2 U6 vs. U8 Training Sessions U6 45 minutes once a week. Many activities short in duration, mostly individual-type games. U8 1 hour, one or two times a week. Many activities short in duration, involving groups of two. Truths about Children and Sports Fun is pivotal. If it s not fun, young people won t play a sport. Skill development is a crucial aspect of fun. It is more important than winning, even among the best athletes. The most rewarding challenges of sports are those that lead to self-knowledge. Intrinsic rewards (self-knowledge that grows out of self-competition) are more important in creating lifetime athletes than are extrinsic rewards (victory or attention from others). Nature of a Training Session Upbeat Encouraging Stimulating Many short water breaks Very little explanation, with short demonstrations. Lots of player participation; every player has a ball. The Training Session Players should have a good time during the training session. Players should spend the majority of their time with technical development. Players should touch the ball as much as possible. Page 2

4 U6 - DRIBBLE Each player with a ball in a designated area. Players are directed to dribble. Patience is exercised with players who do not move, or do not understand what dribble means. After a while, players who are not dribbling are encouraged to watch other players dribble and then copy their actions. Players will dribble outside of the circle. Gently remind them to come back into the circle. Upon the command stop, players place their foot on top of the ball. Upon achieving some success, players are directed to stop the ball with their elbow twice (e.g. dribble, stop, dribble, stop ). Then ask a player to choose a different body part with which to stop the ball. If, for example the knee is chosen, repeat the command dribble, and then stop the ball with your knee. Select a different player each time. Caution: The players should not stop the ball with their head due to possible collisions. Balance. Coordination. Keeping the ball close and under control. Coaching Questions How can we stop the ball quicker when asked? Page 4

5 U6 - The River Set up a river using cones. Each player will need a ball. Each player stands on the bank of the river with the ball. Upon the command Go!, each one strikes their ball across the river, past the other bank. Upon striking the ball, players are instructed to follow the coach around the river. There are alligators in the river!!! Don t go through the river. Players then retrieve their ball and line up on the opposite line. The process repeats. After striking the ball several times, players are asked, Can you kick the ball farther if you stand next to it or if you run up to the ball? Regardless of their responses, players are moved back from the ball. Upon the command Go!, they run and kick the ball. After running and striking the ball a few times, players are asked, Can you kick the ball farther with your laces or your toe? Ask the players to strike the ball with their laces. Ultimately, players should be running up to the ball and striking it with their laces. Caution: Allowing players to run through the river is not advised. A player might run through the river and get struck from behind by another player s ball. s Striking the ball with the side of the foot. Who can stop the ball closest to the River Bank? Proper striking technique (toe down, laces, ankle locked, non-kicking foot, etc.) Page 5

6 U6 - Driving School Each player with a ball in 30x30 yard grid. Players start dribbling when the coach yells Green Light and stops the ball with the bottom of their foot when the coach yells Red Light. Introduce Yellow Light, which indicates that everyone dribbles in slow motion. After the players get the basics, it s time to learn how to park. Place cones throughout the grid equal to the number of players. When you shout Park Your Car, players must quickly find an open cone, i.e. an open parking spot (1 car to a spot). Slowly reduce the number of parking spots by 1 cone, then 2 cones to add to the challenge. Those that can t find a spot have to keep driving. Also, start combining the red light, green light, and parking commands and add in variations as needed. Make it fun. Have them rev their engines and honk at other cars to add to the excitement. s Fill the car with gas by finding a gas station and pump the gas. e.g., toe taps, etc. Turn on windshield wipers. i.e., ball in between feet. Dribble around the coach, other objects and then park your car. Coach acts as police officer handing out tickets to speeders (tagging a player is a speeding ticket - kids love this; watch them try to speed away!) Ticket penalty - Walley Jumps. Let players be the police officer. Use colored bibs instead of yelling the colors to make sure the players have their heads up while dribbling. Dribbling under close control. Promotes quick reaction time and balance. Decision making, anticipation, listening for verbal cues. Page 6

7 U6 - FREEZE TAG Each player with a ball dribbles in a grid. One player without a ball is it - aka The Ice Monster. When players with the ball get tagged by The Ice Monster, players stop and hold their ball overhead with open stance (feet apart). Teammates restore a frozen player by passing the ball through their frozen teammate s legs. The objective is for The Ice Monster to freeze everyone, at which point we pick a new Ice Monster and play again. The objective for dribbling is to keep the game alive by continually unfreezing people. Feel free to add another Ice Monster if he/she is having difficulty freezing everyone. Dribbling, quickness with the ball, heads up. High activity, quick reactions required. Team cooperation, high level of communication. Page 7

