6

The arm movement series must contain at least 3 different arm movements. - waves - circles - sways - claps - pushes - lifts - figure eights - pulls - Body turn (torsion) - extensions - swings and leads with variations in the use of strength Series of Steps, Skips and Hops The composition must contain at least 2 different series of steps, skips or hops. A series contains at least 6 steps, skips or hops that are of at least 2 different types. In addition: 1 series (at least 6 steps, skips or hops) combined with another movement group (steps, skips and hops performed at the same time with arm or body movements). One of the series must contain a change in the rhythm. - variations of walking and running - variations of different dance steps (e.g. waltz, polka etc.) - variations of folk dance skips and hops Acrobatic Movements The composition must contain at least 2 acrobatic movements which are adapted to Aesthetic Group Gymnastics. Acrobatic movements must be fluent and naturally attached in the composition. - cartwheel - chest stand - bridge Flexibility Movements The composition must contain at least 4 flexibility movements showing the gymnasts' flexibility in the legs in the front line, back line and side line. In the front line, the flexibility must be shown for both the left and right side. The amplitude must be 180. The flexibility movements must show a clean line, amplitude and good control. The movements must be performed with good technical quality and respect the health aspects as well as display a good balance of flexibility and strength. The shape of the movement must be clearly visible. 7

8 Front line: Side line: Back line: - split on the floor - balance, front split with the free leg held with/without hands, amplitude is split leap, amplitude is side split on the floor - balance, side split with the free leg held with/without hands, amplitude is side split leap, amplitude is movements with the body bending backwards at a minimum 80. In the body bending, the shoulders must stay on the same level/line and the bending must be shown evenly throughout the whole back Series Combined of different Movement Groups The composition must contain at least 2 different series combined of two different movement groups (body movement series, jumps and balances). In a series, one step in between the movement groups is allowed. Examples of a combination: - Jump/leap + balance - Balance + jump/leap - Jump/leap + body movement series - Body movement series + jump/leap - Balance + body movement series - Body movement series + balance A body movement series can contain two body movements (A-series) or three body movements (B-series). The combinations of different movement groups have to be different. The composition must contain at least 2 different jumps or leaps and 1 jump series of two different jumps or leaps. Acrobatic movements must be fluent and naturally attached in the composition. - cart wheel - chest stand - bridge Flexibility Movements The composition must contain at least 3 flexibility movements showing the gymnasts' flexibility in legs in the front and back line. In the front line, the flexibility must be shown for both the left and right side. The amplitude must be 180. The flexibility movements must show a clean line, amplitude and good control. 12 Notice! An element which is repeated identically during the programme is counted only once in the technical value. A required element will be counted in the technical value if the execution shows the movement clearly with the key points performed and with correct technique. 2/3 of the group must perform the required element acceptably in order to have it counted in the technical value. A movement can be counted only as one required element at a time. 14 3. ARTISTIC VALUE International Federation of Aesthetic Group Gymnastics IFAGG 3.1. Required artistic elements of the composition Gymnasts quality in the composition The composition must form a totality in the balance with the qualities of the gymnasts. The composition must consist of versatile movements and a variety of movement groups, combinations and series which correspond to the gymnasts level of skills. All members of the group must perform the required elements at the same time or very shortly after each other. The required elements are divided in six groups: body movements, balances, jumps and leaps, series of skips, steps and hops, acrobatic movements, flexibility movements and series combined of different movement groups. The composition must be performed by using the total body movement technique that follows Aesthetic Group Gymnastics philosophy, where elements and combinations flow naturally, showing continuity and fluency. The composition must show the movements and elements without appearing as separate parts. The composition must show the gymnasts bilateral muscle control and flexibility. Additionally, the composition must support the development of the gymnasts strength, speed and endurance. For bilateral work, it is necessary that the team shows one jump/leap and one balance with the right leg and one jump/leap and one balance with the left leg. Unity (performing together as a team) of the group must be predominant. Different kinds of solos or canons can give nuances for the composition, but they must not be overbearing Structure of the composition The composition must form a total unity: unity between the gymnasts and unity between the versatile movements and a variety of movement groups, combinations and movement series. The structure of the composition must be versatile and have variety. The required elements must be placed in the program naturally and with diversity according to the structure of the program. The required elements must be versatile with a minimum of 3 different kinds of balances (E.g. 1 leg at the front, 1 pivot, 1 leg at the back), a minimum of 3 different jumps and leaps (E.g. 1 turning, 1 with bending, 1 jump with two legs) and a variety in body movements (E.g. combined with another movement group, on the floor etc.). The composition must show bilateral both sided movements (both legs, bending to both sides, etc.) and variety in the use of elements. The composition must include 6 different formations and the movements must be performed in different planes and levels (E.g. low level: on the floor, medium and high level: jumps and leaps) and in several directions (E.g. forward, backward, lateral, oblique). There must be a variety in the use of space. Changes from one movement or formation to another must be fluent and varied. The use of the competition area must be sufficient. The composition must include variations of tempo (fast and slow movements) and variations in the use of power (strong and light movements). 14

