There are many considerations when selecting the right drive type for your IP Security and Surveillance environment. Don t let market hype sell you on something just because it s today s fad. This technical brief will help you sort through some of the confusion. Clearly understanding your requirements and the drives, interfaces, price/gb, and level of desired reliability available will greatly increase your position to make the right choice to meet your storage needs. Defining SAS, SATA, and SSD: Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is a point-to-point serial protocol that moves data to and from computer storage devices such as hard drives and tape drives. SAS replaces the older Parallel SCSI (pronounced "scuzzy") bus technology that first appeared in the mid-980s. SAS, like its predecessor, uses the standard SCSI command set. SAS offers backward compatibility with second-generation SATA drives. SATA 3 and 6Gbit/s drives may be connected to SAS backplanes, but SAS drives cannot connect to SATA backplanes. SAS provides a superior storage solution. With some storage requirements escalating and others becoming more complex, factors such as flexibility, performance, increased reliability, greater density, security, scalability and accessibility are more critical than ever. IP environments must be online 24X7, fulfill requests from numerous users simultaneously, and allow for constant growth and expansion while in operation. IP environments require high capacity storage and high data availability for high I/O environments. BCDVideo TM offers HP's full portfolio of SAS drives meeting all these demands. Serial ATA (SATA) is a computer bus interface that connects host bus adapters to mass storage devices such as hard disk drives and optical drives. Serial ATA replaces the older AT Attachment standard (ATA; later referred to as Parallel ATA or PATA), offering several advantages over the older interface: reduced cable size and cost (seven conductors instead of 40), native hot swapping, faster data transfer through higher signaling rates, and more efficient transfer through an (optional) I/O queuing protocol. BCDVideo offers HP Large Form Factor (3.5-inch) and Small Form Factor (2.5-inch) SATA drives providing the lowest cost per GB targeted for non-mission critical applications with low workloads of 40% or less.** A solid-state drive (SSD) (also known as a solid-state disk, or electronic disk, though it contains no actual "disk" of any kind) is a data storage device using integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store data persistently. SSD technology uses electronic interfaces compatible with traditional block input/output (I/O) hard disk drives. SSDs have no moving mechanical components, which distinguish them from traditional electromechanical magnetic disks such as hard disk drives (HDDs) or floppy disks, which contain spinning disks and movable

read/write heads. Compared with electromechanical disks, SSDs are typically less susceptible to physical shock, much quieter, have lower access time, and less latency. However, while the price of SSDs has continued to decline in 202, SSDs are still about 7 to 8 times more expensive per unit of storage than HDDs. Many SSDs use I/O interfaces developed for hard disk drives, thus permitting simple replacement in common applications. **3.5 and 2.5 Form Factor First-things-first: You want to make sure the disk drives you are getting are enterprise-class, not consumer grade. Enterprise-class disk drives are those that pass the manufacturer s highest quality and reliability tests. Frequently new drive technology appears in consumer products before they are released in storage systems designed for data centers, and rightly so. Ask about how the drives have been tested and what quality standards are in place. BCDVideo offers tested, HP-qualified, SMART* capable, SAS, SATA Hard Drives and SSD offering data integrity and availability in hot-pluggable models and non-hot-pluggable. Form Factor include (3.5-inch) and Small Form Factor (2.5-inch).

All HP hard drives pass a rigorous qualification process, which ensures that every HP drive is proven to perform in your HP ProLiant server. Before final certification, all HP hard drives are optimized for compatibility and functionality, including support of SMART and HP Systems Insight Manager. *S.M.A.R.T.: Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology, first developed at HP, detects possible hard disk failure before it occurs, allowing replacement of the component before failure occurs. Name Raw bandwidth (Mbit/s) Transfer speed (MB/s) Max. cable length (m) SATA rev 3.0 6, SATA rev 2.0 3, SAS 600 (G6) 6, SAS 300 (G3) 3, Devices per channel (5 with port multiplier) (5 with port multiplier) (>65k with expanders) (>65k with expanders) Breaking down the Benefits: Let s start with SAS Traditional SAS systems have a transfer rate of 3Gb/s, so the new HP 6Gb/s SAS drives and Smart Array controllers have doubled the available bandwidth of storage subsystems. Given that 6Gb/s refers to the system throughput or the speed at which data travels among the components of the storage subsystem (the drive, controller, server backplane, and/or SAS expander and JBOD), will your system performance really improve? Well, if your environment consists of a small number of storage devices and your I/O workload is 40% or less, you probably won't see any benefits beyond generational improvements (e.g. performance and technology improvements that happen over time). In such environments, the bottleneck may actually be the speed at which bits can be moved to (from) the hard disk platters from (to) the hard disk's integrated controller and the fast transfer among storage devices may be "wasted". However and this is where IP based solutions fit in, if you're running multi-device, storage-intensive applications, such as video streaming, server virtualization, or real-time backup systems, you'll want to make sure your system doesn't saturate as often and pumping data through the system faster will help keep up with your heavy I/O demands. But keep in mind: if you are looking to achieve a 6Gb/s line rate, you need an end-to-end 6G infrastructure, including server backplanes, HBAs and storage controllers, as well as drives. If any of the components of a storage subsystem operate at different data transfer rates, the system bandwidth will be negotiated down to

