3 The Strategy For 30 years, Franklin New York Tax-Free Income Fund has adhered to a conservative, income-oriented strategy. The managers typically buy and hold attractively priced, high quality municipal bonds for the long term Focus on Income Historically, income has contributed much more to municipal bond total returns than price appreciation. In fact, for the 20-year period ended June 30, 2016, income generated over 94% of municipal bond total returns. 1 Thus, our fund managers focus on maximizing monthly tax-free income for shareholders to boost the fund s long-term total return potential. Specifically, they seek to provide income exempt from federal, New York state and New York personal income taxes. 2 And, since a growing number of New York taxpayers are affected by the alternative minimum tax, the fund as of June 30, 2016, had 0% exposure to AMT bonds (municipal bonds whose income historically has been subject to the alternative minimum tax). 2 Seek Quality, Value and Diversification Our managers and analysts search for high-quality, attractively valued bonds where they are comfortable with the credit fundamentals and the level of income they believe the bonds should provide. They build the fund s portfolio with diversification in mind, taking sectors, coupons, call structures and maturities into consideration. Buy and Hold for the Long Term Managers typically sell holdings only if they see an opportunity to enhance the fund s portfolio structure or its income-earning potential. This low-turnover strategy can help reduce fund trading expenses and potentially limit the fund s capital gain distributions. Plain Vanilla Approach Since municipal bond funds typically represent the more conservative component of a diversified portfolio, fund managers do not invest in derivatives, use leverage or make outsized sector bets which can increase volatility in municipal bond portfolios. Franklin manages its municipal bond funds with the traditional municipal bond investor in mind that is, the investor who seeks to earn monthly tax-free income. JOHN POMEROY, Portfolio Manager Unless otherwise noted, fund performance figures in this brochure reflect Class A and do not include the maximum 4.25% initial sales charge. If they had, returns would have been lower. Performance data represents past performance, which does not guarantee future results. Current performance may differ from figures shown. The fund s investment return and principal value will change with market conditions, and you may have a gain or a loss when you sell your shares. Please call Franklin Templeton Investments at (800) DIAL BEN/ or visit franklintempleton.com for the most recent month-end performance. 1. When ratings from multiple agencies are available, the highest is used, consistent with the portfolio investment process. Ratings reflect an NRSRO s opinion of an issuer s creditworthiness and typically range from AAA (highest) to D (lowest). The Refunded category consists of refunded bonds secured by U.S. government or other high-quality securities and not rerated by an NRSRO. The Not Rated category consists of ratable securities that have not been rated by an NRSRO. Cash and equivalents are excluded from this breakdown. 9. Class C: Prior to 1/1/04, these shares were offered with an initial sales charge; thus actual returns would have differed. 14. The 30-Day Standardized Yield reflects an estimated yield to maturity. It should be regarded as an estimate of the fund s rate of investment income, and it may not equal the fund s actual income distribution rate, which reflects the fund s past dividends paid to shareholders. 15. 8 WHAT ARE THE RISKS? All investments involve risks, including possible loss of principal. Because municipal bonds are sensitive to interest rate movements, the fund s yield and share price will fluctuate with market conditions. Bond prices generally move in the opposite direction of interest rates. Thus, as prices of bonds in the fund adjust to a rise in interest rates, the fund s share price may decline. Because the fund invests principally in a single state, it is subject to greater risk of adverse economic and regulatory changes in that state than a geographically diversified fund. The fund holds a small portion of its assets in Puerto Rico municipal bonds that have been impacted by recent adverse economic and market changes, which may cause the fund s share price to decline. Changes in the credit rating of a bond, or in the credit rating or financial strength of a bond s issuer, insurer or guarantor, may affect the bond s value. The fund may invest a significant part of its assets in municipal securities that finance similar types of projects, such as utilities, hospitals, higher education and transportation. A change that affects one project would likely affect all similar projects, thereby increasing market risk.