15 Originality and music International Federation of Aesthetic Group Gymnastics IFAGG The composition must show originality as well as expressiveness and aesthetic appeal in the movements and be in balance with the age category s characteristic way of moving. An original composition includes new elements and formations or new ways to attain these formations, as well as original and interesting collaborations. The movements of the gymnasts must form a unity with the music and the movements and the composition must follow the structure of the music. The music must correspond to the idea and expressiveness of the composition. The music must be rhythmically varied and suitable for the age category Deductions in artistic value Music The music must form a unity. If the music is composed of different musical pieces, the different themes and modes must be linked together and their coexistence must have maximum unity possible. Monotonous background music is not allowed. A stop in the music or the poor linking between two musical themes is not authorised. The quality of the music dubbing must be appropriate. Music cannot end before the gymnasts. The music must not end by breaking off abruptly Error in composition An error in the composition is any part of the programme that disturbingly breaks the unity of the composition. These kinds of errors could be, for example, a pause that is to long between movements or combinations (E.g. waits, static parts of the composition), poor or illogical moving from one formation to another ( E.g. ordinary running, a situation where one gymnast is using a different leg than the others during the same movement), the bilateral requirements for the entire team is not fulfilled (not using the non-dominant leg for jumps/leaps and balances), poorly connected pre-acrobatic movements and collaborations (that are not unified and fluently part of the composition or poorly performed ), anaesthetic movements etc Penalties in artistic value Forbidden movements The composition may not contain acrobatic movements with air time or lifting a gymnast (having the body weight of a gymnast completely supported by the other gymnasts or losing contact to the floor supported by the other gymnasts). Exception in years: One (1) lift without losing contact is allowed during the routine. The lifted gymnast has to be active (has to help with her own power and the other gymnasts lift her). In any case, the gymnast can t step on another gymnast on any part of the body, and the lifted gymnast is not allowed to lose contact with the gymnast/gymnasts Bonus Points Bonus points can be awarded if the composition has a thematic story and has been performed with great artistic expression. The impression could come from the single impressive part of the composition or the unforgettable totality of the composition. 15

18 4. EXECUTION 4.1. Requirements of Execution Body Movements Aesthetic group gymnastics is composed of stylized and natural total body movements where the hips form the basic movement centre. The movement flows outwards from the centre (the hips) or inwards, towards the centre. A movement performed with one part of the body reflects throughout the entire body. The philosophy of the sport is founded on harmonious, rhythmic and dynamic movements performed with the natural use of strength. All body movements must be performed fluently and underline continuity. The execution must show amplitude, variety in the dynamics and speed. Key points: Bending: - shape is clear and well controlled - good amplitude of the movement Total body swing: - starts with stretching - relaxing neck and arms during the swing - ends into a well controlled position Release: - starts from a well controlled position - in the release, phase hips turn forward, the back rounds, the neck contracts a bit and the shoulders are relaxed Lean/lunge: - shape and line of the movement is clear - good muscle control and posture in the body Total Body Wave: - starts from the hips - turning direction of hips clearly visible - movement flows through the whole body and reflects to all body parts - movement ends into a well controlled and balanced position Body turn (torsion): - shape and direction are clearly visible - good amplitude; there s a difference in the shoulders and hips, the direction must be 90 Contraction: - active contraction of muscles is clearly visible - hips turn towards the contraction's direction 18

