NEON SUBWAY MAP (All images can be found at FIGURE 1 Lemongraphic Subway Map This infographic is an experiment with data visualization. The artist is combining ten subway routes into one sitemap. There is a lot of information presented on this map such as location, time, and other resources. Here, I will analyze each part of the infographic as to how it contributes to the overall utilization by the user.

Layer 1 The Background The Horizontal/Vertical Coordinates See FIGURE 2 FIGURE 2 Horizontal/Vertical Coordinates Here is where one of the smaller background paths begins One of the functions of a line is to act as a connection or pointer from one object to another (or from an object to its label) (p.43). The coordinate grid in this first layer is intended to act as an indicator of location; however, there is no legend that directs the user from the coordinates (label) to the location (object). The only way the user can utilize this feature is if he is talking to someone else who is looking at the same map (i.e. The guy says to his friend: No man, let s meet at Station X because Station Y is all the way across town. Station X is D-04 on the sitemap. ). In other words, the use of lines in the coordinates only acts as a reference feature. This feature lacks second and third generation labeling (p.59). For better utilization, the map should provide an alphabetical list of locations and their corresponding coordinates. This is where one of the larger background paths begins FIGURE 3 Multi-Size Background Paths

Multi-Size Grey Background Paths See FIGURE 3 There are multi-size grey paths in the background layer that are unspecified. They begin at the edges of the map and intertwine with the subway routes in the middle. Because there is no label, it is assumed they are only intended for visual appeal. Throughout this graphic, lines are used to signify routes, roads, and stops they are used to designate information, so these background paths are confusing for the user. Also, the infographic is already visually appealing due to the use of neon colors on the second layer, so these paths are only making the information seem cluttered. Layer 2 Route Information Subway Lines and Stops/Destinations Most map drawings consist of roads made from three lines that represent one line/path. Katz states that this makes our eyes and brain do extra work to determine which is the figure and which is the ground, and to discern one road or path from another (p.43). As discussed above, the grey paths in the background confuse the user; however, the single thick lines on the second layer are easily discernible. There is a strategic use of color that makes each path distinguishable despite the plethora of information the colors function to break down communication barriers that might otherwise exist because of the multiple lines used on the map. Katz also claims that the user remembers colors depending on contextual variables like brightness, temperature, and movement. The use of bright neon colors against a black background proves to be visually appealing and helps the user remember and distinguish each subway line. Not to mention, 8 of the 11 colors used are already embedded in the user s memory from childhood; therefore, they are easy to visualize even when not standing in front of the map (p.52). The colors are also effective because they are not overused; for example, it was a strategic choice for the multiple stops to be written in grayscale even though they belong to each subway line. The stops are easily readable and the end/beginning of each subway circuit is clear. Lemongraphic Summary Legend See FIGURE 4 The Lemongraphic Summary Legend on the right-hand side of the sitemap. It achieves first, second, and third generation labeling. The objects are appropriately connected to their label through the use of color and numeric

labeling. This legend allows fast navigation because it provides all the necessary information concerning station, location, time duration, and subway line; however, some assumptions must be made when reading this legend. For example, the way time duration is displayed requires the user to assume that it means from the beginning number to the ending number. FIGURE 4 Lemongraphic Subway Legend FIGURE 5 Small Subway Legend Small Subway Legend See FIGURE 5 Because this legend is referring to the information provided on layer 2, it is unclear why they author chose to make it monochrome. (The paths in layer 1 of the background are monochrome and grey, but this legend is not intended for that.) Also, some of the things listed in the legend cannot be found on the map at all. Do they exist, or are they overlooked because of ineffective labeling? It is hard to make the connection between the object and its label, thus slowing down the utilization of information.

Reasons for Revision I decided to keep the original graphic, but my analysis is completely new. This is because my original project merely provided a starting point for analysis; it did not include enough of the concepts from Designing Information. In the revision, I attempted to look deeper into each part of the sitemap and analyze it based on how the information is presented and utilized. I feel that this revision is more visually appealing as well as more thorough as compared to the first submission.
