1 Practice Building Information ling (BIM) Introduction Introduction Building Information ling is the process of generating and managing building data during its life cycle. BIM involves representing a design as a collection of objects generated using three-dimensional, real-time, dynamic building modelling software such as Revit, allowing extraction of different views from the building model for drawing production and other uses: 3D representations can be readily plotted. These different views are automatically consistent, since each object is defined only once in the model, eliminating error. The process produces the Building Information which encompasses building geometry, spatial relationships, and includes quantities / properties of building components. Objects can carry data attributes including size, specification, life cycle and cost allowing for interrogation, for example to provide reports and schedules. It eliminates construction uncertainty and allows for the development of the model through construction, providing an accurate representation of the completed building. BIM defines objects parametrically in relation to other objects, so that if a related object changes the model remains accurate. 3 Building Information ling (BIM) What We Are Doing Having previous experience of parametric design tools over a 10 year period Associated Architects has been well placed to deliver BIM benefits to its clients. As BIM process managers the company has experience of assisting clients in writing BIM specifications and protocol documents as well as leading design teams in large scale BIM projects as part of a lead consultant role. geometry and object parameters are defined by Associated Architects and exported to other consultants. Internal BIM managers control the model, merging information from other consultants and running regular clash detection checks in NavisWorks. This process continues through the various work stages, with the model increasing in accuracy as the design and coordination is developed. Clash resolved models are handed to the contractor at tender. This places responsibility for the coordination of the construction supply chain rightly with the contractor and allows the model to be used for procurement, programming and buildability. On a number of projects Associated Architects is contributing to development of advanced facility management BIM tools using products such as Autodesk s 360 cloud based system and ArtrA. These software tools are used to interrogate the model and its underlying data for facilities / asset management and O&M, compiled in a structured query language (SQL) database. Advanced BIM Delivery & Operation Tools - Veo Associated Architects Birmingham Institute of Art & Design BIM project is being used by the US developer of the Veo advanced BIM software as a test project ahead of its product launch. The software aims to be a powerful and intuitive facilities management platform. Industry & Contractor Working Groups Associated Architects also sits on a number of industry and contractor working groups advising on issues faced by BIM users in a number of areas including: software compatibility, collaborative issues and work flow issues.

5 Building Information ling (BIM) BIM Services We Offer BIM is an area of developing technology and as such we look to tailor are services to ensure maximum benefit for our clients. If you are unsure whether the process will work for your company we are. Pre-construction: BIM Manager role including; BIM implementation planning Set up procedure and protocol documents for the design team Provide all project standards and file structures for the design team Define all common content data definitions Incorporate client requirements within the BIM environment for facilities management and operation and maintenance deliverables Compile single disciplinary models (SDMs) into multi-disciplinary models (MDMs) Provide clash detection analysis and reporting at milestone points defined by the project BIM deployment plan Ensure all the required information parameters on the project are maintained and completed at the correct stages Ensure models are structured to allow maximum reuse of data outside the Revit platform, e.g. quantity take off or environmental analysis by IES Construction & Post-construction: BIM Manager role including; Compilation of novated consultant and subcontractor designed SDMs into a coordinated MDM, Provide clash detection analysis and reporting, Managing of handover of ownership of objects from consultant team to subcontractors, Supporting contractors in the creation of temporary works and site set up SDM, Assisting contractors in the creation of 4D MDM using Navisworks Timeline feature, Coordinate as-built MDM and O&M information and ensure all relevant parameters in model are correctly completed, Advise on formats and usability of BIM based facilities management tools, Consultant only BIM services providing as-built architectural SDMs. Supported Platforms: Revit Architecture 2013 architectural SDM production and visualisation Navisworks Manage 2013 MDM completion and clash detection