an acceptable level for all components. The good news is that you don t have to upgrade your whole infrastructure at once. BCDVideo utilizes the new HP 6G SAS drives which are backward (hmm and sideways?) compatible with 6G/3G SAS and 3G/.5G SATA drives. Only those drives whose performance is suitable for an enterprise environment are selected through the HP qualification process and are labeled "best-in-class." All HP drives are proven to be reliable and tuned for optimum performance in the HP equipment for which they were designed. Now, Where does SATA fit? Dare I say it? SATA is the de facto standard for internal PC storage. But perhaps it s better stated that SATA WAS the de facto standard for internal storage. Current SAS technologies enables enterprises to significantly boost the scalability, performance and reliability of their SATA disk drive-based solutions. By leveraging Serial Attached SCSI s (SAS) compatibility with SATA SAS cables, connectors, HBAs, and RAID controllers are fully compatible with SATA and SAS drives. Furthermore, SAS controllers seamlessly identify and communicate with SATA devices, making a SAS controller just as efficient at issuing SATA commands as a SATA controller. SATA and SAS play distinctly different roles in the enterprise. The two technologies are complementary rather than competitive, with SATA disk drives optimized for low cost/gb and SAS drives built for transactional, high-availability applications. Together they can efficiently meet a broad spectrum of enterprise storage needs in a single infrastructure. For example, an eight-port SAS controller supports the connection of up to 28 SATA and/or SAS drives per port using external connectors and internal connector supports 8 SATA drives. Providing many different options for increasing storage needs. SATA disk drives have taken the enterprise by storm because they offer an unbeatable combination of low cost, high capacity and performance. So, it makes sense to maximize the extraordinary value of SATA drives by deploying them with Unified Serial Controllers, rather than with SATA controllers. SAS was specifically architected to deliver seamless compatibility with SATA drives, enabling SAS controllers to bring greater scalability and lower cost-per-drive to SATA deployments. Combined with SAS-ready innovations in SATA drive technology, SAS/SATA systems are more ready than ever for real-world applications. Simply put, investing in SATA drives just got smarter now that they can be partnered with SAS controllers in Unified Serial solutions. BCDVideo recognizes the value of utilizing SATA based drives for low camera count and low bandwidth and are sensitive to providing economical solutions to fit these needs.

Now let s talk SSD: It s quicker, it s lighter, it does not generate any noise and has a lower work temperature Furthermore, it doesn t have any mechanical, moving components so it offers you not only a very short response time but also great resistance to any shocks. So isn t SSD the answer to all our storage needs that we were waiting for? Yes, unfortunately PRICE is still the main reason why we are not widely utilizing SSD disks despite the benefits they bring the comparable capacity we can get in HDD for significantly less money. Random Access vs. Sequential Access. What is your priority? SSDs are at their most useful wherever random access is required more than a sequential access. Its memory modules can read and write data almost without any delay. Just think that in SSD access data occurs in about 0. milliseconds! While the traditional mechanical drive system must first set the read/write head, then go over to the place in which it has to read or write something. So, for a hard disk it can take from about 3 to even 5 milliseconds. It means that using SSDs can improve average access time from 30 up to 50 times! Furthermore, the latest SSD models are characterized by high endurance and can achieve much higher transfer speeds than hard drives. They can transmit up to GB of data per second! Their resilience to shocks and less sensitivity to impact is also worth the money. Because even slight shakes in the drive head in traditional magnetic disks when retrieving data may interrupt transmission, cause damage to magnetic disks, and thus even the permanent loss of data. So everything that we would prefer to avoid But one of the most important and convincing arguments for investment in SSD is the fact that their memory modules consume far less energy than the electric motors that drive heads in HDDs what in the long run may bring real cost savings to your company. But most of all SSDs don t heat up as much, so you will consume much less electricity to keep them cool. You and rest of the company team will also appreciate that thanks to the lack of mechanical parts SSD generate less operating noise in fact we can even say that they work soundlessly. Can you imagine that? A quite server room? And finally, SSDs don t need any maintenance. So yes, surely we can all agree that SSDs will fully meet its mission in server rooms but only when the costs are a secondary issue. Most companies, however do not have such a comfortable situation that is why the comparison of the capacity and TCO still effectively disqualifies the use of SSDs in most data centers, despite the obvious benefits. One last Item > Benefits of 6G SAS over 3G: 6G SAS drive features include dual port, full duplex, concurrent active channels, robust command queuing and superior error detection and correction over SATA. Dual port provides two redundant paths to every hard drive. This increases availability and reliability by supplying each drive with an alternate path of communication in the case that one path fails. SATA, which is single port, only offers one path to every hard drive. Thus, if this single path of communication fails, there may be data loss and system downtime.

SAS hard drives also provide two active (concurrent) channels, which allow data to be transmitted to and from the disk drive on two separate channels. This means that the drive can execute two write commands, two read commands or a write and read command at the same time. With SATA, there is only one active channel, which means you can only have one read or one write at a time. According to Seagate benchmarks, the combination of dual ports and concurrent channels on SAS hard drives yields an average performance increase of 35% over SATA. Perhaps more important than the performance benefits of SAS hard drives are the enhanced error detection and error correction capabilities that they offer.
