2 GOALS & OBJECTIVES Why You Should Attend: CVI s New Paradigms in Arrhythmia Management 2013 focuses on advances in available medical devices and pharmacologic therapy for the effective management of patients with atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias. Our Keynote Presentation features a report by Dr. Arthur Moss on the outcomes of the MADIT-RIT trial focusing on new programming algorithms to minimize inappropriate therapies and improve patient survival. We have assembled an impressive faculty of nationally recognized thought leaders and regional experts in the fields of electrophysiology, medical device and pharmacologic therapy of atrial fibrillation for this full day accredited CME event. Morning sessions also focus on new options for ICD placement, possible complications of ICD therapy and the use of echocardiography to maximize effectiveness of cardiac resynchronization therapy devices. Lunch sessions include patient case presentations helping to foster a better recognition and ability to distinguish between benign and high-risk causes of syncope. Afternoon sessions focus on recent changes to the landscape of available oral anticoagulant agents to manage atrial fibrillation, advances in remote device monitoring capabilities and the medico-legal implications for clinicians using remote monitoring, and the relationship between sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease. Target Audience: Cardiologists, primary care, emergency medicine, family practice, internal medicine and adolescent medicine physicians, radiologists, fellow, residents, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nurses. Learning Objectives: After attending CVI s New Paradigms in Arrhythmia Management: The Good the Bad and the Ugly CME program, participants will be better able to: Distinguish the values and limitations of non-transvenous ICD therapy Identify patients who may be appropriate for subcutaneous ICD implantation Recognize patient populations who might derive significant benefit from ICD therapy Identify morbidities and potential complications of ICD therapy in patients who may not significantly benefit from ICD therapy Recognize the factors influencing risk for malignant ventricular arrhythmias and heart failure in ischemic and non-ischemic cardiomyopathy Describe how the implantable cardioverter defibrillator and cardiac resynchronization therapy reduce the risk for sudden death and heart failure Discuss the rationale for reducing inappropriate ICD therapy by device programming with response only to ventricular tachycardia heart rates > 200bpm. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of echocardiography as a tool to diagnose dyssynchrony. Discuss the current trends in dyssynchrony research and pending trials. Distinguish malignant from benign causes of syncope Recognize various disease states associated with malignant forms of syncope Compare and contrast currently available oral anticoagulant agents for treatment of atrial fibrillation Identify patients and/or disease states for which the use of newer oral anticoagulant agents are not approved Utilize remote monitoring to improve recognition of patients with asymptomatic disease states who could benefit from treatment Intervene more quickly after arrhythmias and device malfunction are detected through remote monitoring Accept the clinicians responsibility to act upon information attained through remote monitoring Identify the underlying pathophysiology of sleep-related breathing disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome Discuss the impact of obstructive sleep apnea on cardiovascular health. Accreditation Statement: This event has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Pennsylvania Medical Society through the joint sponsorship of the Albert Einstein Medical Center and Cardiovascular Institute of Philadelphia. Albert Einstein Medical Center is accredited by the Pennsylvania Medical Society to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. Credit Designation Statement: Einstein Medical Center designates this live educational event for a maximum of 7.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the educational event.
