4 6 7 LANDSCAPE AND GEOLOGY Peaks ad corries The Rodae massif is packed with peaks. Oe side of a peak is typically a getly slopig, rouded ladform, but this is suddely replaced o the other side by precipitous cliffs ad caverous corries. The shady corries have bee excavated by ice ad sow over thousads of years. The Rodae moutais mostly cosist of feldspathic quartzite (sparagmite), which forms characteristic, blocky screes ad block fields. Traces from the Ice Age The deglaciatio after the last Ice Age has left clear traces i the terrai. Valleys ad corries were excavated by the ice, while glacial meltwater rivers carved arrow gorges. Large quatities of gravel ad stoes were deposited. The gravelly mouds, ridges ad deep hollows at Skragelhaugae, south of Dørålseter, form a strage ladscape. The hollows are kettle holes formed where blocks of ice buried i gravelly debris melted, leavig crater-like hollows. Roads, the railway lie, hydroelectric schemes, agglomeratios of weeked cabis ad geeral huma disturbace have broke these migratio routes ad reduced the habitat. The reideer ow form sub-strais i various fragmets of their former habitat. Some wild reideer roam the Dovre ad Rodae atioal parks ad make up the sole remaiig strai of the origial Euro-Asiatic tudra reideer i Scadiavia. Remais of former trappig ad hutig cotraptios show where their migratio routes used to go ad how they used the area. Few alpie areas have such extesive plateaus over 1200 metres above sea level as Rodae. The birds which are characteristic for this area are therefore adapted to livig above the tree lie. If you have a valid fishig permit, you ca try to get a bite. For may years, Rodvat was thought to lack fish, but ow char have bee foud i this lake, too. Less acidic precipitatio has improved the coditios for fish.

7 12 13 HISTORY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE RELICS Traces of hutig ad trappig You ca fid umerous traces of aciet hutig ad trappig practices i Rodae. Wild reideer have probably bee huted here for years. The remais iclude pitfalls, guidig feces, stoe huts, shelters at the foot of overhagig cliffs ad vast umbers of hides semi-circular stoe walls where bowme lay i hidig to shoot their quarry. The hutig sites vary i size ad are situated where the wild reideer had their migratio routes. Remais of large, mass trappig sites have bee foud i Verkilsdale, a valley i the cetre of Rodae, at Storgrava i Haverdale ad Eisethø i Grimsdale. The umerous relics from hutig ad trappig bear witess to early settlemet i the area, ad several Stoe Age habitatio sites have bee foud. A moutai woderlad Over the ages, may stoe huts have bee built i Rodae. Some were used by huters ad fisherme from the valleys, others by falco trappers from Germay or British moutaieers.
