1 Galerie NeC nilsson et chiglien Hong Kong presents STEEN IPSEN 18 May - 23 June 2012
2 Ipsen develops his sculptural shapes along with special themes and variations. Unit forms are repeated and combined to create unique objects. The sculptures are moulded according to certain rules: he wants to show the relation between chaos and order, simplicity and complexity. Over the last 7 years, he has worked with spherical shapes and colourful strings that he aggregates into a genuine spatial expression. In Ipsen s work, you can see a strong relation with geometry. Since the very beginning of his career, Ipsen has been deeply interested in the ornamental potential in the universe of geometry, but his sculptures suggest new interpretations of geometric abstraction. Steen Ipsen works with ceramics both in a formal and a decorative perspective. These two aspects are fully entwined. His sculptures can use various materials but ceramics remains at the centre of his oeuvre. Over the years, his works have become more radical and daring. However, they have always stuck to the leitmotivs of repetition and combination. Ipsen looks for powerful organic shapes matching with elegant and graphic expressions. The monochrome glaze covering his works reflects the light and mirrors the beholder, a play by which the sculptures tease and entice the viewers to consider the sophistication of their molecular structure. Then, the strings tend to underline their inner strength.
3 Steen Ipsen, born in 1966, lives and works in Copenhagen. He studied at the School of Art and Design in Denmark from 1984 to From 1996 to 2004, he worked as head of Institute of Glass and Ceramics, within The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design. Ipsen has been a member of the board of Danish Crafts at the Danish Ministry of Culture since He has participated in major exhibitions in USA, Brazil, Chile, China, Italy, Belgium, Germany, United Kingdom, France and Scandinavia.
