1 Waste Algemene informatie Samenvatting Primary school pupils (9-10 years of age) visit a waste incinerator in Schwandorf (Germany). Before and during this visit the pupils learn about waste, waste reduction, recycling, energy in waste and technical aspects of the incinerator and turbine. The project includes working with computers, for example for finding data regarding the amount of waste produced by the community where the pupils live and for looking in the system of the incinerator to find out how much energy is gained from the waste. It is also set up to be enquiry based, including hands-on activities, for example for learning about different kinds of energy. Where to find the application or case Homepage of the waste incinerator Schwandorf: inhoud inhoud A project is developed to teach children about different kinds of waste, reducing the amount of waste produced and what is done with the waste that cannot be reused. Also, energy and the way electricity is produced will be made clear for the children. The importance for society to deal with the waste problem is made clear as well as the possibilities for changing towards renewable energy. Children look into what kinds of waste can be distinguished and how these kinds of waste should be sorted. They learn what happens with each kind of waste and learn about reducing, reusing and recycling. The rest of the waste that cannot be used in any other way is transported to Schwandorf. Children learn how this waste is collected and transported from their town to Schwandorf. At the waste incinerator in Schwandorf they see the delivery of waste by truck and by train, the dumping of the waste and how it is put in the incinerator by the grab crane.the children learn what energy is, that energy does not disappear but has many forms. They see how the energy in the waste is used for the production of steam, which in turn is used to transform the energy into electricity and warmth for the neighbouring company and town. Finally the children see what is left over of the waste, the slag and the air filtrate. They learn how these leftovers are treated. They see the slag being moved via a conveyer belt and magnetic parts being removed using a huge magnet. Air treatment is not explained in detail, but the children see the air filters and learn that only filtered air leaves the chimneys. During the project children work together in pairs and research different aspects of the project. The project is set up to include different activities including hands-on activities, elearning activities and enquiry based activities. Children learn from each other in

3 small groups and as a class they try to become Müllionär (waste-millionaire) in a quiz. At Schwandorf they see how the waste that cannot be reused is burned and that this waste is turned into warmth and electricity for the neighbouring company and city. Omdat het interdisciplinaire: Steunend op vele academische disciplines en lesmethoden The subject Heimat- und Sachkunde is a kind of sociology for primary school in which children learn about the world they live in. It combines items that can be found in a large range of school subjects such as geology, history, mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry and economy. This is also the case for the project described in this Best Practice. During the project children are involved in many different activities: hands-on experiments, a tour, elearning activities and a group quiz. Relevantie voor het dagelijks leven van studenten In this project children learn what kinds of waste can be distinguished. They also learn how much waste is produced in the town they live, in Germany and all over the world in order to get a perspective of the waste problem. They learn how they themselves can reduce the amount of waste produced. The tour is given by personal at Schwandorf. They have good knowledge about what is going on there and they can answer all questions and point out many interesting facts. 4 At the moment Germany is taking a leading role in energy transition. The goal is to almost completely transfer to renewable energy in Producing energy from waste is a good example for achieving this goal. At Schwandorf the children learn about many aspects involved in energy production, renewable energy and technical aspects involved in the process. Leren door onderzoek en exploratie Children learn how different kinds of waste are recycled. This is done on enquiry basis. For example: How does this plastic bottle turn into a pen?. Also the question what energy is, is answered by enquiry on a candle burning. Versterking van de individuele studenten ICT-hulpmiddelen Children look up information, such as how much waste is produced in the town they live in and how much energy is produced at Schwandorf. Web quests might be included in the project, at school. Ondersteuning van de sociale vaardigheden ontwikkeling A quiz is held at the end of the tour at Schwandorf. Children vote for the correct answer and explain each other why they think it is the correct answer. Further they work together (in pairs) in the hands-on and E-Learning activities. Aanpassingsvermogen van het programma The project can be held at all schools and visiting a waste incinerator might also be done on other locations.

5 This last part can be difficult because the personal at these locations have to be trained to give tours to children.
