3 International Polar Year: A Rich History International Polar Year builds on a rich history of collaboration and innovation International Polar Year, International Polar Year, International Geophysical Year, From the first estimates of the size of Antarctic to the launch of the world s first satellites, polar year programs have changed the world and our understanding of it 3

12 Keynote Speakers Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland: Special Envoy on Climate Change for the United Nations Secretary General, Dr. Brundtland is also the former Prime Minister of Norway and Director-General of the World Health Organization. Mr. Aqqaluk Lynge: Member of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and Chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC), Mr. Lynge has promoted the rights of Indigenous Peoples both globally and in his home country of Greenland since his youth. Dr. Sheila Jasanoff: She is Pforzheimer Professor of Science and Technology Studies and Director of the Program on Science, Technology and Society at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge, Massachusetts. 12
13 Keynote Speakers Dr. Louis Fortier: His work has helped place Canada at the forefront of research on the impacts of climate change in the Arctic. ArcticNet, Canada's first network of centres of excellence focused on the Arctic, was created in 2003 under his leadership as Scientific Director. Dr. José Xavier: A marine biologist with the Institute of Marine Research, University of Coimbra, Portugal, and the British Antarctic Survey, Dr. Xavier has been recognized both for his contributions to Antarctic policy, as well as education and outreach. Dr. Xavier has been awarded the prestigious 2011 Martha T. Muse Prize for Science and Policy in Antarctica. 13
14 IPY Montreal: Conference Details Area chairs and their committees met last week in Montreal to define the Conference program International Steering Committee (ISC) also met and approved the structure Work on Areas 3 and 4 continuing: aim is to include more private sector participants Plenary panels (afternoons) being finalized 14
