1 HUMC YOUTH GROUP 6TH GRADE - 12TH GRADE Hallsville United Methodist Church November 2015 Newsletter Attention families of high school and middle school youth! As we move forward with our youth program at HUMC, I just wanted to make everyone aware of exactly where we are moving to. We will continue to meet every week from 5-7 on Sunday nights. Every Sunday we will play games (outside when the weather allows), talk about life, and learn about God and his plans for us. Starting on 10/25 we will be beginning a study on Francis Chan's fantastic and best selling book: Crazy Love. Crazy Love talks about us transforming our lives from simply believing in God, to truly trusting Him and wanting Him to influence every part of our lives. This study will be part video, and part discussion. So, HUMC youth, if you want to have fun and hang out with other great youth, come out every Sunday and we will do just that! 2 Going on a Mission Together The other day my family and I went on a walk together. We have a beautiful, cocker spaniel that loves to dart after squirrels and dislocate our arms on these walks as well. We have a route that we take around our neighborhood. There s a nice neighborhood not far from our place that is outside of the city limits. There are several ponds in that area and one of the ponds has a swan on it which is pretty cool. So, we enjoy our conversation and the scenery but the goal is to get out and get some exercise. Church means a lot of things to a lot of different people. There are many benefits to being a part of a church that we all enjoy. We have an incredible church facility that provides a warm and inviting place for us to meet and worship together. However, our mission as a church is not the upkeep of the church building. As good stewards of what God has supplied us we provide upkeep for our building as it serves the mission of the church. It is a resource and an amazing one at that. This same principle applies to our ministries, staff, budgets, events and groups. All that we do is based around the mission of the church. So what is the mission? As a United Methodist Church our United Methodist Mission Statement is Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We have a reason for making disciples, because we desire the world to be transformed through it. That sounds like a daunting task but consider our allies. We work together with thousands of United Methodist Churches all over the world and we are not exclusive in this Christian task. We join thousands of other churches outside the United Methodist denomination to achieve this mission as well. We are all on a mission together. How are you achieving the mission? Is the mission personal to you? Making disciples doesn t just happen in a highly organized manner like being a Sunday School leader, a small group leader or serving in a ministry area. Making disciples happens when we help other Christians individually grow as people. Sometimes it s taking someone out to lunch or coffee and helping them make faith based and prayer soaked decisions in their relationships, careers and life decisions. It happens when you pray for someone and let them know that you are praying for them. We have opportunities everyday to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The question is are we seriously considering the mission? I heard a quote from a movie the other day that I had to write down. It was from the movie Coach Carter. He s a basketball coach who is trying to encourage young, inner city basketball players to escape the pattern of poverty in their lives. At a critical point in the movie one of his basketball players stands up and inspiringly says to his coach and teammates a quote from Marianne Williamson, Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. I believe this is true for us. Consider our mission. Consider your role in helping us achieve our mission, because you are powerful beyond measure. Pastor Jim Voigt

3 Elvanto- A Resource for Volunteerism at HUMC We have recently begun to use a new resource for volunteerism at HUMC. It s called Elvanto ( for general explanation, for our site). Elvanto is our new, online membership resource. We are able to record contact information for all of our visitor, members and regular attenders of worship. It allows different levels of access to the church based upon individual need. It also allows us to set up a schedule for our growing group of volunteers within the church. There are two ways to utilize Elvanto as a member or regular attender of HUMC. The first is the most basic option for Sunday morning volunteers like Ushers, Greeter, Scripture Readers and all other areas. If we have your correct address, then you should receive an for the position and date you are requested to serve on. At the bottom of the will be two buttons: one to accept the opportunity and one to decline. If you are able to volunteer on the day requested all you have to do is tap accept. If you aren t available then tap decline. This let s me (Pastor Jim) know you are available or unavailable. At that point I can send a request to someone else. That s it! The second option is to create an account with Elvanto. Once you create an account you will be able to access our volunteer site. You will need to create your own login name and password. Now I should warn you that sometimes people have problems with the pc web browser Explorer which comes standard on most pc s. The web browsers Firefox and Chrome seem to work more seamlessly. Once you create your own login name and password you should have access to your homescreen. From here you can see when you are scheduled to volunteer, access a church calendar and access an online, church membership directory. To utilize the directory you have to enter a name. It will not show a full directory of our regular attenders and members without a name. In order to assist those that may not have computers or a four week volunteer schedule is posted over on the Information Kiosk. Some people will be listed as Confirmed or Unconfirmed. If you are listed as Unconfirmed it s because you did not respond to the you should have received (if you have ). Please feel free to or call Pastor Jim to accept or decline if you don t want to dig through your for the original request. Elvanto is a resource to help assist us in giving everyone an opportunity to serve within our church. It s exciting to have a growing group of people who desire to serve the mission of our church. 5 HUMC's total income for September, 2015 was $13,199, and our total expenses were $13,885 for a loss of $685. Year to date for 2015, our total income has been $110,130 and our expenses have been $117,563 for a loss of $7,433. Please note that our operating funds are $4,167 ahead for the year. Typically this difference is more than resolved in December when many of the new church donations come in. See chart below for more details.

