BIOLOGY TRENT UNIVERSITY BIOL 1050H-A Human Anatomy (Face to Face version) 2014 Fall Peterborough Instructor: Cynthia Kapke Campus: Peterborough (preferred) Office Location: LHS (DNA) B Telephone: ext 6610 Office Hours: Fridays from 9:30 11:30, or by appointment Secretary: Sandra Sisson ssisson@trentu.ca Office Location: LHS D102 Telephone: ext 7424 Laboratory Coordinator: Debbie Lietz dlietz@trentu.ca Office Location: LHS D216 Telephone: extension 7486 Course Summary: This course is designed to provide the student with a basic understanding of the structure of the human body using a system approach. The human body will be examined on both a microscopic and macroscopic level in order to gain an appreciation of its complexity. Interactive lab sessions, examining slide specimens of tissues, models of organs and other body parts as well as displays and posters will help students consolidate information learned throughout the lecture series. Throughout the course, a special emphasis will be placed on applications to nursing and forensic sciences. Course pre-requisites: 4U Biology and Chemistry are required; 4U Kinesiology recommended. Excludes Biol 105 Course Pre-requisites: 4U Biology and Chemistry are pre-requisites for the course. Biol 1050 (Human Anatomy) is open to all students who meet the above prerequisites.

Learning Outcomes: I have developed the course to address several learning outcomes. By the end of the course a successful student should: 1. Understand the basic anatomy of the human body. 2. Understand how anatomical structures interact in the human body. 3. Be aware of the limits of knowledge in anatomy. 4. Be able to identify anatomical structures visually and descriptively. 5. Develop a mastery of the material such that students can communicate with their peers in an effective and professional manner. Course Times and Locations Lecture: Fridays 12:00 1:50 pm, in W101.2 Labs: Tuesdays 9:00 11:50, 1:00 3:50, 5:00 7:50 DNA 103 and 105. Students attend their lab every other week. Assessment Task Comment Value Labs Laboratory attendance and participation, and lab manual completion (5% each lab) 25% Online lab quiz Best 3 of 4 quizzes counted for grade (3.33 % each) 10% Midterm Covers material in lab and lecture up to exam date 20% Lab practical exam In last lab period of year, cumulative identification 10% Final Exam Cumulative, written in person 35% Please note that at least 25% of the student s grade will be available on or before the last day to withdraw from this course, Nov Contacting your instructor: responses will normally be provided within 24 hours during the work-week (Monday Friday). Please include your course number (1050A) in the subject of your and use your Trent account to ensure that you message is not spam-filtered accidentally. You are encouraged to use class discussion boards for your general questions. Phone messages will not be returned. 2

Course materials: Required: 1. Course textbook: textbook Human Anatomy & Physiology, The Unity of Form and Function 7 th Ed: K.S. Saladin, ISBN or MHID Lab manual: Selected Chapters from Laboratory Manual for Anatomy & Physiology 7 th Ed: Eric Wise, ISBN or MHIK Please note, the 6 th edition of the textbook will work fine for this course but you may be unable to access the McGraw Hill Connect program if you did not buy the textbook with the access code. The budget conscious student can save money by buying direct access to the McGraw Hill course which includes the electronic version of the textbook for close to half the price of purchasing the hard copy textbook. Also, the labs we will be using in this course can be purchased directly from McGraw Hill create as a pdf. The cost is less than half the cost of the lab manual, but you will need to print the labs before coming to class. Recommended: 1. Access to Connect Plus computer site from McGraw-Hill. Connect Plus is available through an access code that comes with new textbooks from the Trent University or as a separate access card, or through direct purchase from McGraw-Hill. Connect Plus includes access to the electronic version of the textbook as well as many other learning aids like an interactive anatomical program using images from a real cadaver. You do not need a hardbound copy of the textbook if you are comfortable using the electronic version of the textbook available on Connect Plus. Connect Plus including the textbook is available as a free trial for about 2 weeks if you want to look it over before purchase. 2. An anatomical atlas, especially if you are not using Connect Plus and the Anatomy and Physiology Reveled program. Blackboard Learning System: Blackboard Learning System will be the electronic center for the course. The syllabus, lecture slides, recorded lecture webcasts, and all announcements will be posted there. All quizzes will be posted on blackboard learning system under assessments. There will also be information on textbook purchases, and university policies. Additionally, I will be posting study guides that were prepared for the web version of this course on blackboard under optional materials. Lab: This is an actual participation mark, not simply an attendance mark. Each lab is worth 5% of your grade. The grade breakdown is as follows: 2% attendance 2% lab completion 1% lab question score 3

