DRI International: Recertification Policy and Procedures This policy details recertification requirements that apply to all individuals who hold professional certification from DRI International. Those individuals holding an Associate certification maintain their certification by paying DRI International s annual fee. There are no continuing education requirements for maintaining an Associate certification. Retired certified professionals maintain their certification with DRI International by paying the annual maintenance fee applicable to their status. There are no continuing education requirements for maintaining a certification for individuals in Retired status. The words Certified Professional refer to any individual who has obtained and continues to maintain a professional certification from DRI International. DRI refers to DRI International, or to any DRI International Affiliate, as appropriate. POLICY It is the policy of DRI International that Certified Professionals initially certified under DRI International s Certification Policy and Procedures shall demonstrate their continued professional qualifications and experience by recertifying on a two (2)-year cycle. The objective of this policy is to ensure the continued knowledge, competence, and capability of the professionals for whom the DRII provides certification. Recertification of a Certified Professional is the process of submitting credentials, for review and validation by the DRI International staff, that verify the continuing professional experience, training, performance, and leadership in the Business Continuity Profession by those who hold professional certification from DRI International. The individual professional s two (2)-year Recertification Cycle begins on January 1 st of the year following initial certification. Qualification for recertification by DRI International is based on the Continuing Education Activity Points (CEAPs) completed by a Certified Professional by December 31 st of the second year following the Initial Certification Year. Certified Professionals must obtain eighty (80) CEAPs during their two (2)-year Recertification Period. Certified Professionals will submit proof of their continuing education activities and performance achievements in the business continuity profession in accordance with the DRI International s Guidelines for Recertification. Recertification Policies and Procedures V P a g e 1

During the first two (2)-year Recertification Period only, professionals also may apply any CEAPs earned from the date of their certification in their initial year of certification through December 31 of that year as credits towards the 80-point requirement of their first recertification two (2)-year cycle. Upon approval by the DRI International Staff of the submitted CEAPs, the Certified Professional s designation is deemed valid for an additional two (2)-year period, and the Professional is Recertified. DRI International must receive the individual professional s recertification CEAPs within ninety (90) days of the end of the two (2)-year Recertification Period (by March 31st). All DRI invoices for maintenance fees must be paid in full as invoiced by DRI International by March 31st of the year when recertification is requested. Recertification that has not been approved due to non-payment of DRI International invoices and/or non-receipt of CEAPs by September 30th in the year after the professional s second Recertification Year ends will cause DRI International to revoke the professional s certification. DRI International equates 1 contact hour to 1 CEAP (Continuing Education Activity Point. This ensures that professional activity other than direct contact/formal education qualifies for recertification credit. This also avoids any requirement to submit a large number of fractional CEAPs. The Executive Director of DRI International, will rule on the acceptability of all training and education Points not already contained in DRI International s Recertification Guidelines. Requests for exceptions to the DRI International s Recertification Policies and Procedures should be submitted directly to the Executive Director, DRI International. PROCEDURE for RECERTIFICATION of CERTIFIED PROFESSIONALS The procedure for recertification consists of the following steps: 1. DRI International sends to the applicant a notice of initial certification as a Certified Professional, including the effective date of certification. Certification becomes effective as of the date of notification in this Initial Certification Year, and can be on any date during the initial certification year. 2. DRI International sends invoices for annual maintenance fees for the next calendar year to all Certified Professionals by December 1st of each year. 3. The Certified Professional s two (2)-year Recertification Period begins on January 1st of the year following the Initial Certification Year. 4. The Certified Professional begins accruing CEAPs as of the January 1st in the first Recertification Year of the two (2)-year Recertification Period. Recertification Policies and Procedures V P a g e 2

