2 Phonics for parents with Find your child s level Dear parent, magazine and the Alphablocks Reading Programme It s an exciting time when your child begins to read. All children are different and need to learn at their own pace, gaining confidence as they go. This booklet will you to gain confidence too, so that you can be the best guide for your child. The Alphablocks are all about phonics the teaching system used in schools to children read. Phonics has some simple rules, which this guide can you with. In phonics, every letter makes a sound and these sounds can be used to build and read words. Once you understand phonics, you can really support what your child will learn in school. This guide starts at the very beginning and shows you how and when to introduce new letters, sounds and words. It s supported by your resource pack in part 2. Have fun reading together! Steph Cooper, Editor. What is phonics? Phonics is the teaching programme for reading that is used in almost all schools throughout the UK. It starts with the idea that every letter makes a sound. Children get to know the letter sounds and how to blend them together to make simple words, such as tap. Gradually, more letters and sounds are added, a few at a time. Then letter teams are introduced, and so on, in a careful progression to build reading skills and confidence. High-frequency words As well as learning to read by blending letter sounds, your little one will need to recognise high-frequency words. These common words have to be learned as wholes because the letters are making different sounds. Examples are: the, to, of, for, was, he, she, I. Look out for the high-frequency words poster coming in part 2! Is your child taking a first interest in letters and words? Is your child confident with most letters and with some simple words? Is your child confident with all their letters and sounds, and reading simple words? Does your child know a dozen or more letter teams (digraphs)? 3 Get ready Make sure you know the correct letter sounds. Phonics starts with letter sounds (c cat) rather than letter names ( ABC). The vowels apple or accident echo or egg ink or important The consonants Give each one a short sound and be careful not to put an uh sound on the end as this will get in the way when your child tries to blend sounds. So mmm, not muh and fff not fuh, and so on. Each Alphablock has its own action and personality, to your child remember each sound. Hear all the letter sounds at: bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/ grownups/shows/alphablocks odd or orange Text l uh unfair or unlucky m uh r uh Things to try with your child... Choose a sound of the day and look for things together that start with that sound. Listen for sounds at the ends of words or in the middle. Can your child hear the o in top, or the g in bug? Pair the sounds with actions. For example, rub your tummy like hungry M when you say mmm. About accents... Use your normal accent for reading phonics, but it may be ful to explain to your child that other people (including the Alphablocks) may say words a little differently. Say a sound and ask your child to point to the right Alphablock, or vice versa. Play at being an Alphablock glug juice like G, pop up like P, and catch some zzzs like Z! 4 First steps Words to try In this stage your child learns letters and sounds and begins blending them to make simple words. In the first few weeks of phonics at school, your child will meet the most common letters in an order like this: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, l, ff, ss, ll The first step is to get to know the letters and the sounds they make. Learning to say the sounds of each letter is essential for starting to read. Rrrrr! c - a - t Use the Alphablocks actions to have fun with the letters and your child remember them. For example, R is a pirate who cries rrrr as she swings on a rope. Your poster in part 2 will show all the characters with their actions and sounds. As soon as your child knows some letters well, they are ready to put them together to make and read simple words. When you read words together, point to each letter in turn, say each letter sound, then blend them to read the word. When your child blends the sounds out loud, they will hear a word that they recognise. The first words your child will learn are called CVC words (or consonant-vowel-consonant words). Cat and dog are good examples of CVC words: consonant vowel consonant 6 Use Find your out letter more at tiles and CVC flashcards in part 2! 7 d - o - g There are lots of simple CVC words, but here s a tip avoid words that end in r, w or y. These letters team up with vowels to make new sounds ( car and now) and it s best to leave them for later (see page 10). In this stage, you will also meet the double letters ff, ll and ss, plus ck, who make one sound when they are together. When you sound out a word like duck, say ck as one sound (d-u-ck). cat, bag, ham, fan, pan, cap, bat, hat, rat, tap, pen, red, hen, bed, ten, pet, net, pin, pig, big, lid, lip, bin, dog, dot, nod, top, hop, mud, mug, rug, fun, sun, bus, nut, duck, kick, pick, bell, doll, off, mess, kiss, boss Actions to try... Drum like D! Pop up like P! Tut like T! Munch like M!

5 Next steps This stage is about introducing the remaining letters and making lots of words with them all. At this stage, add in these letters: j, v, w, x, y, z, q, qu Give your child time to become confident with the first steps before moving on. Once they are ready, you can simply begin to add in the new letters, one at a time. Jump like a jolly jaybird! Start by exploring each new letter sound together. For example, look at Alphablock J and think of words like jog, jump and jiggle again, do the actions. Then you re ready to use the letter for some word magic! Once you ve introduced the rest of the letters, have some fun with q and qu. Remember that Alphablock Q only makes words when U is with her. Together they make words like quiz and quack. Quite lovely! It s important that your child is confident with all the letters and with reading CVC words before you move on to the next stage. Take time to really work on the letter sounds and words in this stage and the previous one. S says sss! Words to try jam, jug, jet, jog, jig, van, vet, web, wet, wig, win, will, well, box, fox, ox, six, mix, fix,, yet, yak, zip, zap, zigzag, quit, quiz, quack, quick Actions to try Introduce the new letter by taking a word your child already knows and swapping in the new letter to make something different. For example, make ham and bug, then swap in the letter j to turn the ham into jam and the bug into a jug. becomes Before you continue, it s a good idea to introduce letter names as well as letter sounds. For example, refer to Alphablock S (by saying ess ) as well as using the sss sound (which is more of a hiss). Jump like J! Be quiet like Q. Pretend to weep like W! Zzzz like Z! 6 Letter teams Letters can team up to make new sounds and this unlocks hundreds of new words for your child. This stage is all about: ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, oi, ur, ow, er, air, ure Each single Alphablock makes one sound, but two Alphablocks can team up to make one new sound. C and H can make CH, chip or rich. A and R can make AR, car and far. A team of two letters that makes one sound is called a digraph. These teams can really your child to decipher words that don t follow the simpler patterns. Try this: sound out c-h-i-p with each letter as a single letter sound. It s unrecognisable, but if you sound out ch-i-p it makes much more sense. letter teams. For example, lay out the first two letters of the words ping, ring, bing, wing, sing, then look at the ng letter team together. When they have tried out the new sound, let them put ng on the end of each word and sound it out. Note that the letter team oo can make two different sounds: long, moon, and shorter, book. It s fine to teach both at once, let your child try the word and suggest they try the other oo sound if the one they have tried doesn t make sense. Words to try chip, chop, ship, shop, shed, posh, this, that, thing, think, ring, king, sing, wing, ping, ding, see, bee, tree, seed, reed, feed, book, look, cook, loop, hoop, moon, zoom, zoo, car, far, corn, Introduce the letter teams only once your child has grasped the earlier levels. They will already have met some double letters ff, ss and ll and will just have got to grips with qu, so follow on from that with these new letter teams. This is one of the trickier things to master, so give your child time and them to break down a word into When they are comfortable with digraphs, try to introduce the 3-letter teams (trigraphs) air, igh and ure, and begin to combine digraphs, thing or sheep horn, coin, turn, burn, cow, now, how, fair, hair, pair, pure, letter, ladder, chair, sheep Look Find for out your more digraphs at and flashcards in Part 2!

7 Letter blends Some consonants just love to be together and spotting them can speed up your child s reading. This stage is all about: bl-, br-, cl-, cr-, dr-, fl-, fr-, gl-, gr-, pl-, pr-, sc-, sl-, sm-, sp-, st-, spr-, -lk, -lt, -mp, -nd, -nk, -st, -nts and more When your child is confident with letter teams, it s time for letter blends! While letter teams make new sounds, with blends (sometimes called clusters or consonant blends), letters carry on making their old sounds but we blend them together when we read. For example, if you read step, stop and stag one after the other, you quickly see that the starting sound is the same. You can stop reading the letters s and t individually and blend them into st-. Blends can appear at the end of words too, such as the -nd in hand, sand, land. To practise blends, try looking together at other groups of words, such as flip, flop, flap. Can your child spot which letters are the same each time? Can they hear which sounds are changing and which sounds are staying the same? This is a great way to tune young ears into blends. Look out for blends (and letter teams) in stories and rhymes that you read together, as they often have repeated patterns that you could talk about with your little one. This stage is about longer blends too, such as -nts in ants and pants or str- in string and strip. You will be combining letter blends with letter teams, as in string, which has the blend strand the letter team ng. Your child will be meeting longer words and making lots of new combinations there s a lot to learn in this important stage, so give your child plenty of time to get to grips with it before you move on. Words to try stop, star, best, rest, clog, sled, drum, drag, flag, spring, bring, floor, float, frog, from, glass, glow, glug, plug, crash, black, blink, scan, smell, smash, spoon, spend, spin, hand, sand, pond, send, post, most, wind, cats, spots, ink, link, pink, bump, hump, lump, ants, pants You ll Find out get more letter at tiles to make blends in part 2!

8 Long vowels Magic E and the long vowel sounds are the final keys to the puzzle... almost! This stage is all about: ai, ay, a_e, ee, ea, e_e, igh, ie, i_e, oo, oa, oe, o_e, ew, ue, u_e, wh, ph, au, aw, ir, ou, oy This stage is a big step forward, so it s a good idea to make sure your child is really comfortable with letter teams and letter blends before you start it. When they are ready, they can take on Magic E, who can team up with each of the vowels to form a special letter team. This type of letter team is called a split digraph because another letter can get in between the first vowel and the e. For example, in the picture below, Alphablocks U and Magic E form a split digraph either side of B. Text Magic E turns short vowel sounds (such as the a in can) into long vowel sounds (as in the a in cane). The long vowel sounds sound just like the letter names: a, e, i, o and u (and also oo). There are lots of other long vowel letter team sounds to learn too, which you can introduce as you have introduced others. Try grouping them together into sounds. For example, look at how you can make a long o sound with oa ( boat) and oe (as in toe). You can make a long o sound with o_e, home. At this stage, you can also introduce new sounds for familiar letters. Good examples would be g making a soft sound, cage, or c making a soft sound in ice. The vowels can make long sounds and some new sounds on their own too: o go, e be, a raft, u put, i hi. Give your little one as many reading experiences as you can, with plenty of stories, rhymes and songs. Even everyday challenges, such as street signs and food labels, offer opportunities to meet new words, and your child grow into a confident and independent reader.
