ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS Find out as much about the system (psi, rpm, horsepower and torque requirements) as you can. 3 MOST COMMONLY ASKED VALVE QUESTIONS: HOW DO I HOOK UP THE VALVE? Inlet and outlet are marked on the valve as well as diagrammed on the box. A and B (C, D, E and F if applicable) ports go to the cylinder ports. WHAT VALVE SHOULD I USE FOR LIFTING? For safety, a valve with a load check is necessary in order that the load does not drop before it begins to raise again when you are shifting out of the neutral position. The load check is a spring loaded poppet which prevents the oil from backflowing until enough pressure is created to raise the load. WHAT VALVE DO I NEED FOR A LOADER? The most popular valve is the SBAF2 which has a float position on the first spool allowing the oil to circulate to permit the bucket to ride the contours of the ground. The second spool is for a two way cylinder and is spring centered to neutral. Another option is the SBA22 which is spring centered to neutral on both spools but features no float. I HAVE A JOHN DEERE. (or any other closed center system). CAN I USE A STANDARD VALVE? All SBA valves are convertible to closed center by installing a closed center plug(#1v0206) and no relief plug (#1R0035) as shown in literature shipped with the valve. Valves may also be ordered already converted to closed center - such as the SBA2-CC featuring a tighter spool fit. HOW DO I HOOK UP SEVERAL VALVES IN SERIES? Replace the conversion plug on the outlet side of the SBA valve with a power beyond sleeve (#1V0208). Connect this line to the inlet of the second valve. Run a tank line from the outlet of the first valve (has priority) back to the reservoir. HOW DO I CHANGE THE RELIEF OR BYPASS SETTING ON A VALVE? Use a pressure gauge in the inlet to assure precise results. An SBA valve may be adjusted by turning the adjustment screw under the acorn nut on the handle end of the valve. Clockwise will increase pressure. The Converta relief is shim adjustable. The spring in the Converta is rated to To increase the pressure to 2000 a different spring (#1A0685) is necessary. Do not exceed the recommended psi for the valve. WHAT DOES THE #1V0294 DETENT KIT DO? This manual detent fits the SBA or Converta. The valve handle (and spool) stays wherever it is placed until moved by the operator. CAN I PUT A FLOAT OPTION ON A STANDARD VALVE? No, the end of the spool as well as the lands are different so a standard valve will not accept a float detent. Spools are matched to the individual valve bodies so changing a valve spool in the field is not feasible. CAN I PUT A PRESSURE KICKOUT ON A STANDARD VALVE? Pressure kickout or automatic return to neutral requires a special internal machining which must be done at the factory when the valve is manufactured. ( It is a standard feature on the SCD2E - logsplitter valve.) CAN I USE A STANDARD VALVE FOR A SINGLE ACTING CYLINDER? No. A standard SBA valve has no place for the pump oil to go as you are exhausting or lowering the cylinder. Consequently, the oil goes over the relief and overheats the system. Valves with spools for single acting applications may be special ordered from the factory. The Converta is convertible to single acting. HOW DO I IDENTIFY A VALVE? The CROSS computer stock number is stamped on the handle end of the valve body on recent valve. On older valves the Z casting number is on the back. Page 3

4 OPEN AND CLOSED CENTER SYSTEMS OPEN CENTER This circuit consists of a positive displacement pump, a directional control valve and either a hydraulic cylinder or motor an actuator which converts the hydraulic energy back to mechanical energy to do some type of work. In this type of system, the pump pumps constantly even when the valve is in neutral. In this neutral position, oil is circulated freely through the center of the valve and back to the reservoir. No pressure is developed until the valve is actuated and fluid is directed to the actuator. Advantages: Lower pressure except when working so there is less component wear and shock load Simpler design Less maintenance CLOSED CENTER The components are similar to the open center system except that the pump maintains a constant head of pressure in neutral. The valve is closed in the center or neutral position so no oil can flow through it. This is accomplished by either making the center portion of the valve spool solid, or by inserting a special closed center plug which blocks the power core of the valve. The pump shuts down in the neutral position but constant pressure is maintained. The relief in the directional valve must be eliminated since this pump contains its own relief. Failure to do this may cause overheating in the system. Advantages: Pump works only upon demand Oil is on stand-by pressure for quick response.

