Herwig JANSSENS XIOS Hogeschool Limburg, Diepenbeek, Belgium The XIOS Hogeschool Limburg in the Flemish part of Belgium is a technical university with about students in four departments (see annex): Department of Commercial Sciences and Business Administration Department of Social Sciences Teacher Training Department Department of Industrial Sciences and Technology Engineering (IWT) This last department provides an education as master in industrial engineering in building and construction engineering, electro mechanics (automation), electronics (ICT), packaging technology and nuclear technology. Master in industrial engineering The specialisation in nuclear engineering was established in the fifties of last century, parallel with the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre SCK CEN in Mol, in the period of promotion of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. During some decades the main topic of the institution was the education and training of engineers for the nuclear energy sector. The specialisations offered were nuclear electronics and nuclear chemistry. Over the years nuclear and radiological applications became more and more available outside the strict nuclear energy sector, especially in the radiological sector (medical nuclear techniques, science, radiological industry, ) and the non-nuclear industry (NORM-industry). Gradually there was a demand for engineers with a nuclear and radiological specialisation outside the nuclear energy sector. As a consequence and over the years the XIOS Hogeschool Limburg has adjusted its specialisations to the growing needs. XIOS Hogeschool Limburg, Department of \presentation workshop valencia HJ.doc 1

2 The specialisation of nuclear chemistry developed into a specialisation of environmental technology radiochemistry. The students get a base in nuclear and radiological physics, nuclear measurement techniques, radiobiology and radiation protection, but their main topic is in environmental technology and radiochemistry. The specialisation of nuclear electronics developed into a specialisation on nuclear techniques, with two options: medical nuclear techniques and nuclear techniques. These students get a more thorough introduction into nuclear (applied) sciences and technology with nuclear and radiological physics, nuclear measurement techniques, radiobiology and radiation protection, medical nuclear equipment, nuclear electronics, digital techniques, medical/digital image processing and following their choice nuclear reactor study or medical nuclear techniques (including dosimetry). It s the aim of our institution that all the graduates can be considered as radiation expert, conform to the definition of the qualified expert as stated in the European Directive 96/29/Euratom. Over the last 10 years a yearly average of 12 students graduated as engineer in nuclear technology. The former 2-cycle system (2+2 y) is gradually transformed into the Bologna bachelor-master system (3+1 y or 3+2 y), the process to be concluded in Postgraduate courses Together with our colleagues from ISIB-Bruxelles, and with the two nuclear research institutes SCK CEN and IRE we are providing a training course for the radiation expert. This course meets the requirements of the Belgian law concerning the qualification and training of the expert in radiation protection, which is based on the definition of the qualified expert as stated in the European Directive 96/29/Euratom. This one year course provides a 120 h broadbased curriculum, representing 20 ECTS. The curriculum is based on the European Communication Com(1998)87def. and is separately presented in French (ISIB) and in Dutch (XIOS). We also provide a 50 h radiation protection course for hospital people (nurses, ), following the requirements of the Belgian law. International cooperation Together with the Czech Technical University Prague, the University of Applied Sciences Aachen, the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and the Haute Ecole P.-H. Spaak Brussels (ISIB) we participated for three years in an Erasmus Intensive Program (IP), with the title 'Practical Approach to Nuclear techniques PAN'. This 2-week course was held twice in CTU Prague, the third edition being organised in Belgium by ISIB with the help of SCK CEN, IRMM, and ULg. A fourth course was held in 2005 in Prague, without European support. A new IP project called 'Stimulation of Practical Expertise in RAdiation and Nuclear Safety SPERANSA'is submitted for XIOS Hogeschool Limburg, Department of \presentation workshop valencia HJ.doc 2

3 Research The Nuclear Technological Centre NuTeC of our department is doing (applied) research in nuclear technology. 5 engineers and PhD's are involved with this research, of whom 2 full time, in the field of: Radiological measurements in the non-nuclear industry Implementation and optimisation of quality assurance in nuclear medicine Design of new CT/PET-camera Tracing and prevention of radiological contamination in the waste and recycling industry For some of these projects we get European, Belgian or Flemish funding. We work together with the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre SCK CEN, with some Belgian Universities (Brussels, Hasselt) and with the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control FANC-AFCN. In the field of radiation protection we work together with the Belgian Association for Radiation Protection BVS-ABR, mostly in the field of the international recommendations, the European directives and the national law. Some of our work has been presented on the international radiation protection education and training conferences in Saclay (1999), Madrid (2003), Brussels (2005).
