1 Page 1 RIO DE JANEIRO / SALVADOR A Taste of Brazil Music and Cultural Tour (Optional Community Service Project and Cultural Shows at Night) 7 DAYS / 6 NIGHTS $1,975/student No Airfare included. 29/may Wednesday IN / RIO DE JANEIRO HD TOUR SUGAR LOAF (LD) Upon arrival, we are met by our guide and head to our hotel. Check in and depart to visit the Sugar Loaf Mountain. It was here, at the foot of Urca Hill, that the city of Rio de Janeiro was founded in 1565 by Estácio de Sá. Our visit is done in two steps by modern cable car. The first ride of the cable car links Praia Vermelha to Urca Hill, located 215 meters high, a point from which can be seen all the Guanabara Bay and its islands, the Flamengo landfill, the Corcovado and the Rio Niterói bridge, besides the majestic mountains that protect the city. The second part of our ride in the cable car takes to the top of Sugar Loaf mountain, at 395 meters, from where we can see the beach of Copacabana, the Santa Cruz Fortress, some beaches of Niterói and more fantastic scenery. Later that night, we depart from Hotel on an optional activity to a samba club with traditional samba music along with a wide variety of other Brazilian beats. Return to Hotel.

2 Page 2 30/may Tuesday RIO DE JANEIR0 HD WALKING TOUR (BLD) After breakfast we depart on a walking tour in the South Zone to see the famous bars and cafes where the singers began playing Bossa Nova. Along the sea front, the city preserves the memory of names such as Tom Jobim and João Gilberto, who wrote the first chords of the Bossa Nova. In the afternoon come back to hotel or depart to our optional community service activity. Morrinho Project 4 hours Depart to the Morrinho Project, a social and cultural project based outside the Pereira da Silva favela (slum) in the Southern Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Return to the hotel. 31/may Friday RIO DE JANEIRO HD WORKSHOP / HD CORCOVADO E SANTA TERESA /Optional RIO SCENARIUM (BLD) After breakfast we get ready for a musical percussion workshop focusing on Brazilian instruments and a trip into the origins of Brazilian music. In the afternoon, we travel to the base of the imposing Statue of Christ with arms outstretched over Rio on Corcovado Mountain, perhaps the most recognized icon of South America. Then we go to the charming district of Santa Teresa with its cobblestoned hilly streets,

3 Page 3 old homes, interesting museums and Rio's last surviving tram line. Stop for lunch and return to the hotel. That evening we have an optional activity to Rio Scenarium. Rio Scenarium, one of the best known places for music in Rio de Janeiro, located in historical Lapa district. This old renovated house has great music and a relaxing atmosphere. The interior of this restaurant/club is full of antiques and old cars. (And there is an old dentist's chair by the entrance!) This is not only spot where you can listen music, dance, eat or drink, it is a museum with spacious venue of three floors. Back to hotel. 01/jun Saturday RIO DE JANEIRO / SALVADOR O COLISEU 4 hours (BLD) We take an early AM domestic flight to Salvador da Bahia. Enjoy this famous city by foot and later in the day our optional activity is a folk show with dinner. O COLISEU The show begins with the presentation of the Orixás, the main divinities of candomblé. Through the dances and enchantments you ll get to know the gods yorubás and its colorful suits. The spectacle continues with ballads of fishing men and the maculelê, a fighting dance from Africa. Most part of the show is designated to the demonstration of the Capoeira, a fight introduced in Brazil for the African slaves as a defense way. The capoeira is rythmed by the berimbau, a one rope instrument that has an incomparable sound. Return to the hotel. 02/jun Sunday SALVADOR FD TOUR HISTORIC (BLD) After breakfast, we depart on our Cultural tour of the main sights of the city. The city tour leaves the hotel bound for one of the main sights of the city, Pelourinho. Situated in the historical center Pelourinho is an important colonial site, a designee of UNESCO s historical heritage and a symbol of the black movement in Bahia. The Pelourinho is home to important churches, museums, Brazilian artists studios, galleries, shops and restaurants. Our focus is particularly on the Largo do Pelourinho, Santo

4 Page 4 Antonio Além do Carmo, Elevador Lacerda and Mercado Modelo. We will visit the well know spots of Jorge Amado s House, Olodum s House, São Francisco and Cathedral Church, Cravinho Bar. Stop to shop and visit the Pierre Verger gallery, Goya Lopes (Bahia textile designer who seeks inspiration in the theme African Brazilian musicality in Bahia). Stop for lunch. After lunch the next stop is at Elevador Lacerda, building dated 1873 and in the present connects the two cities, the upper town to downtown and is an important way of transportation for tourists and residents. At this point students can observe a panoramic view of the All Saints Bay and Mercado Modelo. Next stop is at Mercado Modelo, the most important regional market place. In the same place you can be seen the Candomblé and Catholicism. The Last stop is at Ribeira s district to taste the ice cream of Ribeira ice cream shop, traditional in the city since 1931 with its coconut ice cream even referenced by the New York Times. Have dinner in the up beat Pelourinho. Come back to hotel. 03/jun Monday SALVADOR FD PRAIA DO FORTE / OPTIONAL BY NIGHT MIGUEL SANTANA THEATER (BLD) After breakfast, we leave the hotel and head to the Praia do Forte in the Northern Coast of Bahia. This region is considered the principal area of natural reserves, lakes and beaches with coconut trees in the country. First, we get our blood pumping with a 40 min walk on a trail inside of Sapiranga Reserve and check out the local environment, like birds and tropical vegetation. After this, inside the fishermen's village of Praia do Forte, we will visit the Tamar Project, preservation centre of marine turtles and swim and walk on the beach. We stop for lunch in a local fish and seafood restaurant. After lunch we depart to Salvador and get ready for the optional activity of the evening a show evening at "Miguel Santana". Folklore Dance Performance Miguel Santana Theatre: The folkloric and popular culture of Brazil were formed by the combination of three different influences: European, by the Portuguese colonization; African, by the slaves; and Indian, the natives from Brazil. Balé Folclórico da Bahia shows, in the pure state, some of the most important expressions of the Bahian folklore, and some dances of the Candomblé, African religion in which music and dance are one of the main factors. Program Balé Folclórico da Bahia: African Gods Ogum, Oxum, Omolú, Iansã, Oxossi, Fire s Dance, Fishermen s Dance, maculelê, Capoeira, Samba de Roda. Return to the hotel. Overnight.
