BCU Lifeguards Delivery of First Aid at Work Courses Following on from a number of queries regarding HSE approval of Aquatic First Aid courses, we have spent a number of months looking into the possibilities of enabling current AFA Coaches to deliver HSE approved FAW courses in conjunction with Aquatic First Aid. We are pleased to announce that through a partnership with an existing First Aid awarding body, this is something we are now able to move forward with. However, before we do, we feel it s important that our current trainers are 100% clear about the implications of this, and the requirements imposed upon them to be able to deliver HSE approved FA courses. Scope Initially we are looking to be able to award Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificates in conjunction with AFA L1 Courses. This is an equivalent 8hr award, where the syllabi match up sufficiently. Upon successful implementation of EFAW, we will in time look to be able to also offer the 3 day First Aid at Work (FAW) courses, both for new candidates & as re-validations. Requirements Due to their very nature, the running of EFAW & FAW courses come with a far greater level of admin, audit & procedure compared to what you will be used to with AFA. Initial Registration We need to submit a portfolio to the awarding body/hse of each trainer that we wish to approve to deliver EFAW courses through the BCU Lifeguards. These are the official HSE Requirements for FAW Trainers: All trainers should have the skills to teach and be able to demonstrate first aid knowledge and experience. Each trainer must submit a personal portfolio (photocopies of certificates should be included) which contains: 1. A current and valid: First Aid at Work certificate; OR NMC or a GMC Certificate with evidence of current first aid knowledge; OR HPC registered Paramedic Certificate. 2. A formal teaching or training qualification (see table below). 3. A chronological list of training delivered that shows the trainer has regularly provided First Aid at Work training during the previous three years. Please enclose copies of any verification records within the last 3 years (records of any teaching sessions verified or assessed by another qualified trainer/assessor). Note. If the trainer has delivered less than 6 FAW or FAW requalification courses in the previous 3 years,
evidence of other first aid training experience is required. You should enclose copies of any verification records within the last 3 years (records of any teaching sessions verified or assessed by another qualified trainer/assessor). Recognised Teaching Qualifications Further Adult Education Teachers Certificate B.Ed / M.Ed PGCE / PCET / Cert Ed NVQ Level 3 in training & development NVQ Level 4 in training & development PTLLS / CTLLS / DTLLS City & Guilds 7303 Skills Trainer Vocational Trainer Workplace Trainer Direct Trainer IHCD Instructional methods IHCD Instructor certificate First Aid at Work Lay Instructor Certificate BCU UKCC Coach Educator* BCU UKCC Coach Assessor* * We are still awaiting final confirmation that these will be recognised by the HSE, however, our initial discussions suggest that they will be without any problems. If you feel you have a qualification that may fit into the Vocational Trainer / Workplace Trainer / Skills Trainer / Direct Trainer categories above, a copy of this certificate will need to be provided to use to seek approval from the HSE. Additionally, if you hold a teaching qualification that isn t listed above but feel may be suitable, please submit a copy of this to us so we can seek clarification from the HSE. Unfortunately, currently no other BCU UKCC (or otherwise) coaching awards are being accepted as recognised teaching awards by the HSE. If you don t hold a recognised teaching award then please see the diagram below to find out how you can still become an FAW Trainer.
What do I need to do to become an HSE Trainer with the BCU Lifeguards? AFA L1 or L2 Coach - FAW Certificate; OR - NMC or a GMC Certificate with evidence of current first aid knowledge; OR - HPC registered Paramedic Certificate. Recognised Teaching Qualification (See list above) Yes No Already deliver FAW Courses with another Training Centre? Attend Fast Track Training & Assessment Course (See details below) Yes No Provide details of training delivered within last 3 years, along with copies of any verification records. Undergo a half day assessment whereby you are observed delivering 2 practical & 2 theory sessions. (Thi s coul d be ca rri ed out on one of your exi s ti ng AFA Cours es.)
