1 Lydiate Primary School Music Policy Introduction This policy outlines the practices followed in the teaching of Music at Lydiate Primary School. This policy is intended to complement and fully implement the statutory requirements of the 2014 National Curriculum, whilst never forgetting the needs of our own children and the professionalism of our staff. Policy Statement Music is an expressive language for individuals to use as a form of communication and teaching. As a positive art form it enhances the holistic development of the child. Music has an excellent tradition in our school that is continually enhanced by seeking new and exciting opportunities for the children to develop through: in particular using music as a teaching tool; developing Wider Opportunities Provision and maintaining a wide range of instruments that can be learnt. The main aim of music in Lydiate Primary School is to enable all children to: achieve their full potential; to adopt sensitivity to others; to enable all children to access a full enriched music curriculum; to develop their understanding and enjoyment of music; to develop good quality listening skills and to enhance the teaching and learning of all individuals. Aims The broad aims of teaching music at Lydiate Primary School are to: achieve and enjoy the music they create; develop an understanding and become aware of musical traditions and cultures from different places and times; build up a knowledge of musical concepts and skills, including basic vocal and instrumental skills and a foundation of musical literacy through the inter-related aspects; develop the ability to work constructively as a member of a group, building upon the individuals self-confidence and self-esteem; develop a sensitive response to sound in general and a lifelong enjoyment of music off all genres, both as a listener and a performer; encourage, sensitively, children who show an aptitude towards music to explore their talents, so that their potential is fulfilled; develop effective listening skills and aural abilities; explore music as a teaching and learning tool. Organisation and Management Music is a creative subject within the National Curriculum. There will be a range of activities that will encourage the individual to explore their creative potential. The children need to understand and gain first hand experience of Music Policy 2014 K. Moss 1

2 the inter-related aspects of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure. Either the Class Teacher, HLTA s or the Music Leader for approximately one hour per week, teaches music through a range of opportunities. The children will experience a range of class, group and individual activities, including: listening (recorded or live performances), composing, improvising and instrumental (with emphasis on voice and classroom percussion) tasks. The children will also be introduced to Stave House, a practical system for teaching notation, in either nursery or reception (currently this initial introduction is carried out through Aintree School of Music. This then is integrated into all KS1 music lessons. The children will benefit from use of the tuned and untuned percussion instruments available. The teachers can make use of Cheranga, Music express, the BBC singing programmes, QCA schemes of work, LCP schemes, the Wider Opportunities Programme (WOPs) to support and resource their teaching. A new specific scheme for each learning phase will be rolled out between (in line with the updated music curriculum). Where possible, links will be made to other curriculum subjects to enhance and ensure the children experience a broad and balanced curriculum. Music, in particular singing, can be used as a teaching tool as well as a transition activity. In Key Stage 2 the children will also benefit from exploring the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra education programme (when appropriate), culminating in a visit to the Philharmonic Hall for a live concert performed by the orchestra during the spring term on a regular basis. Pupils in Key Stage 1 and Foundation, where appropriate, will attend specifically designed concerts in the area, including those performed by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Wherever possible, opportunities will be sought to bid for specialised performances and workshops from experienced and noted musicians (e.g. 6pac Jazz, Lin Marsh & Shirley Court for voice, Sefton Schools Music Services). The teacher, with support of the Music Leader where needed, ensures the tasks are appropriately differentiated to allow the children to develop at their own pace. Resources will be selected to match the needs of all the children according to their age and ability. The development of the voice as an instrument is prominent throughout our school. Currently the Year 5 & 6 spends one term a year developing performance skills through, primarily, the voice. This culminates in a performance each term (supported by the concert choir). This modular system for year 5 & 6 ensures that they cover the core elements to a high level of understanding and application. Years 3 & 4 have a vocal development class, which teaches the music curriculum through, primarily, the voice. All children also study composition, improvisation, listening and appraising. 3 all children learning music notation. Every opportunity is taken to develop performance, actively seeking new projects within school and in the community. Currently the school has a variety of different choirs across the whole school, including a separate Boys and Girls choir and choirs that develop the more able children who have the opportunity to work towards formal exams. All children develop their singing voices through specific Key Stage Assemblies, which are tailored to their age and needs. Good technique is always promoted and encouraged Where possible, instrumental teaching will be sought for individuals and small groups (peripatetic teaching staff) and whole class (wider Opportunities) through SSMS. This is dependent on financial restraints and will be reviewed each year by the Music Leader, Head Teacher and SSMS. Monitoring, Assessing, Reporting and Record Keeping: The scheme of work in place throughout the school ensures the development and progression of the individual appropriate to age and ability. It is revised and updated in accordance with the National Curriculum. The children s progress is monitored through observation within class activities and performances, including contributions to whole school productions and presentations. Where