3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? is an innovative school of choice located on the campus of Gaston College in Dallas, NC. Our school is made up of students from all nine high schools in Gaston County; therefore, we are a representation of Gaston County. Students are selected through an application process which includes an interview and a lottery. The Early College target population includes firstgeneration college students, underrepresented students in the college setting, students open to a strong academic support system, and students who would benefit from accelerated course work. Currently, our student body is 120 strong. Once the school reaches full capacity, we will house 250 students in grades students take high school courses and college courses concurrently. Students have the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and an Associate of Arts Degree or substantial college credit. Gaston County is a former textile community that has become primarily a bedroom community as it borders Mecklenburg County.Gaston County's population is 206,000. The county offers residents several opportunities such as, parks, libraries, and our own Museum of Art and History. Over the last three years, our school had a facility and name change as we transitioned from a high school campus at Bessemer City High School to the Gaston College campus. Originally our early college selected students from the Bessemer City High School feeder area. Once the school relocated to Gaston College, we began to accept students from across the county beginning with the freshman class of The staff is comprised primarily of high achieving teachers who have experienced success at other schools in relation to excellent End of Course test scores. Teachers are a blend of native North Carolinians and transplants from across the United States. This blend of teachers with various life experiences allows them to provide students with different and unique perspectives. Our school immerses students into a college going culture being on a community college campus. In addition, we travel to universities across North Carolina to tour and visit. Students are educated from the beginning on the college application and financial aid process. The expectation that students graduate with an AA degree and then transfer to a four year university is communicated from day one. The school is located in a state of the art facility with two computer labs and two science labs. The science labs are fully equipped by the college with everything needed to teach a college course. High school teachers and students have access to the science lab materials and supplies on a daily basis. Although GECHS does not offer band, chorus, or athletics, the school offers community service opportunities, extracurriculars in clubs and organizations, and numerous field trips. Page 2

Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. Purpose - will prepare students to learn for college and career, lead by example, and live a successful life in today's society. Direction - will provide students with dynamic learning experiences in a college setting, a staff who cares for and supports each student, rigorous academic expectations, and opportunities for personal and community growth. embodies our purpose through the emersion of students into college classes and college life as freshmen. Students begin high school enrolled in a college class. As freshmen, students take two college courses and progressively take more classes each year. During the 13th year, students take solely college courses. During the freshmen and sophomore years, college instructors teach the courses in the high school building. During the junior and senior years, students leave the high school building to take their college courses across the college campus. During the 13th year, students are allowed to move freely about the college campus as a regular college student. Our teachers and staff members build strong relationships with students. The small size of our school offers staff members the opportunity to know each student personally. Page 3

Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. Gaston Early College was recognized as a high school two years ago in 2010 under the name Bessemer City Early College. For two consecutive school years and , the Early College received the North Carolina School of Excellence Award with over 90% of our students achieving proficiency on End of Course Tests. Areas for improvement include adjusting to the transition from a high school campus to the college campus. We are trying to create a college going culture while providing students with a high school experience. Additionally, we plan to communicate very clearly to the 8th grade students and parents the philosophy and guiding principles of Gaston Early College High School. We also want to ensure that incoming students understand our expectations of excellence. Page 4
