O Dea Core Knowledge Elementary October 2015 Newsletter Dear Families, Happy October! I cannot believe that September is already at a close and we are embarking upon October! The year is already clicking right along and the children have the groove of our school day down. It has been exciting to see them settle into the school year and become part of our owl family again. We love our kindergartners who enter each year and bring such enthusiasm and ENERGY into our building! It is also wonderful to see our older students really showing their maturity, wisdom and O Dea Core Knowledge pride throughout the school day. Our fifth grade ECO week adventure in the mountains was simply amazing and we hosted the very best weather that we could ever hope for. Our students lived learned loved nature and created some amazing memories that will last forever. We are so thankful and grateful that our students have the opportunity to attend such an amazing event. A special thank you goes out to our fifth grade team who prepares so diligently for this trip. We have been busy with our MAP computerized assessments in reading and math for our second through fifth graders and are looking forward to sharing those results with you during our upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences in October. These assessments show us where the children are performing in accordance to our state standards and help us target our instruction to meet their specific needs. At O Dea we do expect 100% of parent attendance at conferences. It is simply such an important time to spend together. Thank you to all the family members who attended our first PTA dessert social last month! It was great to see so many familiar faces and some new ones as well. We continue to encourage families to join our group and to be a part of the collective voice of parents. We want to create a strong partnership between the school and our families so your attendance is greatly needed and appreciated. Our Walkathon fundraiser launched this week! You should have received information packets in your child s backpack that will explain what our Walkathon is and how to support O Dea. We have added the ability to create an online donation page this year that should assist families in reaching out to an extended community. This will be our primary fundraiser each year and helps us run many important and valuable schoolwide activities and provides materials for our students. We are very thankful for your support! I hope that you enjoy this wonderful fall season with your families and friends. Thank you for your continued support of our school we simply could not do it without you. Thinking of leaves falling, shorter days and hoping for a snowy winter, Laurie

Box tops! If you see a box top save a box top and send it to school to purchase books! Each year we collect thousands of box tops to purchase books for our library and literacy program at O Dea Core Knowledge. That little square goes a long way at our school and we appreciate you collecting them and sending them in! There are lives I can imagine without children but none of them have the same laughter & noise (storypeople) Help us celebrate National Walk and Bike to School Day on Wednesday, October 7 th! It will be a fun day across our nation that children and families are focusing on using our feet or our bikes to get to school! Join in on the fun and place your child s name in a raffle to win fun prizes! It will be good for our health and great for our environment! Music News: Choir is Singin every Monday after school until 4:30 (3 rd -5 th ) Modern Band is Rockin Every Thursday after school until 4:30 (4 th & 5 th only) Our O Dea choir will be singing at the Eagles game on Wednesday, November 18 th at 7:00! Be sure to join us for some fun Eagles and Owls fun! If you want to sing out, sing out and if you want to be free, be free!

Parent Teacher Conferences: Time has been passing quickly and it is time for our first round of Parent Teacher conferences! This is a wonderful opportunity for our families and our teachers to come together to talk about the progress of our children. Keep an eye out for the sign up sheets coming home in the upcoming weeks! A few tips for families for a great conference are listed below! Tips for families: 1. Prepare ahead of time for the conference. Please note that we do expect one hundred percent parent contact for conferences. It is very important that we build that parent connection and we look forward to your support! 2. Look over recent assignments and test grades so that you know how your child has been performing in class. Look through books and see what your child is learning. 3. Ask your child questions, such as what is their favorite subject, what are they having a difficult time with, what subject do they find easiest, and who are their friends at school. 4. Write down questions you have for the teacher so you will remember what you wanted to ask. 5. Be on time for the conference, most are tightly scheduled. Being even 5 minutes late will substantially cut down on the time you have with the teacher. 6. Be open to suggestions from the teacher. Ask what you can do at home to help your child be more prepared for school. 7. Offer suggestions and insights into your child. You know your child best and you may be able to offer information that will help the teacher to better help your child succeed. 8. Ask about social interactions as well as academic. Children struggling with friendships can suffer from low self esteem which can cause additional problems in school. We are looking forward to seeing you!

October Nurse Newsletter Happy Thoughts from the Health Office Vision and Hearing screening day is October 19 th. Immunizations must be on file by November 2 nd. Remember students must be fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medications before returning to school. Attendance Line Reminder Thank you so much for calling the attendance line when your child is going to be out. We miss them and worry about them whenever they are not here! Attendance Line is (970) What a fantastic growing season we had! We were able to harvest radishes, carrots, peas, tomatoes, summer squash and many other veggies and still have pumpkins, winter squash onions and peas yet to gather. Thank you to all our wonderful students, teachers and volunteers who got their hands dirty. We have been able to support our club with two bake sales, through which we were able to buy equipment for our garden endeavors. We have also sponsored a lunch-recess program we call Dig it which has given children extra opportunities to help in the garden. Add to that our fantastic salsa/harvest party -- we have had a great year! Keep an eye out for garden digging and tending to the soil to begin next spring! Garden Club activities are open to all students and their families. If you would like to be included on the list please Jamie Bailey:

What we do: O'Dea Parent Teacher Association is an organization working toward supporting the students, staff and programs of the O'Dea Core Knowledge Elementary. Some of the things we support are: Mini-Grants - requests that teachers make to improve the school and their classrooms. Back to School events - we host social events prior to school to help children and families transition from summer to school and to get everyone excited! Community dinners - each semester we organize a dinner for the O'Dea Community. Get to know your other O'Dea families at this annual event. The fall dinner coincides with the Scholastic Book Fair and the spring dinner coincides with the Core Knowledge Fair. Winter Clothes Exchange - provides the O'Dea community an opportunity to drop off, pick up, or swap winter clothing for their children during the fall dinner. Walking Wheeling Wednesdays - offers incentives and rewards for students who get themselves to school without an automobile. Eco-Week - 5th grade experiential education outing Odyssey of the Mind - spring afterschool program that teaches children creative thinking and team work Teacher Appreciation Week - this annual spring event allows up to show our teachers how much we appreciate what they do all year. Volunteer coordination - the school's Volunteer Building Coordinator is also active in PTA! this relationship helps up ensure volunteer needs are being met (Hearing and Vision, Book Fair, Field Day, Pinwheels for Peace, Walk-a-thon, and others) Other things we want to work on...but we need your help! More robust recycling program throughout school Capital improvements like more benches on school grounds, repainting bike stands, repainting the colored square on the building, or new murals in the library. Any other parent or community initiatives. Let us know what is important to you!
