Be sure to visit: Ancient cities: Although the Aztec civilization was at its height at the time of the conquest, there are surprisingly few sites left. The people who left behind the most impressive cities were the Maya. After their civilization fell about a millennium ago, the jungle closed in around their temples, protecting them from those who would carry off their treasures. The most famous of these sites is the ancient city of Chichén Itzá in the Yucatan region. There are also the ruins of Tulum and Coba, located at the southern end of the Riviera Maya. Below the surface: Still considered one of the world s premier diving destinations, Cozumel s waters are home to a vast array of sea life, from waving sea fans and moray eels to manta rays and the more than 500 species of fish that make their homes along the beautiful Maya Reef.