Labs books will be checked for completion at the end of the lab period and some select questions will be graded for accuracy. You may be asked to turn in your labs at the end of the lab period. It is recommended that students prepare for each lab by reading over the lab materials before class. Expect to use the entire lab period. Online Lab Quizzes: Each student will attend lab during one of a two week rotations. Material from the student s lab will be tested with an online quiz that will be available from 12:01 AM until 11:59 PM on the Tuesday following the student s lab (one week after the lab session). The quiz will be available under assessments on the course blackboard learning system. The student will have 15 minutes to complete 10 questions including anatomical identifications from the prior week s lab material. There will be total of 4 quizzes and only the student s best three scores will be counted toward the final grade. There will be no makeup quizzes. Missed quizzes will receive a score of zero. If two or more quizzes are missed with documentation, the missing quiz grade allocation will be added to the final exam. Midterm: The Midterm exam will be in multiple choice format and will cover material as presented in the course schedule. Final Exam: The final exam will be cumulative and will cover material from the entire course. The material from the last few weeks will be slightly overrepresented on the final exam because that material will have not been tested previously in the course. Lab Practical exam: There will be a laboratory practical exam on the last lab day. This exam will cover material from lab and be set up as a bell ringer test. There will be up to 50 question stations including up to 2 questions each with students spending 1 minute at each question station. This exam will largely be identification. 4

Policy on Quizzes, Exams and Assignments: Final Exams: Students should not make any commitments (e.g. vacation, job-related activities, or other travel plans) during the final examination period. Students are required to be available for all examinations during the periods for which they are scheduled (as published in the course syllabus or university time table). Deferral of Final Examinations: Extension of due dates for completion of final examinations may be granted to students on the basis of illness, accident or other extreme and unanticipated legitimate circumstances beyond the student s control, with supporting documentation. Supporting Documentation: Supporting documentation will be required and must be submitted before deferrals are approved. For illness or accident, supporting documentation will take the form of: 1. The Trent University Medical Certificate from Health Services 2. A certificate or letter from the attending physician clearly indicating the start and end dates of the illness and the student s inability to write an examination, complete an assignment, or participate in group activities or, 3. For other circumstances, students should consult the instructor about acceptable forms of documentation. Please see the following link for information on Trent s medical certificate policy: ( ) Independent work: Academic dishonesty is taken very seriously at Trent University. All work submitted for this class must be your own. I have provided you with a folder on the blackboard learning system entitled Academic dishonesty. In it you will find documentation describing plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty as well as the penalties at Trent for committing academic dishonesty. You will be required to complete the quiz on Academic Integrity before you will be allowed to submit any assignments so be sure to get this done early in the course. The Academic Integrity Course module will be located under your course list on blackboard learning system. Penalties: Labs are to be completed by the end of lab time. There will be no make-up labs, quizzes, or exams. Missed labs, quizzes, or exams will receive a grade of zero unless prior arrangements have been made or emergency situations have precluded the ability to make prior arrangements. Special Circumstances If there are cases of exceptional circumstances surrounding a student s inability to complete allocated course work, these should be brought to the attention of the instructor, with the appropriate supporting documents, as soon as possible. Extensions arranged after an assignment is due will normally not be granted. Each situation with regard to extensions or potential penalties will be judged on a case-bycase basis. 5

University Policies Academic Integrity: Breaches of Academic Integrity, which include plagiarism and cheating, are extremely serious academic offences and carry penalties varying from a 0 grade on an assignment to expulsion from the University. Definitions, penalties, and procedures for dealing with plagiarism and cheating are set out in Trent University s Academic Integrity Policy. You have a responsibility to educate yourself unfamiliarity with the policy is not an excuse. You are strongly encouraged to visit Trent s Academic Integrity website to learn more: Access to Instruction: It is Trent University's intent to create an inclusive learning environment. If a student has a disability and/or health consideration and feels that he/she may need accommodations to succeed in this course, the student should contact the Student Accessibility Service (SAS) (BH Suite 132, accessibilityservices@trentu.ca). For Trent University in Oshawa Student Accessibility Service office contact Complete text can be found under Access to Instruction in the Academic Calendar. Please see the Trent University academic calendar for University Diary dates, Academic Information and Regulations, and University and departmental degree requirements. 6
