4 MFH started with a definition: characteristics of migrant-friendliness Acceptance of people with diverse backgrounds as principally equal members of society - equality Attention to different needs of people with diverse backgrounds for service development and provision of service - equal opportunity Compensation of disadvantages to enable people to participate in care processes equal opportunity 4

6 Assessments/Measurements Needs Assessments Focus groups in hospitals staff and patients were asked about main problems MFQQ Management was asked about status quo of organisational structures, processes and management systems concerning difference sensitivity 6

7 Results Needs Assessment European cross analysis: The six most important problem areas Language and Communication Patient info + education (linguistically & culturally adequate) Cultural barriers/lack of cultural competencies Family visits -7 Lack of culturally adequate food -6 Spirituality and social support Number of hospitals where problem was mentioned (NA results from 12 pilot hospitals) 7

8 The MFQQ The Migrant Friendly Quality Questionnaire an assessment instrument for monitoring Migrant friendliness of hospitals developed by LBISHM and pilot hospitals used in 2 surveys (2003/2004) Part A: MF characteristics of services (structures/processes) degree of implementation 0%-100% Part B: MF quality support system yes/no 8

11 What happened to the MFQQ after the project Austrian initiative to assess first baseline on difference sensitivity in Austrian hospitals Development of a Short Form SF-MFQQ (67 items) Rather informal request by Ministry of Health to hospitals to fill in SF (nearly) no response Translation of the SF MFQQ into Italian and French in the framework of the Swiss MFH initiative Published in Booklet Use in Swiss hospitals unclear 11