6 Celebrate Thanksgiving and God s many blessings by donating food or money to the Food Bank Nov. 7 - Peanut Butter Nov.14 - meat in cans or packages (chicken, tuna, spam etc.) Nov Canned Fruits and vegetables Nov Boxed meals-- such as Mac & Cheese and Hamburger Helper type meals

7 We delivered 18 backpacks full of items for foster kids! We delivered over 90 pairs of shoes to help kids and adults in Nicaragua! We made over $500 for the Festival of Sharing with our BBQ ham food booth! Thanks to everyone who contributed items and/or worked any of these events. It is because of your generosity that we can share God s love with so many people.

8 Hallsville Inter-Church Council Community Thanksgiving Dinner Hallsville Inter-Church Council Community Thanksgiving Dinner Hallsville School Intermediate Commons Hwy 124 west of the post office November 21 from 11-1 pm Free will offering will be accepted There will be deliveries to shut ins, so give us names and addresses in the Hallsville area if you know someone who needs a meal. For some this is their only Thanksgiving meal! Volunteers needed for helping cook the meal, serving the meal, making and serving drinks, etc.

9 Hallsville UMM (Men s Group) wishes to invite all men who seek fellowship, devotion and a little fun to join our group at our monthly meetings on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 7:30 am. New Officers Ron Reedy - President and Larry Hall - Vice President Jerry Cotton - Secretary and Jim Bunton- Treasurer We usually arrive around 7-7:30, cooks arrive a little earlier, and two of the men (teams) cook breakfast of their choice. Each team cooks about twice a year depending on number of men in group. We are growing. Breakfast is great, usually includes Biscuits and Gravy because Russell won t come if we do not have them. Breakfast is always good regardless of who is cooking. So a normal meeting would consist of: Arrive between 7:15 and 7:30. 7:30 Opening Prayer by a member (volunteer) After opening prayer Breakfast is served AM General meeting which consists of: Fun---We have a great group of men who all relate well and have varying humors from dry to ridiculous (usually Me) but we do have a very sociable group, not to serious but serious enough. Minutes report Treasure report Old Business Discussion---any old business pending from last meeting. New Business Discussion---any new business related to church activities, upcoming events, or Scouts which the men s group Charters (supports). Devotional Time: Devotional is done by a different member each month on a volunteer basis. Some are not comfortable with it so we ask those who are to give it. The topic of the devotional is at the discretion of the individual giving it and always varies. Sometimes Bible related and some times, current event related but always interesting. Closing Prayer, usually by person doing devotional.

10 WRITING IN THE MARGINS is a new group for ages 6th grade - 99 years old. We will create an art project directly onto the pages of your Bible! Each time we meet we will have a short Bible Study then learn new ideas for taking sermon notes, Bible Study, writing questions and notes to yourself. You do not need to buy a new Bible. 12 SS Class led by Mike and Cathy Hight This SS Class meets in the fellowship hall, Sunday mornings at 9:15. The group is open to any and all interested. We plan to begin with the Book, Invitation by Brian D. Russell. "Onebook's Invitation, taught by Dr. Brian Russell, a professor of biblical interpretation at Asbury Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida, offers a gracious entry into the world and story of the Bible. The ten-week journey involves five short readings per week followed by a thirty-minute video teaching session." Ron and Nancy Rold lead a small class that is concentrating on reading through the Bible. It is basically for adults, although teens could certainly join in. It is for both men and women. We start at the normal Sunday School time of 9:30 am. We have thus far read through John, Luke, Acts, and Mark in the NT, and Genesis through 1 & 2nd Samuel in the OT. We have just started 1st Kings. They are on lesson 6 out of 10. This class will continue at least through the end of the year.
