Document Overview This document is presented as a supplementary resource to a CDEC training session covering the use of and administration of a ONELAN digital signage system. Dependent on the size and structure of your digital signage solution, only parts of this document may be relevant to your particular setup and as a result your trainer may not have covered these within your session. Every establishment is completely different, as are their needs, aims and uses for the system and therefore training sessions will be different from establishment to establishment dependent on the user requirements and setup. This document forms part of a series of documents, of which this is the second and aims to run though the steps that need to be taken to assign a static IP address, and network settings to your NTB as well a an introduction to creating users, and permission relevance note that this will be covered in more depth in the document that explains ADHOC items. We hope that we have covered everything, but should you have questions or concerns, please feel free to log calls through your individual IT management helpdesk, and these will then be escelated to us or alternatively you can call and speak to a member of our helpdesk team. P a g e 3
Network Configuration Note that this document applies for the configuration of all NTBs no matter their "role" i.e. if they are to be "Standalone", "Publisher" or "Subscriber". Initial Connection Once you know the IP address of your NTB (whether it is connected to your network or you are connected directly), the first act of configuration that you may want to perform may be to set static network details on the box. If you do not know the IP address of the box, simply power down the box, and re - power it, and during the boot process the IP address will be displayed. If you are not in a position to connect the box to your live network, you can connect the box directly to a PC or laptop using a Cat5 or Cat6 patch lead. By default the box will always DHCP to therefore a quick way to connect to the box, is plug in directly to your laptop or PC, making sure that you change the IP address of the network adapter on your machine (seek help from your network team on this) to an IP address within the range of this address, an example of this is , all other settings on your network adapter such as subnet etc. are irrelevant as you are simply looking to make a direct connection to the box. Once you are satisified that your machine is configured correctly, you can connect to the interface of your NTB by simply typing in the ip address (most likely ) into your internet browser for example Microsoft Internet explorer. You will then be presented with a user name and password box, where the default values are recommended which are default username remote and default password 9999 we recommend that users keep this user account in place for ongoing maintenance, and this user account is a full administrator. Changing The Network Settings Changing the network settings of your NTB is far less challenging than say configuring a router, or other common network devices. To do this, simply click "Setup" in the main menu, then System, then network. P a g e 4
You will then be presented with the below screen which is a simply form, he fields of the form are are labelled with an explanation of the field's relevance and how to change the information within them. Once you are satisfied that your details are correct, simply select "Save", you may lose connection to your NTB's interface or be prompted with a message that says "The Address Of The NTB May Have Changed". You then have two choices, if you want to keep connecting to the NTB using your PC or Laptop, you will need to change the network adapter address of your device, as you did originally (again to an address within the range of the NTBs address), and then retype the new IP address into the address bar of your browser. If you feel that the box can now be connected to your network, connect it to the nearest wall port, or directly into a switch port (dependent on the boxes location). TIP Although the logical workflow for this configuration, is network address configuration first, you may want to configure the PROXY, CHANNEL & ON BOARD FIREWALL settings before you set the network configuration, so that you do not lose connection to the NTB. REMINDER Don't forget that when you connect your NTB to your network, if you have a managed switch for example a CISCO EDGE 2960 the ports that you connect to will need to be in the correct VLAN for your NTB to get full connection to the network. P a g e 5
Proxy Configuration Configuring the Proxy Settings is a simple process, if you click "Setup", "System" and "HTTP Proxy", as shown below. You will then be presented with the following screen, again with fields labelled, simply fill in the details that should be available from your system admin team, and click "Add and Restart NTB" See overleaf for an illustrative screenshot. TIP Your proxy server is likely to be configured to use NTLM as an authentication method, if there is no way to change this, or you would rather not, it is recommended that you create an exception to let your NTB or NTBs through the proxy server. Recommended authentication methods are BASIC or DIGEST if possible. P a g e 6
On Board Firewall Configuration Your NTBs on board firewall is used to control incoming connections to the NTB, an example of this is a live TV stream, dependent on how you are streaming content into your NTB will be dependent on what settings you use for this note that these stream in methods are covered more in the IPTV configuration document. To configure the on board firewall, simply choose "SETUP", "SYSTEM" and then "SECURITY", if you scroll to the very bottom of the page and tick the UDP Stream Activation tick box, and then insert the relevant port numbers into the fields for example 1000, this will then open port on the on board firewall, and make receiving a live tv stream possible. The menu route is shown below: - P a g e 7
Once you get to the firewall page, ignore all settings DO NOT TOUCH ANY OTHER SETTINGS. Now scroll back to the top of the page and click the button to save security settings. P a g e 8
Introduction To Adding Users & Access Control This section covers adding user accounts to your NTB (the role is irrelevant), if your user needs access to an NTB they will need to be added to each NTB that they need access to, so for example if we want someone to have access to a local ADHOC message i.e. a message that only needs to change on the screen in question (for example the head of PE wants to put a message about football training outside PE), then that user account will need to be created on the subscriber in question. NOTE THAT THIS IS COVERED IN MORE DEPTH IN THE GUIDE TO ADHOCS DOCUMENT PART OF THIS SERIES To add a user, in the main menu click "SETUP", "SYSTEM" and "USERS" as shown below: - Now simply click the "Add User" Tab, as shown in the below screenshot. Which is also labelled with advice of what details need filling in, followed by a breakdown of what each tick box give the user access to: - P a g e 9
The tick boxes on the screen in the previous page give the user different rights, below is a list and explanation of the different categories. System Settings - Allows the user access to the complete system menu and therefore the ability to change screen resolutions, IP addresses and many important changes to the system (only recommended for IT staff or system administrators). Status Monitor - Allows users to view various status screens such as CPU usage, so that if there were errors on the system, it would be obvious to the user in question. Layout Manager - This allows the user complete access to all layouts, the ability to add layouts, delete them, copy them and edit them. Layout Editor - Allows users to edit layout designs. Activate Channel - Allows users the ability to change channels of content on the publisher, this may be useful for someone who needs to update details on a number of screens from one central point. Publish Channel - This allows the user to publish out changes that they have made to the system. Adhoc - This enables a user to be able to edit adhoc items, this is the most common reason for creating a user (to give them access to adhoc areas). XML Control - Allows users to edit newsfeed addresses, and other incoming XML settings. FTP Read / Write - Allows a user to be able to remove, delete and upload files to the ntb. FTP Read - Allows the user to view media items saved on the box from their desktop machine. P a g e 10
Practice Labs / Excercises To get you used to using the system we have created a number of labs or excercises for you to be able to explore and use features explained in this part of the guide. Lab 1 - Change The Network Configuration Of Your NTB Lab 2 - Add A Proxy Server To Your NTB (even if false) Lab 3 - Open Port 3000 On Your NTBs On Board Firewall Lab 4 - Add A User With Adhoc Rights To Your NTB Lab 5 - Log In As Your Adhoc User P a g e 11
