3 1. Planning Information A. Effectivity (1) Airframe mounted ice protection system components listed in Table 1 of this Service Letter are affected by this Service Letter. (2) Hartzell Propeller Inc. propellers with de-ice boots or anti-icing boots listed in Table 2 of this Service Letter are affected by this Service Letter. CAUTION: B. Concurrent Requirements DO NOT USE OBSOLETE OR OUTDATED INFORMATION. PERFORM ALL INSPECTIONS OR WORK IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MOST RECENT REVISION OF THIS. INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS MAY BE SIGNIFICANTLY CHANGED FROM EARLIER REVISIONS. USE OF OBSOLETE INFORMATION MAY CREATE AN UNSAFE CONDITION THAT MAY RESULT IN DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, AND/OR SUBSTANTIAL PROPERTY DAMAGE. Reason (1) An aircraft may have de-ice boots, anti-icing boots, or airframe mounted ice protection system components that have been supplied by manufacturers other than Hartzell Propeller Inc. (2) Hartzell Propeller Inc. has developed de-ice boots, anti-icing boots, and airframe mounted ice protection system components. (3) Hartzell Propeller Inc. has obtained FAA approval for installation of airframe mounted ice protection system components onto aircraft approved for use with Hartzell Propeller Inc. propellers. (4) Hartzell Propeller Inc. has obtained FAA approval for installation of de-ice boots and anti-icing boots onto Hartzell Propeller Inc. propellers. 4 (5) The Manager, FAA, Chicago Aircraft Certification Office, ACE 115C, has found compliance with the applicable paragraphs of 14 CFR Part 23 and Part 25 and approves the installation of these components. D. Description (1) This document provides Additional Maintenance Instruction (AMI). (2) This Service Letter introduces airframe mounted ice protection system components manufactured by Hartzell Propeller Inc. When installed on an aircraft approved for use with Hartzell Propeller Inc. propellers, the Hartzell Propeller Inc. components are FAA approved alternates for the currently approved components as shown in Table 1 of this Service Letter. NOTE: Refer to Hartzell Propeller Inc. Application Guide 159 ( ) for approved Hartzell Propeller Inc. propeller installations. (3) This Service Letter introduces the part numbers of the de-ice boots and anti-icing boots manufactured by Hartzell Propeller Inc. When installed on Hartzell propellers, the Hartzell Propeller Inc. de-ice boots and anti-icing boots supersede de-ice boots and anti-icing boots from other manufacturers as shown in Table 2 of this Service Letter. (4) Hartzell Propeller Inc. only approves installation of de-ice boots and anti-icing boots supplied by Hartzell Propeller Inc. E. Approval (1) FAA approval has been obtained on the technical data in this publication. F. Compliance (1) Refer to the approved aircraft installation data to determine installation eligibility. Hartzell Propeller Inc. Application Guide 159 is an FAA accepted source for this information. (2) When replacement is required, (a) Install de-ice boots and anti-icing boots manufactured by Hartzell Propeller Inc. Refer to Table 2 of this Service Letter or Hartzell Propeller Inc. Application Guide 159 ( ) for approved part numbers. (b) Other manufacturer's de-ice boots and anti-icing boots, if received from Hartzell Propeller Inc., may be installed in place of Hartzell Propeller Inc. de-ice boots and anti-icing boots. Propeller Ice Protection System Manual 180 ( ) or this Service Letter. (2) De-ice boots, anti-icing boots, and airframe mounted ice protection system components not manufactured or supplied by Hartzell Propeller Inc. are controlled by the TC or STC holder's Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA). B. Installation (1) Install Hartzell Propeller Inc. airframe mounted ice protection system components in accordance with the appropriate TC or STC holder's approved installation instructions for the corresponding component. (2) Install Hartzell Propeller Inc. de-ice boots and anti-icing boots in accordance with Hartzell Propeller Inc. Propeller Ice Protection System Manual 180 ( ). Page 3 of 8
6 NOTE: C. Inspection, Repair, and Overhaul If boots from different manufacturers are intermixed on a propeller assembly, static and/or dynamic balancing of the assembly may be required. (1) Airframe mounted ice protection system components should be inspected as required in accordance with the approved aircraft maintenance manual. (2) Perform periodic inspections of de-ice boots and anti-icing boots in accordance with Hartzell Propeller Inc. Propeller Ice Protection System Manual 180 ( ).