5 CONVERSION TO CLOSED CENTER BA VALVE OPEN CENTER PASSAGE CONVERTS TO CLOSED CENTER RETURN PASSAGE #1V0206 CLOSED CENTER PLUG (cc stamped on plug) END OUTLET This option provides for conversion from open center to closed center by blocking the open center flow passage and may be used in any standard CROSS BA valve incorporating the conversion plug/power beyond machining in the BYD port. The valve may also be ordered already converted to closed center at the factory. These valves have less clearance between the spool and body to minimize leakage between the spool and valve body which may result in creeping of the cylinder. Valves built as closed center are marked with "CC" on the closed center plug. To convert an open center valve, remove the short conversion plug and replace it with the #1V0206 closed center plug as shown. The relief on the handle end of the valve must be replaced with #1R0035 no relief plug.* Failure to do this will result in chattering of the relief caused by the constant bypass of oil and will build excessive heat in the system. An outlet must be plumbed to the tank to dump the oil from the return passage. Any restriction in the tank line of a closed center system caused by faulty quick couplers, a collapsed hose, etc. will damage the spool seals, washers and handle bracket resulting in external leakage around the spool. Reversing the tractor valve so that the outlet rather than the inlet is pressurized would have the same effect. These possible problems must be remedied in the system. In a closed center system the neutral pressure of a least 2250 psi sometimes causes leakage between the pressure core and the work ports enabling the cylinders to drift or creep. Reworking the valve at the factory to a class 1A spool fit will minimize this problem. Valves with class 1A spool fit may be special ordered from the factory and are marked "1A" on the handle end of the valve body as well as on the box. *(Kit #1V2015 contains both the #1V0206 closed center plug and the #1R0035 no relief plug.) Valves manufactured as closed center do not contain a relief and should never be installed in an open center system or converted to open center due to the possibility of personal injury or system damage!

The built in load check in this valve is a spring loaded poppet which prevents the load from dropping before it starts to raise again, when the operator is shifting out of the neutral position. This valve is spring centered to neutral but manual, spring centered detent kits are available for field conversion. Applications: 1. Will operate a double acting cylinders in a lifting or horizontal application. 2. Will operate a reversible motors when a hold position in neutral is required. Page 5

It is easily convertible for use in a closed center system, however, by changing two plugs. (CONVERSION TO CLOSED CENTER). The built in load check in this valve is a spring loaded poppet which prevents the load from dropping before it starts to raise again, when the operator is shifting out of the neutral position. 17 CONVERTA SCV-1 (#103980) Valve 4-WAY CONVERSION PLUG Rated to 2000 psi 25 gpm flow rating Open center (tandem) in neutral Forward, reverse and neutral positions 3/4" NPTF inlet and outlet, 1/2" NPTF work ports Built in relief valve preset at 2000 psi at 10 gpm Convertible for use as single acting or double acting 3-WAY CONVERSION PLUG The CROSS CONVERTA is a 3 position, 4 way, open center, spring centered directional valve. It is designed for use on a open center system where the pump supplies fluid constantly. In the neutral position the inlet is open to the outlet and the work ports are blocked (tandem center). A unique feature of this valve is that it is easily convertible from the basic double acting valve (as shipped from the factory) to a single acting valve by replacing the small 4-way conversion plug on the outlet side of the valve with the shorter 3-way conversion plug (also included with the valve). A manual detent (Part # 1V0294) is also available for this valve. This kit replaces the spring centering on the valve so that the valve handle stays wherever the operator places it until he/she repositions it. Applications: 1. Will operate a double or single acting cylinder. (This valve does not incorporate a load check so it is not intended for metered lifting applications or heavy loads.) 2. Will operate a reversible or one direction motor if a hold position in neutral is required. Page 15