19 Balances All movements or movement series performed staying on one small point of the support or holding a position still on one small point of the support are counted as balances. The size of the point of support, centre of gravity of the body and the body position affect the difficulty of a balance. The duration of the use of the point of support must be clearly visible in the balance movements. Balances must have the following characteristics: - shape fixed and well-defined during the balance - good amplitude in the shape - good control of the body during and after the balance Jumps and Leaps A jump or leap is a total movement with a take-off, flight and landing. The take-off starts with a plié, after which the foot, ankle and knee of the take-off foot are extended very quickly. The flight must have good height and elevation. The shape of the jump or leap must be clearly visible during the flight. The shape must stay fixed during the rotation of the turning jumps and leaps. The landing must be light and soft with good control throughout the whole body. Jumps and leaps must have the following characteristics: - good height and elevation during the flight - good control in the body during the flight - good amplitude in the shape/position - good control in the landing Arm Movements The execution of the arm movements must clearly show different planes and directions and a variety of relaxation and strength. Arm movements must be performed using the whole length of the arm Leg Movements Leg movements must be performed with good technique, which includes good extensions, a rotation outwards, good flexibility and the appropriate position of the hips in lifts and holdings Series of Steps, Skips and Hops The series of steps, skips and hops must develop the gymnasts agility. The execution of steps skips and hops must show good technique and coordination and they must be performed rhythmically Acrobatic Movements In acrobatic movements, the gymnasts must show good muscle control, coordination and agility Flexibility Movements Flexibility movements must be performed with good muscle control and show a clear line and shape of the movement. The movements must be performed with good technique and respect the healthy aspects. Good balance of flexibility and strength must be shown. 19

20 Other requirements of Execution International Federation of Aesthetic Group Gymnastics IFAGG 1 The execution must be unified and synchronized. 2 All team members must perform the required elements either simultaneously, successively (canon) or within a short period of time. 3 All movements, movement series and combinations must be total body movements and changes from one movement or formation to another must be fluent. In total body movements, the leading movement is reflected in every part of the body when the movement flows from the centre of the body, or backwards through the hips. The movements are tied together in a way that the flow continues from one movement to another underlining the continuity. 4 The execution must show good technique, good extensions, accuracy of movements and preciseness of formations and transitions. The execution must show the difference between light and strong movements (variation in the use of strength) underlining the movements that are characteristic to the age category. The use of strength must be natural. 5 The execution must show good posture, coordination, balance, stability and rhythm. 6 The execution must show the group s athletic skills: flexibility, strength, speed and endurance. 7 The execution must show expressiveness and aesthetic appeal. 8 The gymnasts must perform the execution according to the dynamics and rhythm of the music. 9 The starting and ending position are part of the execution. 10 All elements must be executed with a consideration of healthy aspects: the shoulders and hips being in line, the supporting leg, the shape position and bilateral work: a minimum of one (1) balance and one (1) jump/leap with the non-dominant leg for the entire team Evaluation of Execution (EXE) The maximum score of the execution is 10.0 (0 9.8 and bonus points ) Different parts of execution: Fault in execution with 1-2 gymnasts, deduction 0.1 each time. 22 5. JUDGING 5.1. General The choreographer or coach of a participating team cannot be a judge in the Competition Category where the team competes in EVALUATION PANELS Evaluating Judges The groups will be evaluated by two panels of judges: one for composition and one for execution. The Composition Panel is divided in two subgroups: - Composition, Technical Value TV, consists of 3 4 judges - Composition, Artistic Value AV, consists of 3 4 judges - In both subgroups, one of the judges (no. 1) will be the head judge of the panel concerned. Execution (Exe) Panel - Consists of 3 4 judges. One of the judges (no. 1) will be the head judge of the panel concerned Superior Panel or Official Observer Superior Panel or Official Observer with specially defined responsibilities can be named for the competition Line Judges There must be at least 2 line judges who are observing the lines in the corners of the competition area. They will signal each passing of the borderline of the competition area with a flag and record each of them on a slip of paper provided. At the end of the exercise, the line judge sends the slip of paper to the head judge of the Execution Panel who approves the deduction. A deduction will be taken from the average score of execution Responsibilities of the Evaluating Judges - The judges evaluate the exercises according to the rules and guidelines agreed in the judges' technical meeting. - The judges must give their score independently - During the competition, the judges may not discuss the evaluation with each other, coaches or gymnasts. - Each panel of judges works independently and gives the points regardless of the other panels' points Responsibilities of the Head Judges - is one of the evaluating judges - checks the differences between the scores of all evaluating judges in the panel concerned - calls the judges together in situations described in the rules and leads the negotiation (after the first competing group s exercise and if differences in points are too high) - supervises that the rules are followed - supervises the work of the evaluating judges in the panel concerned - may abrupt the execution due to a technical problem or dangerous situation - if issues that are not described in the rules occur during the competition, the head judge calls the whole panel of judges together (Composition and Execution) as well as the competition director and possible official observer or superior panel for negotiation - checks the minutes of the competition and signs them 22

