1 Safe Places and Safe People Lesson Plan: KS2 Age: 7-9 years Teachers Notes Page 1 Lesson Aim: To develop awareness of safe people and safe places in their life Lesson Objectives: Children can describe different feelings and their responses to these feelings Children can specify the difference between safe and unsafe people and places Children can identify where and how to access sources of support Preparation & Requirements Interactive whiteboard or screen Whiteboard / flipchart Paper and pens Access to YouTube Paper plates and sticks for Extension Activity Print off hand outline and person outline templates (if being used)
2 Page 2 Exercise 1: My feelings On the interactive white board bring up the feelings slide and talk through each of the feelings to ensure the children understand and can identify with each one: Happy Sad Angry Lonely Scared Excited Worried Ask the children to raise their hands and give examples of situations when they might feel each of those feelings. Keep a note of the suggestions the children give. Discuss how the children may feel in these situations e.g. included, loved, cared for, left out, unnoticed etc. Extension activity Give each child a half paper plate and a stick, ask each one to draw one of the emotions/feelings discussed onto the plate, when everyone is complete go around the class and ask each child to share their emotion/feeling mask. Play Horrid Henry Runs Away Clip (0.37secs to 2.40 secs) Why does Henry decide he will runaway? What things have happened in his life to cause him to take this decision? What feelings do you think Henry is having? Is Henry s decision safe or unsafe? Who knows that Henry has made this choice?
3 Page 3 Exercise 2: Safe People Ask the children to think of people who can help them when they are having some of the sad or worried feelings, encourage children to think of trusted adults who they know e.g. parent/carer, teacher, mentor, gran/granpa, social worker etc Sometimes when we have a worried or sad feeling we may think being on our own is the best choice, reinforce to children that it s important to talk to someone safe about how they feel, rather than making an unsafe choices remind children of Henry s story and the choice he made. Ask each child to look at their hand, hold their thumb, and for each of their fingers think of one person they can go to for help. This activity can be extended by drawing around a hand and writing the names of the people on the hand or using our hand outline template. Exercise 3: Safe Places On the interactive white board bring up the slides with the pictures of places on it. Ask the children to vote on each of the locations: thumbs up if they think it s a safe place, thumbs down if they think its an unsafe place to go to if they needed help. When the voting is complete look at the pictures and ask the children why they think these locations are safe/unsafe and what kind of help they think they could get? Discuss if there is anything that can make any of the safe places become unsafe at certain times, e.g. other people who use the places.
4 Page 4 Exercise 4: Staying safe advice Ask the children to think about how they would tell others in their class and school the best way to stay safe and what to do if they were feeling unhappy. This could be done in creative ways via a poster, song, drama or presentation at an assembly. An alternative activity : Give each child a person shape and ask them to write their advice on the person, you can hang these up on a string in the classroom as a reminder or make a display so that the rest of the school can see the advice Remember to reinforce the children s understanding of safe adults and safe places in their life.