It is designed for use on a open center system where the pump supplies fluid constantly. In the neutral position the inlet is open to the outlet and the work ports are blocked (tandem center). It is not field convertible to closed center since a special spool is required and the spool is individually matched to the valve body. The pressure kickout in the reverse means that the valve can be placed in detent (a hold position) for the cylinder to retract. When it is completely retracted, the pressure kickout will return the valve to its neutral position. It may then be reactivated for another cycle. This valve is designed for use on a open center system where the pump supplies fluid constantly. 23 SEQUENCE VALVE SQV SERIES (#128513) The CROSS sequence or SQV valve is designed to alternately operate a pair of agricultural guide marker cylinders on a row marker system. 2 position, 3 port (3/4-16 SAE) Rated to 2500 psi, 2 gpm Rugged construction 100% testing OPERATION: System diagram and valve layout represent the main cylinder "C" in retracted position (implement down), with marker cylinder "A" extended (marker up). Marker cylinder "B" is retracted (marker down). At the end of a row, cylinder "C" is extended to lift the implement pressurizing ports "A" and "B" through the sequence valve spool. Marker cylinder "B" would then extend (marker up). No flow would pass through "A" port since cylinder "A" is already extended. This condition causes a pressure drop between the "A" & "B" port ends of the sequence valve which shifts the spool to the "B" port end. Starting a new row, main cylinder "C" is retracted (implement down) pressurizing marker cylinders "A" and "B" to retract. However, port "B" flow passages are blocked by the spool and integral check in "B" port. Consequently, only marker cylinder "A" is allowed to retract (marker down). Upon completion of this row, main cylinder "C" is again extended, and the marker cylinder "A' is raised. The pressure differential on the spool shifts the spool to the port "A' end preparing marker cylinder "B" to be lowered. Once the implement and "B" port marker are lowered. the guide marker system will have completed its full cycle and be back in its original position. Page 21

Small amount of oil is fed under pressure loading seals to press thrust plates against gears to increase efficiency. Motor is reverse - oil drives the gear. Rotation marked with arrows on the flange of the pump - must be rotated correctly or shaft seal will be blown. Page 21

Units Have Straight Thread (ORB) Ports - Not Pipe CROSS has 19 different displacement or sizes. Pumps can supply up to 90 gpm & may be belt, pulley or direct driven. Side load should be kept to a minimum as these units contain a teflon lubricated sleeve type bearing only. See specification sheets or full line catalog chart for sizes and displacements offered. How To Size A Pump Ask customer how much flow is needed and what rpm pump will be running. If customer wants to approximate a tractor system usually requirement will be between 12 & 15 GPM. Use Nomographs (Full Line p.12) to figure required pump output if you need to move a cylinder at a specified speed. Pump flow will be determined by size of pump and the rpm it is running so you will need to know what rpm the power source is turning. Examples: 1725 Electric Motor 2600 Gas Engine 2250 Crankshaft After you know rpm, go to chart (grey full line p.2, pump tech sheets or performance charts) and find appropriate pump (model # and actual displacement) to provide the desired flow. Within a series the width of gears and body of the pump determine the cu. in. displ. per revolution or how much fluid may be pumped. Simple formula for gpm is [(Displ. * rpm)/231] * Efficiency (90%) Example : 50P023 At 2200 rpm (2.32 *2200)/231 = 19.9 gpm If horsepower requirement is a limiting factor it usually takes about 1 hydraulic horsepower for every gallon of flow at 1500 psi. Horsepower requirements are based on flow and pressure. Formula - [(Gpm * Psi)/1714 ]* (1/Efficiency) so 20 gpm at 2000 psi would be as follows: (40000/1714) * 1. 1 = 25.7 Hydraulic Horsepower Page 22
