3 2012 World Tournament Cost Every competitor, as with every other World Tournament, must attend the following events: Sunday July 8: Arrival Transportation: $80 or thereabouts depending on which airport you arrive from, to The Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. If your group requires more than the basic transportation to and from these airports to Atlantic City, each additional leg will be $25 per person (if staying at the Woodbridge hotels before or after). We are still working on this and won t know for sure but I believe this is a safe parameter to plan for. Monday July 9 : Gasshuku: $100 10:00am to 4:00 pm. This cannot be wired: it must be paid in cash at the event. Welcome Reception: $45 7:30 pm. Everyone will have a chance to gather here, relax and socialize after the Gasshuku. You will have plenty to eat at this lavish buffet with a choice of chicken, pork, fish, veggies, salads, etc. Informational packets with draw sheets and other essential instructions will be handed out at this function. Tuesday, July 10 Thursday July 12: Tournament: $100. Competitors fees are equivalent to the euro fees we have paid at past World Tournaments. Spectator Fees: 1 day $15, 2 days $25, 3 days $30. Thursday July 12: Celebration Dinner/Dance: $65 American and Swiss bands will be performing and we will also have a DJ. This will be similar to the Swiss 2008 party with food stations. The cost covers food and soft drinks. We decided on an all-cash bar so those under 21 aren t paying for something they can t enjoy. Beer will be around $5, glass of wine $6, so you can spend a little or a lot on liquor, which may run you an extra $40 for the evening. (These parties at past World Tournaments have cost about $100 per person for the night including limited libations) Breakfast each day in the Taj at a designated ballroom, and will cost $16 all inclusive of tax and gratuity. It will be buffet style, all you can eat and open from 7:00 am til 10:00 so competitors and everyone else will have a chance to eat. Seating is limited to 200 at a time so we will ask you to prepick a time on the ½ hour to arrive and be seated. We will let you know whether to bring you own Chest Protection. The wiring checking account has been sent with the invoice on April 30, All fees due by May 25 TH All fees must be paid in American dollars by May 25 TH, Once you have ed your completed invoice you will automatically see what you have to wire and pay in cash. A competitor form will come out shortly this week which will require one person to assemble all the information and back to us. We expect each team to make one payment by wire and bring the appropriate cash for Gasshuku and t- shirts.

4 2012 World Tournament Reservations Friday and Saturday nights are quite expensive at the Taj Mahal, about $400 per night: I suggest arriving on Sunday. If you decide to arrive earlier I suggest staying at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel, which is one block from the Taj: it will cost about $250 on Saturday night, a little less on Friday night. You then could walk over to the Taj on Sunday. Check-out at the Marriott should be about 1 pm and check-in at the Taj between 4 and 6 pm: you can store luggage at the Marriott after you check out or walk your luggage over the one block and have it secured at the Taj until you check in: enjoy the beach and the boardwalk while waiting for your room to be ready! Taj Mahal Reservations - we have a special discount when you arrive Sunday July 8 th, and depart by Friday morning July 13th. As I have indicated to most of you we have contracted with the TAJ MAHAL in Atlantic City, NJ for these dates. There is a tiered room commitment starting 90 days out from the tournament which states 1/3 of our rooms have to be booked each additional month. At this time we are about two thirds of the way. That means by June 1, 2012 everyone must be booked or we would lose the discount, lose the arena and have a catastrophe, so you all need to make your reservations ASAP. Your reservation isn t written in stone: you can cancel extra rooms 48 hours in advance of the event which is scheduled to run from July 8th to July 13 th, a date that took more than 6 months for us to agree upon. This is a package deal and the only way we could get this outstanding venue for our tournament. Don't try to save a few dollars by booking somewhere else: it will upset the whole matrix for this event. The rates are about 65% of what the actual charge would be: it is a phenomenal discount. I chose the TAJ because of its size (1500 rooms and the 60,000 square foot arena). Once at the hotel there is no travel involved at all: just roll out of bed, put on the gi and compete! 5 Fax: (609) Below you will see another hotel which is one block away, with cheaper rates for Friday and Saturday. They are about half the Taj Mahal s room prices for weekend days because it is not a casino hotel. If you want to spend more time in Atlantic City this is an option but the rooms are limited and will go fast,so you must book early. DO NOT USE THIS HOTEL DURING THE 5 NIGHTS WE HAVE BOOKED THE TAJ as I have explained above. Below are the reservation links for the Courtyard by Marriott Atlantic City. There is one for each day. Saturday, July 7th : =7/8/12 Friday, July 13th : e=7/14/12 If you click on the link you'll see that the dates and the 'Group Code' are already filled in on the left hand side under 'Check Rates & Availability.' In addition, they can call the Courtyard by Marriott directly at and tell the front desk that they are booking a reservation for the American Shukokai Karate Union event and the dates they will to book. The following rates are for a room with 2 beds: Saturday, July 7th : $ tax Friday, July 13th : $ tax This rate will be good until June 1, 2012 at which point they will be returned to the hotel inventory and sold at the rack rate,which could be as high as $200 for Friday July 13th night and over $300 for Saturday July 7 th so the hint here is to book early and save. If you are coming in earlier than July 8 th or leaving after July 13 th you should make your booking at this Marriott, but if you would rather come into familiar territory, then I can see if you could book at the Renaissance Hotel in Iselin (Woodbridge) where we had so many WCIC s and is next door to UYEE, the sushi restaurant that is so popular. Please let me know ASAP so I can see if is available and what they will charge. We will update with the Woodbridge Hotel website once we have concluded the arrangement CURRENCY EXCHANGE There is a TD Bank 2 blocks from the hotel at the intersection of Pennsylvania and Atlantic Avenue. FLIGHT INFORMATION I strongly encourage everyone to land at Newark Liberty Airport, which is a two hour drive to Atlantic City. It can take twice as long to get to Atlantic City from JFK, so avoid the traffic and headaches if you can. If you are arriving on Sunday, July 8 th we will transport you directly to the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. If you plan on leaving July 13 th please remember that the traffic is wildly unpredictable which means that you need to plan on 2-3 hours to Newark and 3-4 hours to JFK. Make your return flight later in the afternoon if possible to avoid having to leave Atlantic City very early in the morning. If you have any questions, give me a call.
