We test CA arcserve Unified Data Protection (UDP) and Veeam Backup & Replication v7 to see which is best for backup/restore, disaster recovery, replication and business continuity. Executive Summary In contrast to Veeam Backup & Replication, CA arcserve UDP is generally faster, costs less, works equally well in virtual and non-virtual environments, uses global deduplication, performs file-based as well as image-based backups, protects client computers as well as servers, offers CDP for the highest possible system availability and can restore data and operating state to bare metal (BMR). Uniquely, Veeam Backup & Replication can restore a SQL Server table and can concurrently back up several relatively small virtual machines more quickly. The following chart shows, at a glance, the significant differences between CA arcserve UDP and Veeam Backup & Replication v7. Veeam CA Backup & Replication v7.0 arcserve UDP Performs faster Easier to administer Costs less Backs up virtual and physical servers Has both image- and file-based backup High Availability (with true CDP) Supports several Hypervisors Relies completely on Hypervisor Restores Exchange folders and s Restores SQL Server tables Scales better Automated, assured disaster recovery Bare Metal Restore (BMR) Global deduplication APIs for 3rd party integration Disclosure: ion of this report funded by CA, Inc. 2 Note that our testing and analysis uncovered some high-level, significant limitations with Veeam Backup & Replication: It only does image-based backup It is intended for and only works in and with virtual environments It supports just two hypervisors (VMware and, with fewer features, Hyper-V) It has no High Availability component Its reporting & backup/network visualization features rely completely on hypervisor metrics It s inextricably tied to the VM hypervisor (if the hypervisor has a software error, Veeam has a software error) In this report, we look closely and in detail at the abilities and shortcomings of both CA arcserve UDP and. We compare and contrast the two products, feature by feature. CA arcserve UDP is a single product with a licensing structure that unlocks such functions as replication and high availability. Veeam Backup & Replication s components include the core Veeam Backup & Replication tool, Veeam ONE (reports), Veeam Management Pack (Microsoft monitoring helper module) and Veeam Smart Plug-in (SPI) (HP monitoring helper module). Veeam also offers some no-charge, limited-function, promotional versions: Veeam Backup Free Edition, Veeam ONE Free Edition, Veeam Extended GRL and Veeam Stencils (for Visio). Veeam offers its backup/recovery tool in three editions: Standard, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus. These editions vary mainly in features, user interface and how many CPU sockets each supports. CA arcserve UDP s significant features include: Recovery Point Server (RPS) CA arcserve UDP s brain. Generates catalogs, deletes expired backups, stores backup data sets, replicates data to other RPS machines, manages backup and restore operations and supervises CA arcserve Replication and High Availability operations. Data Deduplication An RPS can optionally use deduplication to save disk space by storing just a single copy of duplicate data in a backup. Integrated Replication On a continuous basis, each RPS can optionally maintain multiple copies of backup data via replication. These backup data Copyright All rights reserved

copies are available for virtually instantaneous use on secondary servers if a primary server fails. Microsoft Hyper-V Support Agentless backup of data on Hyper-V virtual machines, with support for Virtual Standby (see below), incremental backups, data compression and data deduplication. VMware vsphere Support Agentless backup of data on VMware vsphere virtual machines, with support for Virtual Standby (see below), incremental backups, data compression and data deduplication. Windows and Linux Clients Uses a small agent to back up Windows or Linux client (workstation) data (physical or virtual). Backup Plans Easy-to-administer named policies that specify exactly how to make backup copies of your data. Each plan contains instructions for copying data, replicating data, making secondary and tertiary copies of data (typically offsite), setting up and maintaining Virtual Standby machines and notifying administrators that a backup job succeeded or failed. RPS Share Plan Establishes client backup plans, maps multiple Windows users to a plan and shares the plan with remote RPS machines. Multiple Data Store Options CA arcserve UDP can store data on a local disk, a remote file server, a virtualized storage device or a NAS device. Compression, global data deduplication and strong encryption are settable options. Sophisticated Scheduling Performs backup, merge, retention and replication tasks when and how you specify. Virtual Standby -- Maintains an up-to-date standby (secondary) virtual server that can instantly replace a failed primary server in either physical-to-virtual (P2V) or virtual-to-virtual (V2V) mode. Automated or manual failover. Useful Reports CA arcserve UDP tells administrators the current status and health of backup jobs and backup environment with such details as Managed Capacities, Backup Sizes, Backup Status, Virtualization Protection Status and Data Distribution on Media. Multi-layer Data Recovery Options Recover data for an application, a specific file, an entire file system or a VM. Instant volume-level recovery for Linux. Exchange Granular Restore Recover mail for an account, an account s mail folder, a single mail item or an entire Exchange system. Bare Metal Recovery (BMR) Restores a Windows or Linux computer s complete operating environment, including files, settings and operating system, to a different hard disk, to a similar but different computer or to even a dissimilar computer. Copy File or Recovery Point Saves extra copies of a particular file or an entire recovery point to the specified disk or cloud destination(s) for added data protection. RPS Jumpstart Move large data stores to a new remote RPS via external device (e.g., USB flash drive memory). Copyright All rights reserved

File-based backup features Replication/high availability features The first section contrasts CA arcserve UDP and Veeam Backup & Replication for ease of use and overall features. Ease of Use and Overall Features CA arcserve UDP has a new, sophisticated Web-based user interface, the Unified Management Console (UMC). The UMC is a single pane through which administrators manage, direct and control the entire breadth of CA arcserve UDP functions. The UMC is task-based, simple to use, intuitive, easy to navigate and responsive. It offers onestep-at-a-time, guided wizards for everyday operations, reporting functions, creating a new RPS, establishing backup/recovery policies and other tasks. With the UMC, an administrator is never more than a mouse-click away from seeing backup status information, producing reports, adjusting a backup schedule, or if need be restoring a computer to a known-to-be-good, running state. With the UMC, an administrator can easily see and manage all servers and clients. He or she can even use a mobile device to access the UMC. As an extra bonus, a carefully-designed, well-documented programmatic interface is available that MSPs and large enterprises can use to quickly and surely integrate CA arcserve UDP into an existing complex data center environment. Data visibility is crucial to data backup reliability. CA arcserve UDP s well-formatted and configurable dashboard reveals, at a glance, the current status of your backups. And, with a single click, CA arcserve UDP displays clear and highly descriptive graphical details regarding backup sets and backed up data. In contrast to CA arcserve UDP s advanced-technology Web-based interface, Veeam Backup & Replication uses Microsoft design standards and Microsoft user interface guidelines to present a tree view of backup sets and objects. Veeam Backup & Replication s user interface is not as intuitive or as responsive as CA arcserve UDP s. Also note that you must have at least one VM actively running in order to administer Veeam Backup & Replication. Veeam Backup & Replication can show a configurable dashboard display of backup/restore status information. However, with Veeam Backup & Replication, visualizing backup status requires more navigations steps. And navigating and selecting Veeam Backup & Replication s reports, we found, is labor-intensive. If you have multiple site backups, both CA arcserve UDP and Veeam Backup & Replication consolidate and centralize backup status information from all sites. Copyright All rights reserved

The overall feature set of CA arcserve UDP far exceeds that of Veeam Backup & Replication. CA arcserve UDP has global deduplication, assured recovery, built-in replication, full system high availability/failover, optimized bandwidth usage, better scalability, client/workstation protection, BMR and a comprehensive set of APIs for 3rd party integration. Veeam Backup & Replication does offer a programmatic interface, but it lacks these other features. If you have a hybrid physical-and-virtual environment, Veeam Backup & Replication forces you to license two different vendor s backup and recovery products one physical, the other virtual. The two-vendor approach doesn t make sense because it s more expensive and less productive. Veeam Backup & Replication s Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is always going to be higher than if you d licensed your backup/recovery from a single vendor. CA arcserve UDP is a single answer for IT organizations that need both physical server and virtual server backup and recovery. It offers image- and file-based backup, replication and true high availability for both physical and virtual environments. Unlike Veeam Backup & Replication, CA arcserve UDP can backup Windows-based clients (workstations). Veeam Backup & Replication only supports virtual servers (and then only VMware and Hyper-V). Moreover, Veeam Backup & Replication is purely image-based. Notably, CA arcserve UDP s Virtual Standby feature can convert backups from both physical and virtual servers to VMs for near instantaneous recovery. Veeam Backup & Replication s server-to-server data exchanges, even for its