Fast Track Training & Assessment Course This course is specifically designed to enable people who are already competent trainers (and who hold a first aid at work certificate) to teach first aid at work. To teach or assess first aid at work, you must have on file two competent theory and two competent practical teaching and assessing sessions, delivered under the supervision of a qualified trainer. The fast track course enables candidates to deliver these sessions and also helps to iron out any errors in subject matter that the trainer may be inadvertently teaching. After successful completion, the delegate would be qualified to teach and assess first aid at work. This is a PTLLS course (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) which is a nationally recognised teaching award. Satisfactory completion of this course does also allow you to assess First Aid at Work. Whilst assessors are NOT required for EFAW courses, they are for FAW courses and so when we do look to roll out the full 3 day FAW course, you will be able to both train and assess these without having to do anything further. There are a number of these courses that you are able to book onto individually. They cost approx. 425 per person. If there is sufficient interest, BCU Lifeguards may be able to organise a number of these courses at a discounted price (approx per person). If you would be interested in this please let us know on the survey and state where you are based. Half Day Assessment This is required to validate your teaching ability for the purposes of the HSE and to ensure any subject matter errors are ironed out. This assessment needs to be carried out by a FAW Assessor which can be organised via the N ational Team. This assessment is likely to be charged for, however, this is something for you to discuss directly with the assessor. We will try to sign post you towards the most local assessor to you. It is envisaged that this assessment will be carried o ut on you next scheduled AFA course and successful completion would qualify you as a FAW Trainer with the BCU Lifeguards, subject to the submission of your portfolio to the HSE. It is possible for two AFA Coaches to be assessed in one day, providing they a re both observed delivering two theory & two practical sessions during the day. This may involve splitting the group for some aspects of the course but this can be discussed in more detail with the assessor.
What is EFAW (Emergency First Aid at Work)? EFAW is a first aid course with a minimum of 6 hours of contact time. As it is a legal requirement for workplaces to provide adequate first-aid provision for staff, for many business having EFAW certified staff is sufficient. Although the course is only a minimum of 6 hours, there is scope within the course to cover any additional topics that are relevant/required by the clients. In our case, this would allow for drowning for example, to also be covered during the day. The HSE outlines the following training requirements for EFAW as a mi nimum: On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to: - understand the role of the first-aider including reference to: o the importance of preventing cross infection o the need for recording incidents and actions o use of available equipment - assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency; - administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure); - administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation; - administer first-aid to a casualty who is choking; - administer first-aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding; - administer first-aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock; - provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters). Other Requirements for HSE Trainers Once an approved HSE Trainer with the BCU Lifeguards, we are required to monitor you to ensu re both the quality of your teaching and the level of your technical knowledge. As part of this, the HSE requires you to complete at least two EFAW (or FAW) courses per year, with at least one of them being observed by another trainer/assessor. This observation (or verification as the HSE refer to them) would need to be centrally recorded by us. You would also need to ensure your FAW certificate remains valid. The admin requirements on you post course would not be hugely different to our current procedures for AFA courses. The main key difference is that candidate feedback forms would need to be sent to us so we have them available for audit by the awarding body/hse. Candidate details for certificates & payment would still be handled online via the Trainer s Zone. Costs Whilst we are trying to keep costs as low as possible, there are some costs involved in bot h becoming, and running EFAW courses. There will be an additional charge of between 5-10 per certificate (tbc) on top of the AFA L1 certificate fee. This will include a HSE certificate as well as a plastic credit card style certificate. Due to the amount of administration involved in initially registering trainers with the awarding body/hse, we will also be charging an initial 25 registration fee for anyone wishing to deliver EFAW courses.
Additional Courses Once we have successfully launched EFAW, we are able to potentially offer the following courses to be delivered which may be of interest to you: - First Aid at Work (3 Day) Initial Courses & Refresher Courses - OFSTED approved Paediatric First Aid (Child & Baby) - AED Training Not interested in delivering HSE courses? Put simply, this is absolutely no problem at all. You will be able to continue to deliver AFA Courses as you currently do, and will be completely unaffected by these changes. They are only designed to enhance our current offering to trainers, not replace it. I am interested, what do I do next? At this stage all we are asking for is current AFA Coaches complete the online questionnaire. Once we have this information back we will be able to gauge the level of interest and will be back in touch with details of what you need to do next. We do also welcome you to provide any additional feedback within the questionnaire or ask any questions that you re not quite clear on. We can t guarantee to respond to you individually, but will aim to ensure any areas where there is confusion are covered in our next release of information. The online survey can be completed here:
