7 EAST L.A At risk youth, low income and culturally diverse families. Although the majority population is mono-cultural, there is a tremendous amount of diversity within the contest of that cultural experience, ranging from new immigration from Mexico, migration from other states, and the longtime presence of multigenerational residents dating back to the ranchos. Our team selected a few sites in the area and recruited about 100 students from different sites to conduct the project. Statistics Current estimates, there are over 28 million children in the US with parent(s) who work outside the home. Of those 28 million, about five to seven million students go home alone every day after school and are without any adult supervision.( U.S Department of Education and U.S Department of Justices, 1998)
8 Continued 35% of 12- year olds are left by themselves regularly while their parents are at work. (U.S Department of Education and U.S Department of Justice) Families are generally happy with after school programs, but the key is their existence; parents are relieved that their children have a safe place to go after school. (Schwartz, 1996)