Instant Recovery feature, must occur strictly within a virtual environment. CA arcserve UDP s BMR can easily recover an entire Linux or Windows machine (server or client), including hidden Registry files and system status information, thus putting a computer quickly back to work even after a hard drive failure. Furthermore, CA arcserve UDP s BMR can restore data from physical and virtual servers onto dissimilar hardware (P2P, P2V, V2P and V2V). Veeam Backup & Replication operates only in the virtual world and cannot perform BMR. Because it spans physical and virtual environments, CA arcserve UDP offers both physical-to-virtual and virtual-to-physical replication and high availability. Veeam Backup & Replication lacks these capabilities. Impressively, CA arcserve UDP s image-based backup and high availability functions can be used to quickly and easily perform physical-to-virtual migrations. Veeam Backup & Replication lacks this capability, too. Copyright All rights reserved

CA arcserve UDP s support for both physical and virtual environments extends into the cloud including physical-to-cloud backup migration, replication and high availability. Veeam Backup & Replication also lacks these features. Global deduplication At your option, CA arcserve UDP stores only a single copy of enterprise-wide duplicate data. The to-all-employees messages that everyone saves copies of, the widely-distributed documents that people file away, the videos that people like to archive and the common application files that each user has are all good examples of across-the-company duplicate data. CA arcserve UDP maintains a global index of duplicate data. Whether the duplicate data consists of just a few users files in one location or is spread across New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Sydney, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Mumbai, Tel Aviv, Cairo, Athens, Berlin, Paris and London CA arcserve UDP globally deduplicates your data. It carefully notes the duplicate data s different locations in its deduplication database, which CA arcserve UDP distributes among the various RPS servers. We found another feature particularly appealing: CA arcserve UDP can store its deduplication database on Solid State Disks (SSDs). The result is improved performance and reduced bandwidth utilization. Furthermore, CA arcserve UDP secures the deduplication process with encryption and per-session passwords. Veeam Backup & Replication s deduplication is local, working on only one node at a time. Automated Disaster Recovery (DR) and Assured Recovery You can instruct CA arcserve UDP to automatically fail over to an alternate set of servers (likely at a remote site or hosting provider) when disaster strikes. Without disrupting your business or the flow of data in your organization, CA arcserve UDP will even periodically test the failover process. The test produces a detailed report that you (and compliance auditors) can use as evidence of system recoverability. Quick, worry-free disaster recovery is a hallmark of CA arcserve UDP. Replication CA arcserve UDP can send a copy of each and every data output (i.e., write) operation to a secondary destination. The replication destination can be, for example, a separate RPS, a secondary server or a cloud. The replication destination is an instantly-available secondary resource in case of disaster. Intelligently, CA arcserve UDP uses compression, encryption, WAN optimization and bandwidth throttling to give you control over the replication process, including network bandwidth utilization and thus costs. The replication feature uses HTTP tunneling to avoid firewall and Network Address Translation (NAT) issues. CA arcserve UDP can replicate in a one-to-one, one- Copyright All rights reserved

to-many or many-to-one fashion. CA arcserve UDP keeps the replicated server(s) perfectly synchronized with the primary (source) server(s). High Availability/Failover CA arcserve UDP s HA achieves virtually 100% uptime for servers you designate by monitoring applications and background services running on a server. If a service fails, CA arcserve UDP attempts to restart it. If the restart fails, the system can be set to automatically fail over to a replica (or failover) server. Alternately, the administrator can set the system to not automatically failover, thus allowing the administrator to investigate the problem. The administrator can then choose to use manual push-button failover. CA arcserve UDP can monitor a single server, group of servers, server farm or specific applications, such as Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint, IIS and Dynamics CRM, thus ensuring maximum availability. When a hardware or application failure occurs, CA arcserve UDP activates the replica server(s). It gives the replica servers IP addresses and host names during activation to make failover transparent to end users, many of whom will never even know the failover happened. Scalability CA arcserve UDP s architecture is eminently scalable. To save money, a small company might add RPS functionality to an existing file server. At the other end of the spectrum, a large enterprise might install individual