1 Lists of English Department s and Awards (Information Last Updated ) The university sets the deadlines for scholarship applications, usually January 15 for graduate applications and February 1 for undergraduate applications. Links to scholarship application forms are provided at Students must complete the FAFSA in order to be considered for scholarships requiring evidence of financial need, but a completed FAFSA is not required if a student wishes to be considered only for merit-based scholarships. With one application, a student will be considered for all scholarships for which he or she is eligible. 7 List of English Department Awards (Information Last Updated ) For awards other than the Huffman Poetry Award, students must be nominated by faculty members in order to be considered. That is, unless otherwise announced, students do not apply for awards other than the Stephan Ross Huffman Poetry Award. The Huffman Poetry deadline is in the fall. The nomination deadline for the other awards will be announced in the spring. Students do not need to complete scholarship applications in order to be considered for the awards below. Writing and Teaching Awards from the Department of English Name of Award Required Classification Restrictions Attributes Approximate Value Alumni in $100 Communication Award Mary Sue Carlock Award for Best Sophomore Literature Paper First-Year Composition Awards Stephan Ross Huffman Memorial Poetry Award Sophomore undergraduate students. Freshmen undergraduate students. Award for best project by a TC major or minor in an ENGL 4366 or 4367 class. Winner selected by an alumni panel. Best critical essay written in a sophomore English class. For first year students who write the best essay in one of three categories. Award for an aspiring poet of any major. Submission of a single poem and a paragraph stating why s/he is Project to be judged on appropriateness of aim and audience, effectiveness of design, meeting of professional standards. Papers must be nominated by faculty (students do not apply). Current categories are Best Personal Essay, Best Expository Essay, and Best Research Paper. 8 J.T. McCullen Award for Best Advanced Undergraduate Literature Paper Teaching Awards for Graduate English Instructors Warren S. Walker Award for Critical Writing M.A. and Ph.D. students who are classroom instructors or document instructors for English 1301 and interested in receiving the award by the announced deadline, which is usually around November 1. Winner selected by a creative writing panel. Award for the best critical essay on a literary or linguistic topic written in a junior or senior level English class. Awards for Best M.A. Classroom Instructor; Best M.A. Document Instructor; Best Ph.D. Classroom Instructor; and Best Ph.D. Document Instructor. Award for the best essay in an organized graduate course in English. Chapters of theses and dissertations are not eligible. Stephan Ross Huffman s poetry.
