1 Student Exchange Programme

2 Identify University Application BI Student Exchange Programme Student Exchange will give you the opportunity to get an international experience and study management practices in an international business environment and culture. Through Student Exchange you will improve your language skills and develop a network of international contacts to draw on throughout your professional life. The credits you take while on exchange will be approved in your BI degree and by going on exchange you get a two-in one-deal a Norwegian recognized diploma with an international flavour. Finding a suitable exchange university is a time-consuming process and we recommend you to start as early as possible. Be aware that the course portfolio differs between the exchange institutions and it is your responsibility to make sure the institutions you apply for are applicable to your BI study programme and academic calendar. This gives you the opportunity to be considered for both programmes in order of priority. Bachelor in International Marketing The two first years at BI and the third year at one of the following institutions: Singapore, China, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, or Spain. University of California Berkeley Extension Bachelor in Entrepreneurship/Retail Management. Students can take a study abroad semester at Berkeley. You apply using the Student Exchange online application form by the 1st of February. Bachelor in Marketing/ økonomi og administrasjon. Students can apply for a specialisation in entrepreneurship in their 6th semester. Application by the 15th of April submitted to the bachelor administration. Applicable only for 2010/2011 students. Students participating at the Berkeley Extension programme must pay an additional fee of (subject to change) on top of their BI tuition fee. This is not covered by Lånekassen. Admission Departure Practical information Costs and tuition BI s exchange programme is based on bilateral agreements, which means that you are not paying any tuition fee to the exchange university. You will pay the regular BI tuition fee and SIO fee. Please note that there may be other minor fees to pay and that travel, accommodation, and living expenses must be covered by you. Lånekassen (State Educational Loan Fund) Students who are entitled to support from Lånekassen in Norway are also entitled to this during the student exchange. In addition to the regular loan and/or scholarship you will also receive a travel scholarship for one return ticket to your destination. Please note that you are considered a BI student and not a study abroad student and you are therefore not entitled to a tuition fee scholarship from Lånekassen. Language Scholarship Lånekassen offers a language scholarship of NOK to students who complete a preparatory language course. In order to receive the scholarship, the courses must be taught in languages other than English, Danish, or Swedish. Please note that there are other requirements that must be fulfilled in order to receive the language scholarship. For more information see: Scholarships Erasmus All students going on exchange to a university in an EU member country, are entitled to receive a scholarship from the Erasmus (if Erasmus partner) programme. The scholarship is distributed automatically and no application is necessary. The amount differs each year, but is around NOK per month. Nordplus Students going to Nordic countries may receive a scholarship through the Nordplus programme. The amount is approximately NOK per month plus a travel scholarship. The size of the travel scholarship depends on the destination you are travelling to. The above mentioned scholarships do not reduce the scholarship or loan students receive from Lånekassen. Please read more on the web under the costs and scholarship section. Housing As a general rule, universities hosting exchange students assist them in finding accommodation. Some universities have dormitories; others expect you to look in the private market. Useful sources of information are the university s home page and the student reports from former exchange students. Partner Institutions Please note that some of the universities are only available for Bachelor students (indicated with a B) and some only for Master students (indicated with an M). Some universities are only available for either the spring or the fall semester. More detailed information about the exchange universities can be found on Promoting the Student Exchange Programme Our exchange agreements are based on a balance of incoming and outgoing students. We therefore expect you to: 1. Promote the Student Exchange Programme at your host institution 2. Take part in a Student Exchange Fair when you return to BI 3. Write a student report Please read for detailed information. International.office@bi.no Phone:

5 BI Faculty and career service Adriana Jansen, Careers Service Whether your vision is to work abroad or at home you will most certainly be a part of a global economy as well as an international job market. In a world of opportunities it is truly important to recruit young professionals with a broader international view. Successful and fast-moving Norwegian companies appreciate international experience when they look for candidates for their most attractive positions. Rolv-Petter Amdam, Professor of Business History What business needs today are managers and employees with international experiences and perspectives. I will strongly recommend that you consider being an exchange student for one semester. It is only by being in another country that you will get a feeling of how to do business and how to behave in another cultural context. Your skills when it comes to socializing, cooperating and negotiating with people from other cultures will be improved. It is important to gain international experience! Dag Morten Dalen, Professor of Economics As businesses become more globalised, it is becoming more and more crucial to understand how other parts of the world think. By going on exchange you will gain new perspectives and be in a better position for understanding global markets. Tor Wallin Andreassen, Professor of Marketing Professor of Marketing Three reasons for going on student exchange: 1. Learning from professors and students outside BI 2. The labour market is becoming more and more global. International experience is important for your CV 3. Norway needs managers with an international frame of mind. Previous students about the Student Exchange Programme Mette Vaaler Morseth, BSc in Business, Tec de Monterrey, Mexico Exchange is an opportunity of a lifetime. While I was abroad I met people from all over the world, and learned more than I could have learned from any textbook. You have to overcome challenges and maybe step out of your own comfort zone a couple of times - but it is guaranteed to be a fantastic semester and I have yet to hear about anyone who regrets their decision of taking an unique travel like this. Lene Reichborn, Tor Vergata, Italy My exchange period in Rome has been one of the most memorable periods of my life. I got to do something totally different, exciting and fun, while still approaching my degree. International experiences are highly valued in the labour market, and gives you a competitive advantage. You will really miss out if you don't go on exchange... Lene Mamre Sandersen, E.M. Lyon, France Going on exchange has given me the opportunity to challenge myself when it comes to living together with people from other cultures and living in a non-english speaking country. You get friends for life, learn in a different way and get a grasp of the importance of understanding cultural differences. Going on exchange will give you valuable experiences that will give you an advantage later on in the business community. Hakan Narci, Bachelor in BBA, Nanyang, Singapore A fabulous change in your daily life and a challenge in your academic studies. You become more attractive on the labour market and living abroad gives you a wider perspective on culture and cultural differences. Fam Hotvedt Gjerløw, Koc University, Istanbul, Turkey I had a great exchange period in Istanbul. If you like new experiences and a different culture from your own, I recommend Istanbul. There are lots of things to do and see in the old and beautiful city that consists of both an Asian side and a European side. Academically, it was different in the sense that the professors used teaching methods such as, quizzes and midterms, but personally this only made it easier for the final exam when you got used to it. My advice is; Explore Istanbul