CA arcserve UDP elements on a variety of dedicated servers throughout the organization s data centers. CA arcserve UDP can support any server or application topology. APIs for 3rd party integration Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and large enterprises can easily integrate CA arcserve UDP into their existing organizational structures via a comprehensive, simple-to-use and clearly documented Web-API programmatic interface. In a similar manner, Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager exposes its objects via a programming protocol based on the REST (Representational State Transfer) framework. Pricing The following tables show Veeam s and CA s prices for Backup & Replication and CA arcserve UDP. Both products include one year of maintenance. While the two fee schedules are structured somewhat differently, our analysis reveals that Veeam Backup & Replication costs more yet provides far fewer features than CA arcserve UDP. For instance, the a la carte purchase of just a single 6-CPU-socket server license of Veeam Backup Management Suite Enterprise edition will cost you $9,300. In contrast, CA arcserve UDP Premium Edition for a 6-CPU-socket server is only $7,170. Copyright All rights reserved

Image-based Backup An image-based full system backup contains everything about a computer at the moment the backup copy was made the operating system, the system s current state and the data file disk blocks. The backed up image can later be restored (termed a Bare Metal Restore operation, or BMR) either to the same computer or to another computer of different brand and type. Additionally, image-based backup products offer granular recovery at the application and file level for faster recovery. 11 Image-based Backup Notes Technology Both CA arcserve UDP and Veeam Backup & Replication offer synthetic backups, in which a full backup is assembled, or synthesized, from a baseline full backup and subsequent incremental backups. CA arcserve UDP s image-based backup is built on its patent-pending Infinite Incremental (I 2 Technology). With I 2, users can do a full backup initially and then only perform incremental backups from that point forward. This technology leverages Windows VSS and has been designed to intelligently manage the backup of only blocks of data that have changed since the last backup and present a consolidated point-intime view of the protected volume for multiple recovery types, thus reducing your recovery time. Veeam s synthetic backups use Veeam s proprietary virtual machine changed-block driver to detect data blocks needing backup. While CA arcserve UDP is truly infinite you only have to create a full backup once, at the beginning Veeam recommends that you periodically re-create full backups about once a week. CA arcserve UDP and Veeam Backup & Replication can each create snapshots as often as every 15 minutes. However, on certain HP SAN storage media (HP StoreVirtual VSA, HP StoreVirtual and HP StoreServ), Veeam Backup & Replication can create snapshots as often as the HP storage media can produce them. Note: These HP storage media products come with management software that can schedule snapshots. If you have one of these HP products, you can create and manage your own snapshots. HP virtual storage customers might not need Veeam Backup & Replication at all. Operating Systems/VM support Both CA arcserve UDP and Veeam Backup & Replication support Linux as well as Windows. However, the two products vary in their support for virtual machine environments. CA arcserve UDP supports more virtualization platforms than Veeam Backup & Replication. These platforms include VMware ESX and vsphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer and Redhat KVM. Veeam Backup & Replication works with two VM vendor s products, VMware ESX/vSphere (including V5.5) and Microsoft Hyper-V (including Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V). Note that Veeam Backup & Replication s Hyper-V features always lag behind the vendor s VMware features. Veeam typically updates its Hyper-V product months after it adds features to its VMware product Copyright All rights reserved

CA arcserve UDP protects the entire VMware or Hyper-V hypervisor host, while Veeam Backup & Replication does not. CA arcserve UDP can thus recover an entire virtual host, as a single entity. Device support CA arcserve UDP s backup targets can be nearly any device. Veeam Backup & Replication backup targets must be the following: Direct Attached Storage (DAS) connected to the backup repository server Network Attached Storage (NAS) able to present itself as CIFS (SMB) or NFS share Native tape drive device Storage Area Network (SAN), provided the backup repository server is connected directly to the SAN fabric via hardware HBA or software iscsi initiator and the corresponding volumes are seen by Microsoft Windows Disk Management Client/workstation support CA arcserve UDP protects both virtual servers and Windows workstations (clients). Veeam Backup & Replication works only with virtual servers. Cloud support CA arcserve UDP works with Amazon Web Services as well as Microsoft Windows Azure and Eucalyptus. Veeam Backup & Replication supports 15 public storage cloud vendors. Granular Recovery Veeam Backup & Replication can restore nearly any object or sub-object within a virtual environment to a sandbox environment. While CA arcserve UDP can recover entire SQL Server databases or other file-level objects, its finer granularity is limited to Microsoft Exchange databases mailboxes, notes and attachments. In contrast, Veeam Backup and Replication can even restore individual SQL Server tables. To use Veeam Backup & Replication s granular recovery, an administrator first chooses the desired restore point and starts the target application on a special recovery VM (the sandbox ). Once the object is recovered in the sandbox, the administrator can then copy application objects to the production VM instance. The administrator uses a Windows Explorer-like interface to retrieve specific Microsoft Exchange elements from a Veeam Backup & Replication backup set. However, see our note, below, regarding the restoration of individual SQL Server tables. Copyright All rights reserved

NOTE: Restoring SQL Server Tables Can Be Risky Suppose you add customer ABC to the SQL Server database on Monday. ABC becomes a new row in the Customer Table. On Tuesday, customer ABC places order #111, which becomes a new row in the Order Table. On Wednesday, customer ABC places order #222, which also becomes a new row in the Order Table. On Thursday, a sysadmin restores the Order Table to late Tuesday. Order #222 then no longer exists. You then have database errors/omissions/inconsistencies. The scenario in which you delete customer ABC and his orders but then restore the Order Table to a point in time at which ABC s orders still existed is even worse. You then have no Customer Table entry for ABC, but you have ABC s orders in the Order Table. (How would you feel if your bank were able to restore individual tables relating to your bank account balances?) Practically speaking, you never want to be able to restore only part of a SQL Server database. It s far too risky. Off-site replication of images Both CA arcserve UDP and Veeam Backup & Replication can replicate image-based backups to an off-site location. Veeam Backup & Replication s Enterprise Plus edition is pre-programmed with three WAN acceleration features: Caching, data fingerprinting and TCP/IP optimization. We found these features less than useful and far from effective. The experts in WAN acceleration (e.g., Cisco, Riverbed and Exinda) use an approach that dynamically responds to changing WAN link conditions to best manage WAN link throughput. Our testing showed that Veeam s pre-programmed approach does not sense WAN link traffic levels or WAN link health (such as dropped packets) and thus cannot dynamically adjust to changing WAN link conditions. See Figure 3, below. Bare Metal Restore (BMR) Uniquely, CA arcserve UDP can restore Windows and Linux images onto similar or dissimilar hardware through BMR. Veeam cannot. To its credit, Veeam s Backup & Replication does have a virtual-only Instant Recovery feature (described below). Deduplication Veeam offers only local, inline data deduplication. CA arcserve UDP s data deduplication is global, spanning all backup sets in all locations. Copyright All rights reserved

Be aware that Veeam s data deduplication can be CPU-time and disk-time intensive. For the sake of saving some disk space (a fairly inexpensive resource), the deduplication feature has to rummage through the backup files to determine if Veeam Backup & Replication has already made a copy of a particular data block. The problem is so severe that Veeam automatically disables deduplication when backup files exceed the maximum size recommended by Veeam. Veeam says, This [automatic disablement] measure is intended to increase the reliability of deployments that perhaps were not carefully planned or are not optimally configured. For greater performance and reliability, CA arcserve UDP maintains a distributed deduplication database among RPSes. Virtual Standby CA arcserve UDP offers Virtual Standby, a feature that makes up-todate copies of backup images (recovery points) available for immediate use in case of a system outage, thus offering near-instantaneous system recovery. CA arcserve UDP s Virtual Standby feature automatically converts recovery points into VMDK and VHD formats and automatically registers with the hypervisor. It offers automated and manual failover. Furthermore, CA arcserve UDP s virtual standby works in either physical-tovirtual (P2V) or virtual-to-virtual (V2V) failover modes. Veeam Backup & Replication lacks an automated virtual standby feature. It does have, however, vpower, which consists of essentially two capabilities: (1) Publishing a backup as a VMDK file and (2) running a VM directly from a backup, without having to first restore the VM (this is Veeam s Instant Recovery ). Veeam Backup & Replication can perform a VM recovery from HP StoreVirtual VSA and LeftHand SAN devices. Central Management Working with disk images is easy and painless with CA arcserve UDP's Web 2.0-based UMC. Veeam s user interface, although less responsive and intuitive than CA s, is also a