CEAPs earned by the Certified Professional during his/her Initial Certification Year, and after the date of his/her certification may be applied to the 1st two (2)-year Recertification Period. No minimum numbers of CEAPs are required during each recertification year. However, DRI International strongly recommends that Certified Professionals plan to obtain 40 CEAPs during each year of the two (2)-year Recertification Period. 5. Upon receipt of payment by DRI International of Annual Maintenance Fees applicable to the Certified Professional s level of certification by no later than March 31st of each year, a Certified Professional Card indicating that the professional is currently a Certified Professional In Good Standing may be obtained on MyDRI. 6. Certified Professionals may submit proof of acquiring sufficient CEAPs at any time during the 1st and 2nd Recertification Year EXAMPLES of RECERTIFICATION CEAP s for CERTIFIED PROFESSIONALS All certified professionals should review the CEAP Guidelines ( that are posted on the DRI International web site at Also, Professionals are cautioned not to claim points for the exact same event/activity in multiple CEAP categories. For example, attending a seminar at a conference cannot also be claimed as a standalone seminar/class. Here are examples of typical questions certified professionals have asked about CEAP: QUESTION: I attended a BCP conference that lasted a day and a half. How many points can I count those toward CEAP s? CEAP#6 12points. Essentially 1 point per hour attended; but a 1-Day conference is awarded 8 points regardless of whether the day is 7 hours or 10 hours. Similarly, a half-day conference is awarded 4 points regardless of whether the day is 3 hours or 5 hours QUESTION: I ve attended various BCP related classes & seminars, some online, some in person and some webinars. How many points can I count toward CEAP s and is a webinar counted differently than an in person class? RESPONSE: All classes/seminars that are BC/DR/EM related are awarded points under CEAP#26 at a rate of 1 point per hour attended. As long as it is a stand alone class (not part of a conference), the venue (webinar, on line or in person) does not matter. However, you should always ask for a certificate of completion in case your point request is audited by DRI International. NOTE: Round partial SCHEDULED hours to the nearest hour. So, 1 to 29 minutes equals zero hours. 30 to59 minutes equals 1 hour. Recertification Policies and Procedures V P a g e 3

QUESTION: I regularly participate in seminars and web conferences hosted by ISACA or ISSA. I am a member of both organizations. While they focus primarily on information security, they also emphasize the importance of DR to overall security. Can I use the CPE credits I earn towards my CEAP s? CEAP#2-2 points per organization per year for simply being a member CEAP#5-1 point per hour of a formally scheduled meeting of the above organizations CEAP#7-1 point per hour at any special conference done by either of those organizations CEAP#26-1 point for each hour of any BC/DR/EM related classes (seminar, webinar, etc.) presented by either of those organizations QUESTION: I regularly speak at internal company gatherings on business continuity. Can I count those toward CEAP s? CEAP#9.1-2 points per presentation QUESTION: I meet occasionally with personnel from public agencies & utilities to exchange information about emergency planning and business continuity. Can I count those meetings toward CEAP s? CEAP#36-2 points for developing a plan for such interface meetings (per agency); not the meetings themselves QUESTION: I help to plan and organize all of our company wide exercises; and I plan, organize and manage BCP exercises for my department. What can I count towards my CEAP s? CEAP#20-10 points for each organization-wide (enterprise level) exercise relating to disaster recovery or emergency response. CEAP#22 1 point for each exercise that involves only a department or group (not encompassing the entire company or organization) QUESTION: I have completed a number of BIAs and BCPs this year. Can I count those toward CEAP s? NOTE: points can also be claimed for the associated facility risk assessments under CEAP#27. Recertification Policies and Procedures V P a g e 4

CEAP#29-16 points for each organization-wide ( comprehensive ) BIA. Conducting a BIA for a single department or refreshing a department s BIA is considered to be part of a comprehensive BIA; and does not count as separate CEAP s. CEAP#32 10 points for each new BCP (not the same as maintaining a BCP). CEAP#34 6 points for developing or implementing a BCP maintenance plan (each year) QUESTION: I am participating in the testing, coding and installation of a business continuity planning package (LDRPS). What can I count toward CEAP s? CEAP#34-6 points (one time only) QUESTION: I am working towards improving the controls for business continuity. What can I count toward CEAP s? CEAP#30-6 points (per year). Think of controls in this context as a strategy for mitigating risk via BCP QUESTION: In my current position I have audited all of the pre-existing plans and created emergency (contingency plans). What can I count toward CEAP s? Being a business continuity planner is a separate job from being an auditor of BCP s. If you are an auditor, then you can claim points in the same categories as a business continuity planner (see CEAP Guidelines for specific CEAP categories where this applies) CEAP#31 6 points per year for developing or maintaining emergency response plans. NOTE: Emergency response plans and business continuity plans are not synonymous. For example, there is a difference between plans for fighting a fire in a building (or evacuating) vs. relocating business functions to a different building because there is a fire in their building.