8 U6 - Tail Tag All players with a ball in a determined area. Players tuck a t-shirt or a scrimmage vest in the back of their shorts. On the signal, the players see how many tails they can gather. If you lose your tail you continue to play. Play for seconds. The player with the most tails wins the round. If the rounds go too quickly, you may add another tail to each player. Can play game with or without balls. Changing direction, balance, quickness. Decision making. Page 8

9 U6 - STAR WARS POD RACE Set up a 10x20 grid. Have all players line up at one end with a ball and prepare to dribble to the other end. The coach stands just outside the sideline towards the middle of the grid with several space balls ready. On command the players attempt to run to the endline while evading space balls kicked at them by the coach. All shots should be kept below waist level. Players whose pods are hit by the space balls become new shooters. Last pod remaining wins the race. Coach can stand in the middle of the area and use a stack of cones, i.e., Space Cones, to throw at the oncoming pods. Dribbling and passing, trying to hit a movng target. Looking for players, chasing, tracking, playing to a target. Allows all ability levels to play equally. Allows each player to be successful. If players are hit early, they can work on their passing/shooting. If they avoid getting hit until the end, their challenge greatly increases. Page 9

10 U6 - RACK EM Divide players into two teams. Have teams opposite each other on ends of small-sided field. Place 8-10 balls spread out at half-line. On the coach s signal, both teams should rush for the balls and try to get as many as possible back into their own goal. This will create many 1v1 and 2v1 real game situations, as well as dribbling and finishing. Once all of the balls are in the goals (each goal = 1 point) the winning team shouts Rack Em. The balls are then reset and we play again. (More balls set up at the start will equate to more individual efforts, while less balls will force more 2v1 and 1v1 situations - try it both ways and see what works best for your needs). As coach, hold onto a different colored ball or one that stands out, and make it worth multiple points. Throw this ball into an open space towards the end of the game. This is a great variation if one team is dominating. It keeps it exciting if other team can score the money ball. Dribbling, passing, finishing, defense Attacking and defensive pressure. Decision making, teamwork. 1v1, 2v1, 2v2, real game situations. Page 10

11 U6 - GATES Set up several cone gates within an area. Each player will need a ball. Players dribble through The gates of the kingdoms of gold, zinc, copper, nickel, silver, bronze, tin, brass and aluminum. Intially, they are to dribble through all the gates. s Ask the players to dribble through the gates at different speeds, fast, slow, fast. Challenge the players to dribble through as many gates as they can in 30 seconds. Players are asked to dribble through more gates than their previous attempt. Go for several rounds keeping track of score. Coaching Questions Rather than ask, Who got the most?, they can be asked if they went through more gates than in their previous attempt. There is value in competing against yourself and improving. How can you dribble through more gates? Page 11

12 U6 - Number Soccer Set up a 20x25 yard field. Establish two teams. Give each player on each team a number (1-6). The coach will call a number or multiple numbers. The players with the corresponding numbers will take the field and play. When a goal is scored or the ball goes out of bounds, the players will return to their teams and the coach will call a new number or numbers. Coach can restart play to a certain team or player to ensure chance of success. May play 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, etc. Page 12

13 U6-3v3 Game Set up a 30x25 yard area with goals on each end. Within the area, establish 3 players on 2 seperate teams. A pile of balls will be situated on the sideline next to the coach. The players will play a 3v3 match to goals. When the ball goes out of bounds, the coach will put another ball into play. Coach can serve the ball to the team that is not winning, or to a less-involved player when the ball goes out of play. This will ensure a chance for involvement and success for all players. Page 13

15 U8 - Dribble Each player with a ball in a designated area. Players dribble in the designated area. They are encouraged to use the entire area, different speeds and changes of direction. While dribbling, upon the command, Change, players stop their ball, then quickly go get another ball. They continue dribbling. Coaching Questions Are you dribbling like you would in a game? Should you dribble slow or at game speed? Can you use the whole area? Page 15

16 U8 - Gates (Lava Pits) Set up several small cone goals lava pits in a designated area. Each player will need a partner and a ball per pair. In their pairs, players pass the ball to their partner through the lava pits. Once the players understand the activity, they are asked to count the number of lava pits through which each pair passes for 30 seconds. Play several rounds, keeping track of scores in each round. Coaching Questions How can you pass through more pits within the time limit? Did you improve upon their own previous number? Would you step through a real lava pit? Page 16

