1 Little Diggers: Design a Viking Longship! The Vikings used longships to travel for trade and battle. Have a go at building your own Viking longship! 3 Little Diggers: Design a Viking Longship Assembly Instructions Remember to ask an adult for help! 1. Cut out all of the shapes on the sheets (if you want, you can glue the sheets onto card first and then cut them out, to make them stronger). 2. Take the pieces labeled Front of ship, Back of ship and 'Hull of ship' (both Upper and Lower pieces) and colour in the four wooden planks on each one. 3. Take the Hull of ship piece and cut along the dotted line to make two pieces, Upper and Lower. 4. Take the piece labeled 'Front of ship' and cut along the two dotted lines near the top (make sure that the lines do not join- you want to leave the D/E tab still attached). 5. Score along the dotted line on the D/E tab. Fold the tabs away from each other and glue the back of the D tab to the back of the E tab. 6. Score along the edge of tab A. Fold tab A away from you and glue the nonprinted side to the tab A area of tab C of the 'Hull of ship- Lower piece. 7. Take the piece labeled 'Back of ship'. Score along the edge of tab B. Fold tab B away from you and glue the non-printed side to the tab B area of tab C of the 'Hull of ship- Lower piece. 8. Cover tab C and attached tabs A and B in glue and stick the wavy lines tab of the 'Hull of ship- Upper piece' over them, covering the tabs up. 4 9. On all the glued together pieces, score along the black lines that represent the wooden planks. 10. Gently fold the ship body in half, in line with tabs D and E. 11. Cover the left-hand tabs on the Hull of ship- Upper Piece and Hull of ship- Lower Piece in glue and stick them to back the Front of ship piece. Fold the Hull of ship pieces gently along the scored lines to create a curved edge and try to line up the wooden plank lines. 12. Repeat with the right-hand tabs and the Back of ship piece. Your ship should now be able to stand up on its base (the side with the wavy lines). 13. Colour in the four sides of the and pieces. 14. Score along the black lines and then assemble the two pieces into their shapes, gluing down the square ends last. 15. Colour in the Ship sail piece (make it as bright as you can!). 16. Cover the dotted tab area of the Ship sail piece in glue and stick it to the dotted tab area at the end of the shape. Glue one end of the shape on top of this to hold the bottom of the Ship sail in place. It should look like this: Ship Sail 17. Fold the sail round and glue the other edge to the top of the shape. It should now look like this: Ship Sail 18. Glue the bottom of the mast (marked with the checked square tab) to the inside of the ship at its centre.

5 19. Colour in the Dragon s Tail piece. Score along the black lines and fold and glue the two tabs to the square base. 20. Cover the speckled tab of the Dragon s Tail shape in glue and stick it to the speckled tab area on the Back of ship piece. 21. Colour in the Dragon s Head piece. Fold it in half and then cover the non-printed side with glue. Fold it around tabs D and E, making sure the head points away from the boat. The front of the boat should now look like this: 22. Cut out and colour in as many of the Shield Template pieces as you like. You could draw patterns or scary looking animals on the shields to frighten your enemies. When you have coloured in your shields, glue them along the edges of the ship. Your Viking longship is now ready to set sail!