possible recordings will be made to acknowledge achievements reached. These will include: performances, compositions and rehearsals. Written work is also carried out and recorded each year, including notation. These will also form part of the children s self-evaluation. Gifted and Talented Immense proportions of our children, at present, are musically literate and learn at least one musical instrument (including voice). These children will be encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities within school and those organised by Sefton Music Services. It is important to provide for these children within the curriculum to enable them to develop their musical skills. This can be achieved by providing open ended tasks, groupings of similar abilities to challenge their musical development, mentoring of their peers and children new to an instrument and providing opportunities for regular performances. The Music Leader will provide advice and support when requested. Equal opportunities and Special Educational Needs Music is an opportunity for all children to participate to their full potential. Therefore all children will be able to access the music curriculum regardless of race, gender or needs. Music is an excellent medium through which all children can feel a sense of achievement. 4 Health & Safety All children are taught the correct way to handle and carry all the music resources and they are encouraged to do so at all times, especially when collecting resources from the shared areas. Any damages and breakages should be reported to the Music Leader as soon as possible. Instruments with mouthpieces should not be shared to prevent the spread of infection. However, the school has a small selection of recorders that are sterilised after every use to ensure children take an active role in music lessons and extra-curricular activities. Instrumental Work All children from Year 2 upwards are introduced to learning an instrument. Initially they start with the recorder as part of the Year 2 music curriculum (during the summer term usually). From Year 3 they can select to continue with voice, recorder and/or take up an additional instrument if they choose to. The children are encouraged to continue this throughout the school with a minimum time of a one-year commitment. In Year four we will endeavour to provide all children the opportunity to learn an instrument; at present this is violin and clarinet. As their skills develop, they are encouraged to take part in the extra-curricular activities both in school and through SSMS. Regular performances in a termly assembly are encouraged and through a school concert or concert series which either take place during the summer term. A wide range of performance opportunities will be explored to enable the children to develop their skills and confidence. Peripatetic Staff Currently we offer Strings (including guitar) and Woodwind instrumental lessons to the children. We buy into Sefton Music Services and have three peripatetic teachers who supply tuition during the school day. We also provide Year four children the opportunity to learn an instrument (without paying tuition fees or hire of instrument) as a class; this will either be for half a year or the whole year depending on the year group size. At present this is violin and clarinet, we will seek further options as and when finances allow. Extra-Curricular Activities At present the school boasts 4 performance choirs within Key Stage 2 and a Lower School choir. The rehearsals form part of the curriculum throughout the academic year and extra-curricular activities. However, when preparing for performances and concerts, it is frequently necessary to extend these times. The school is developing its opportunities for instrumental ensembles and currently has a woodwind ensemble and is benefitting from the the Wider Opportunities Programme. The school also offers a Theory and Aural Club specifically designed to encourage, assist and develop the necessary skills for those children who are working through the ABRSM or LCM graded examinations on their instruments Music Policy 2014 K. 5 (currently: voice, woodwind and strings), as and when needed. The children also have the opportunity to work towards graded exams in theory, woodwind, strings and voice. The school is now embarking on a new initiative and developing the children s appreciation of the The Arts in general through the Artsaward national scheme. Schemes of Work The schemes of work are currently under review, but make use of resources drawn from Cheranga, Voices Foundation, Music Express, the LCP programme for music as well as BBC music workshops. These schemes and resources are intended to provide a broad and balanced curriculum and ensure coverage of the National Curriculum objectives. To supplement our classroom work and attendance of live concerts, opportunities will be explored to buy in workshops to introduce the children to a range of genres and instruments. Music And ICT There are currently a number of keyboards (updated with a grant from EMI 2009) available to be used within the classrooms, which are located in the KS2 resource cupboard. It is expected that class teachers will include these in their teaching. Children are encouraged to explore the sound effects and rhythms to express their own compositional work. A number of CD ROMs are available to enhance pitch and rhythm. 2Simple and Black Cat compose are also available on the laptops. It is hoped that music can be developed further through ICT. The Vocal Resources: Singing Sherlock and Voiceworks are now available throughout the whole school. Other music software that is freely available includes Audacity and Vanbasco. Throughout school there are CD players that are available, courtesy of the Millipedes (now the PTFA), which should be used to enhance music education of the children. A purchase of a recordable CD Coomber, with funding from EMI, also provides further Music and ICT opportunities. Resources Currently there is a range of tuned and untuned percussion instruments located in two areas. The central music store houses the keyboards, and a range of large tuned and untuned instruments. The KS1 music trolley provides basic percussion instruments, but is supplemented by percussion boxes that are specific to the age range; these are stored in either the main music store or the year 1/2 wing. Whenever possible, new instruments will be purchased; this will provide new experiences for the children and replace existing instruments that have become damaged over time.