23 6. SCORING THE POINTS International Federation of Aesthetic Group Gymnastics IFAGG 6.1. General Panel TV, Composition/Technical Value evaluates the technical elements of the composition, counts the value and adds the possible bonus points. Panel AV, Composition/Artistic Value evaluates the artistic value of the composition and counts together the successes of the composition according to the values described in the rules and adds the possible bonus points. Panel Exe, Execution evaluates the execution of the group by making the deductions according to the values described in the rules and adding the possible bonus points. Preliminaries Composition Panels TV and AV and Execution Panel Exe give their own scores separately and the average scores will be counted from each of them. The average scores of each panel will be counted together. Finals Scoring the points will be done the same way as in the preliminary round. The score from preliminaries will be counted together with the score from finals in order to get the final results and ranking Scoring the points, composition Panels Composition/Technical Value (TV) The panel Composition/Technical Value (TV) will give their points Depending on the number of judges in the panel, the scores will be counted as follows: Panel of 4 judges: - The highest and the lowest scores will be eliminated and the average of the two middle scores is the partial score - The difference between the middle scores taken into account may not be greater than 0.3 (in between ) Panel of 3 judges: - Average of all scores will be counted and the result is the partial score - Difference of all scores may not be greater than 0.4 (in between of ) Bonus points: - Bonus points can be a maximum of Bonus points will be added to the average score of TV - Bonus points are given if 3/4, 2/3 or judges have suggested the bonus Composition/Artistic Value (AV) The panel Composition/ Artistic Value (AV) will give their points Depending on the number of judges in the panel, the scores will be counted as follows: 23

24 Panel of 4 judges: - The highest and the lowest scores will be eliminated and the average of the two middle scores is the partial score The difference between the middle scores taken into account may not be greater than 0.3 (in between of 0 3.9) Panel of 3 judges: - Average of all scores will be counted and the result is the partial score - Difference of all scores may not be greater than 0.4 (in between of 0 3.9) Penalties: Forbidden movement: -0.5 points each time. Penalties are given separately and added to the average AV score only if the majorities (3/4 or 2/3) of the judges have made the deduction. Bonus points: - Bonus points can be a maximum of Bonus points will be added to the average score of AV - Bonus points are given, if 3/4 or 2/3 of the judges has suggested the bonus Scoring the points, Execution Panel The panel Execution (Exe) will give their points Panel of 4 judges: - The lowest and the highest points will be eliminated and the average of the two middle points will be counted - Difference between the two middle points can be a maximum of 0.3 (in between of 0 9.8) Panel of 3 judges: - Average of all scores will be counted - The difference of all scores may not be greater than 0.4 (in between of 0 9.8) Bonus points: - Bonus points can be a maximum of Bonus points will be added to the average score of Exe - Bonus points are given if 3/4 or 2/3 of judges has suggested the same bonus Head Judges responsibilities in scoring the points All judges send their points to the head judge. The head judge checks whether the difference between two middle scores/all partial scores given by the judges conforms to the rules. If the difference is too big, the head judge calls the judges to negotiation. The head judge records possible bonus points and penalties deducted. Negotiations: The head judge is the chairperson in the negotiation. The head judge has a right to take all judges scores into the negotiation. The order between the judges scores cannot change in the negotiation. 24

The first performing group in a competition category After the first performing group in the competition category, the judges always meet to negotiate within their own panel and check the differences in the scores together. Judges give the scores before the negotiation. In the negotiation, all judges can change the scores but the order between the scores cannot be changed Penalties deducted by Head Judges The penalties are deducted from the average scores of artistic value or execution and recorded in the minutes of the competition Penalties Deducted by Head Judge of Artistic Value - Time The length of the exercise is over more or less than 5 seconds of the given time limit. Deduction: 0.1 points. - Dress Unaesthetic dress or a dress not conforming to the regulations: deduction 0.1 for one gymnast and 0.2 for two or more gymnasts. Hair decorations, make-up and toe shoes are a part of the dress. Deduction: 0.1 points for each loose item (hair decoration, slipper etc.) Penalties Deducted by the Head Judge of Execution - Passing the borderline of the competition area Each passing of each gymnast (touching the floor outside the borderline): deduction 0.1 points each time. The line judges will send a note for the head judge of every boundary mistake. - Missing Gymnast Deduction for each missing gymnast: 0.5. The deduction will also be taken if the group begins the exercise with 6 or more gymnasts and in the middle of the exercise a gymnast drops out for any reason. The Technical Committee of IFAGG is responsible for changing the rules. The Board of IFAGG has approved these rules XXXXXXXX. These rules are valid until 31 st of August