17 U8 - Ball Master Players find a partner with one ball between them. Pairs take turns handing their ball to the coach. The coach provides the pair with some directions, then serves the ball. Each pair must return the ball to the coach fulfilling the directions given. Examples: Bring the ball back with 2 heads and 1 hand. Bring the ball back with 2 backs and 2 hands. Bring the ball back with 1 elbow, 1 shoulder and 2 hands. The coach can move around, so that players must look up to see where the coach is now standing. 2 players run out and collect the ball and have to make a designated number of passes before passing back to the coach. The challange can be increased by designating a higher number of passes. Players, in pairs, must solve the challenges provided, not other players, nor parents. Coaching Questions How could you get the ball back faster? Page 17

18 U8 - Endline Soccer Set up a 30x25 yard area with goals on each end. Within the area establish 3 players on 2 seperate teams. A pile of balls will be situated on the sideline next to the coach. The players will play a 3v3 match to the endline. A player must dribble across the endline to score. When the ball goes out of bounds, the coach will put another ball into play. Coach can serve the ball to the team that is not winning, or to a less-involved player when the ball goes out of play. This will ensure a chance for involvement and success for all players. Page 18

19 U8 - Outta Here Set up a 20x25 yard field. Establish a 3v3 matchup with teammates in each corner. The coach has a collection of soccer balls on the touchline. Players, therefore, do not chase a ball out of bounds. 3v3 soccer. When a team scores, they stay on the field. The players who were scored on must leave the field. Their teammates, in the corner, take the field and continue play. Players in the corner should rush onto the field. When the ball goes out of bounds, both teams leave the field. Both sets of players in the corners continue play. Coach can restart play to a certain team or player to ensure chance of success. May play 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 etc. Page 19

20 U8 - Shadow Dribble Create groups of 2. 1 ball per pair. Player with the ball follows the player without the ball and attempts to stay within partner s shadow. At the end of a 30 second interval, players switch roles. Player without a ball attempts to stay within the dribbling player s shadow. Encourage changing directions and speeds. Ball control, expanded field vision following player. Coaching Questions What can you do to stay in the shadow? How can you lose the player in your shadow? Page 20

21 U8 - Team Knockout Create two even numbered teams and a 30x30 yard grid. Team A is on the field, and each player has a ball. Team B stands anywhere along the sidelines without a ball. On the signal, Team B runs onto the field and attempts to kick all the balls off the field. The coach starts the clock on the signal and stops it when the last ball is kicked off the field. Team A members who have had their ball kicked off the field help other team members by getting into positions so that they may receive a pass. Remember, time does not stop until Team B kicks all the balls off the field. Count aloud when there is only 1 or 2 balls left, not only to add to the excitement, but to get them playing hard. The fastest time after each round wins or first team to win 3 rounds - losing team sizzles like bacon. Have the winning team provide the sizzle sounds effects. Awareness, expands peripheral vision. Keep your up - be aware of other players. Dribbling, changing direction and speed - no standing allowed, keep ball under control. Play the ball, not their legs. Teamwork, communication, passing to targets. Shielding, using body to protect the ball. Page 21

22 U8 - Death on the Nile Form a 10x30 yard grid. 3 teams of 3 players. Each team gets 1 minute in the middle (the river) as alligators. Other 2 teams have to try and pass balls across the river back and forth. Which team of gators gobbles up the most balls? Make playing area wide enough to provide open spaces to knock the ball through. Play 1 minute rounds with teams rotating - the team to gobble the most balls as gators in the middle wins the round. Passing through open space to targets. Teamwork, communication, ball movement. Defensive anticipation as gators! Usage of space. Passing to a teammate on same side of the river to open channels. Communication Page 22

23 U8 - Haves And Have Nots Layout a circle area, with 3 players located at the center of the circle who do not have a ball. The remaining players are dribbling inside the edge of the circle. Upon the command Go, the three Have Nots, attempt to tackle the ball from the Haves. Play continues with dribbling and dispossessing dribblers. Once the Have Nots win the ball, they clear it out of the area. Now the Have is also a Have Not. Once the Have Nots win the ball they possess it and become a Have. Keep the ball close and under control Change of speed/direction Coaching Questions How do you keep from becoming a Have Not? Page 23

24 U8 - Tag With Bibs Each player has a ball in a desginated area. Three players hold a bib in their hand, the other players do not have a bib. Players with a bib ( taggers ) attempt to tag other players. Once a player is tagged, the tagger throws the bib down and the player that got tagged picks up the bib and is now a tagger. Can play with or without a ball Keep ball undercontrol Change of speed/direction Coaching Questions How can you keep from getting tagged? What can you do to tag people quicker? Page 24
