Compost for Organic Agriculture Canada Compost Council September 2014 Lindsay Fernandez-Salvador Technical Director

OMRI Mission OMRI s mission is to support the growth and trust of the global organic community through expert, independent and transparent verification of input materials, and through education and technical assistance.

Agenda Canada Organic Industry Basic Standards Compost Standards

Key Documents Canada Organic Regime Organic Products Regulations (OPR) COO Operating Manual V14 CAN/CGSB The Standard CAN/CGSB PSL Standard Interpretation Committee (SIC) Q & A CB Policy Manual? IOIA 4

Key Players Canada Organic Regime CFIA Canada Organic Office (COO) Organic Operator Certification Body (CB) Verification Officer (VO) Committee on Organic Agriculture (COA) Standards Interpretation Committee (SIC) Conformity Verification Body (CVB) IOIA 5

Key Processes Use of Compost and Inputs Certification body approves use Verification Officer observes input use Farmer Chooses Input

Organic Agriculture Guiding Principles Protect the environment, minimize soil degradation and erosion, decrease pollution, optimize biological productivity and promote a sound state of health. Maintain long-term soil fertility by optimizing conditions for biological activity within the soil. Maintain biological diversity within the system. Recycle materials and resources to the greatest extent possible within the enterprise.

Major No-No s Sewage sludge Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) Ionizing Radiation Nanotechnology Synthetic substances/chemicals (unless specifically allowed)

5.4 Soil Fertility and Crop Nutrient Management Provides for use of processed manures Provides for use of animal manure, such as liquids and slurries Provides for the use of composted animal and plant matter

5.5 Manure Management Stipulates the sources of manure one can use Gives the daysto-harvest rule

PSL Tables 4.2 and 4.3

Compost Feedstocks Plant and animal materials (free of risk materials) Mined minerals Inoculants Compostable Plastics Paper, cardboard

Composting Methods Off-farm composts require no particular method HOWEVER, the method should be sufficient to kill pathogens meeting CCME guidelines OMRI places raw manure restriction if pathogen levels exceed 1000 MPN for fecal coliform or 3 MPN for Salmonella

Heavy/Trace Metals Trace Elements Essential or beneficial to plants or animals Concentration (mg/kg dry weight) for Compost Arsenic (As) 13 Cobalt (Co) 34 Chromium (Cr) 210 Copper (Cu) 400 Molybdenum (Mo) 5 Nickel (Ni) 62 Selenium (Se) 2 Zinc (Zn) 700 Other Cadmium (Cd) 3 Mercury (Hg) 0.8 Lead (Pb) 150

Compost shall not contain any sharp foreign matter of dimension greater than 3 mm per 500 ml Compost shall contain no more than one (1) piece of foreign matter greater than 25 mm in any dimension per 500 ml. Foreign Matter

Pesticide Contamination Where contamination might be possible, the farmer must have documentation: To confirm absence of contamination To confirm common degradation of said contaminants

Compost Tea Compost teas may be used without restriction if made from compost compliant to on or off-farm compost annotations Best management practices to control or eliminate pathogen growth must be employed or 90/120 harvest rule will apply

Vermicompost Typical duration of composting for: Outdoor windrows 12 months Indoor container systems 4 months Angled wedge systems 4 months Continuous flow reactors 60 days

Vermicompost Typical duration of composting for: Outdoor windrows 12 months Indoor container management systems practices 4 months PSL requires demonstrated compliance with pathogen standards or best whether feedstocks are plant only or manure based. Angled wedge systems 4 months Continuous flow reactors 60 days

Anaerobic Digestion AD technology is not considered composting under COR because composting = aerobic process. AD products from manure feedstocks must have restrictions.
