1 Technical Data Sheet PARALOID B-66DMC, 44.5% Thermoplastic Acrylic Resin in Dimethyl Carbonate Description PARALOID B-66DMC Acrylic Resin is an excellent general purpose resin which can be used in a variety of applications such as general industrial finishes, plastic coatings, aerosols, inks and graphic arts, and as a sealer for concrete surfaces. Because dimethyl carbonate (DMC) has been classified as VOC-exempt by the EPA, PARALOID B-66DMC Acrylic Resin can be used in applications where reduced VOC is needed. Therefore, PARALOID B-66DMC would be an excellent choice for low VOC concrete sealers for California and other areas of the United States. Note: That DMC is considered VOC-exempt in most of the United States. Please check with your state and local agencies to ensure that DMC is recognized as VOC-exempt for your application and region. 2 Formulating Guidelines PARALOID B-66DMC Acrylic Resin should have similar solvent compatibility as PARALOID B-66 Solution Acrylic Resins in xylene and toluene, but actual viscosity values may vary. Dimethyl carbonate has a faster evaporation rate than toluene (3.3 for DMC versus 2. for toluene), so the solvent package for the formulation will need to be modified with a slower evaporating solvent in order to achieve the proper balance of viscosity and film drying rate. For example, since parachlorobenzotrifluoride (PCBTF) has an evaporation rate similar to xylene, it can be blended with DMC to slow down the drying rate of the formulation while maintaining reduced VOC. In addition, a small amount of acetone or t- butyl acetate can be included in the solvent package to lower viscosity, if needed. Note that t-butyl acetate and DMC are considered VOC-exempt in most of the United States. The regulatory status for DMC and t-butyl acetate in California is currently under consideration on a county by county and regional basis, and has been approved in many, but not all, areas. Please check with your state and local agencies to ensure that t-butyl acetate and DMC are recognized as VOC-exempt for your application and region. PARALOID B-66DMC Acrylic Resin exhibits ultra-low VOC as supplied in areas where DMC is VOC-exempt. DMC has a melting point of 2 to 4 C so that it will have a freezing point above that of water. As a result, formulations based on PARALOID B-66DMC Acrylic Resin should be tested for freeze / thaw stability. The resin by itself is freeze / thaw stable. Formulations using DMC will need to be modified with slower evaporating solvent to achieve an optimum balance of viscosity and film drying rate. Table 1 shows the relative evaporation rates of some common solvents which count towards the VOC of a formulation, along with the typical VOC-exempt solvents used in the coatings industry. The majority of VOC-exempt solvents are fast evaporating, with the exception of PCBTF (Table 1). However, PCBTF is a weak solvent and does not dissolve resins to similar low viscosities at the same solids that would be seen with the standard solvents (such as xylene). 3 As a result, the formulator will be constrained by the evaporation rate and the viscosity of the mixture in order to develop a practical formulation. Another approach is to include small amounts of propylene carbonate in the formulation to help slow down the overall evaporation rate of the formulation. Two things need to be considered when using propylene carbonate, which is also considered a VOC-exempt solvent. First is that PARALOID B-66 Acrylic Resin is not soluble in propylene carbonate as the main solvent, but propylene carbonate can be used as a small component of a solvent mixture. The second consideration is the extremely slow evaporation rate of propylene carbonate (<.5 versus 1. for n-butyl acetate). If one were to place a small drop of propylene carbonate on a metal panel, the droplet would still be present after eight hours. It is possible that as the other solvents in the mixture leave the film, the remaining propylene carbonate may migrate into the resin and could lead to some level of plasticization. Performance Data Applications Testing of Concrete Sealer Formulations With the above considerations in mind, we evaluated the starting point concrete sealer formulations shown in the Formulations section below, and compared them to a control system consisting of PARALOID B-66 Acrylic Resin dissolved in xylene. The clear sealer formulations for concrete based on PARALOID B-66DMC are offered as starting points for developing low or ultra-low VOC sealers. The formulator will need to test and possibly modify the formulation in order to achieve the best balance of properties. Table 2 indicates that the film hardness development is similar for the starting point formulations both with and without propylene carbonate (Formulations B66DMC-1, 2 and 3). Note that all three starting point formulations contain PCBTF in order to moderate the drying rate of the film. Moreover, the control formulation gives consistently harder films versus drying time, highlighting the faster release of xylene from the film. This suggests that the PCBTF may also be playing a major role in the film hardness development. However, it appears that as the films dry over time, the starting point formulations are becoming closer in film hardness compared to the control. Konig hardness measurements indicate that propylene carbonate does not contribute appreciably to softening the films, especially after one day of curing. Including propylene carbonate in the formulation improves the dry to touch time compared with Formulation B66DMC-1, which contains dimethyl carbonate, PCBTF and PM Acetate. The addition of propylene carbonate allows the film to have a similar dry to touch time as the control, PARALOID B-66 in xylene. However, the control formulation appears to remain in a wet or liquid state longer before the film starts to get tacky. This may provide more time for the film to penetrate and bond with the concrete substrate. The correct balance of VOCexempt solvents is needed so the film does not dry too quickly and has enough time to penetrate into the concrete substrate. Fast drying could result in excessive hold out, with too thick of a film on top of the substrate, which could then delaminate and crack over time. Full evaluation of formulations in their intended applications is recommended. The starting point concrete sealer formulations have excellent water whitening resistance relative to the control. Therefore, the presence of propylene carbonate and PCBTF did not hurt the water whitening resistance of the dry films. The dimensions of the drawdown area tested were 1 by 3 inches. 4) The dry to touch time is the time needed for a film to be dry so that when a gloved finger comes into contact with the film anywhere on the draw down, the film does not have any tackiness. 5) The water whitening test was conducted with films on black vinyl scrub charts. Films were dried for 5 days, then immersed in deionized water for 24 hours. 7 Handling Precautions Storage Disposal Considerations Before using this product, consult the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)/Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for details on product hazards, recommended handling precautions and product storage. Store products in tightly closed original containers at temperatures recommended on the product label. Dispose in accordance with all local, state (provincial) and federal regulations. Empty containers may contain hazardous residues. This material and its container must be disposed in a safe and legal manner. It is the user's responsibility to verify that treatment and disposal procedures comply with local, state (provincial) and federal regulations.