point-and-click affair. Central Reporting CA arcserve UDP s Central Reporting produces much more useful and informative reports regarding disk image recovery points than does Veeam Backup & Replication. Both products integrate with Windows Explorer to show the contents of an image file as a mountable drive letter. Veeam Backup & Replication, like CA arcserve UDP, displays a useful dashboard of backup job status information. Both Veeam Backup & Replication and CA arcserve UDP offer reports for backup job monitoring and capacity planning. Performance and Media Usage CA arcserve UDP s I 2 is generally faster than Veeam Backup & Replication s synthetic full backup process. I 2 also uses slightly less storage space. For a single-server system comprising 300 GB, Figure 1 shows the relative performance of CA arcserve UDP I 2 and. The source machine in this example was running two concurrent virtual machines. 16 Across a typical T1 frame relay WAN link with varying traffic levels and occasional (inevitable) spates of dropped packets, Veeam Backup & Replication s WAN acceleration feature fared poorly. Figure 3 graphically illustrates the difference between CA arcserve UDP and Veeam Backup & Replication when we used a T1 WAN link for off-site replication of image-based backup files CA ARCserve UDP Figure 3. CA arcserve UDP s global deduplication used only 118 GB to store the same data that Veeam Backup & Replication needed 131 GB to hold. Figure 4 depicts the resulting storage requirements Disk Space Used After 3 Months (GB) Figure 4. CA arcserve UDP I 2 vs. Veeam Backup & Replication image-based disk storage utilization RTO/RPO Performance Testing To measure CA arcserve UDP s and Veeam Backup & Replication s Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) performance, we simulated the destruction of four Windows Server computers containing a total of 360 GB in a small data center. One of these computers ran SQL Server 2008, one ran Internet Information Server (IIS), one ran an OLTP business application and the fourth was the backup server. All the VMs used vsphere. Both CA arcserve UDP and Veeam Backup & Replication recorded snapshots every fifteen minutes and transferred backups to a remote location. Four computers at the remote location stood by, waiting to go to work in case of a disaster. We measured the minutes needed to recover data and resume operations. Using CA arcserve UDP in one test and Veeam Backup & Replication in another test, an administrator at the remote location restored the transferred data onto the waiting secondary servers. The test concluded when the administrator had restored all servers and had brought the OLTP application back online. Copyright All rights reserved

The CA arcserve UDP administrator needed just 46 minutes to restore data to the VM servers and resume the OLTP application. The Veeam Backup & Replication administrator needed 50 minutes (4 minutes more) to restart the systems. Note that the testing depicted earlier in Figures 1, 2 and 3 occurred on a single computer, while our RTP/RPO testing used two sets of four computers. Also, the earlier charts show only the time to complete a backup job. They do not include times for such other disaster recovery tasks as restarting applications. Not all IT organizations use image-based backup technology and many still rely on filebased backup, especially if they want to use a direct-to-tape backup strategy. In the next section, we had planned to compare CA arcserve UDP and Veeam Backup & Replication v7.0 file-based backup and restore capabilities in a virtual environment, but Veeam does not offer file-based backup, only image-based backup. Therefore Veeam did not achieve any scores in the following section. File-based Backup A file-based backup contains copies of applications and data files you designate, file by file and directory by directory. The backup process automatically and regularly creates the latest backup copy onto whatever media you specify tape, disk, USB memory or other device. You can archive older backup copies offsite, for safekeeping. Restoring the data copies it back to the source machine or other computer that typically already has an operating system installed on it. However, most file-based backup products also offer some type of bare metal restore (BMR) for system recovery. 19 Feature Veeam Backup & Replication V7.0 CA arcserve UDP SRM reporting Basic backup reporting Infrastructure visualization Central management Deduplication Public and private cloud support File archiving Integration with image-based backups Synthetic full backups 0 4 File-based backup features aggregate ranking File-based Backup Notes CA arcserve UDP has a wealth of file-based backup features. Moreover, it s fast, reliable and frugal in its use of storage space, offering built-in global data deduplication at no additional cost. CA arcserve UDP can migrate image-based backups to tape for archive and compliance purposes. CA arcserve UDP supports a myriad of operating systems, applications and backup devices, including tape and Virtual Tape Library (VTL). CA arcserve UDP has superior reporting, its infrastructure visualization feature is unequalled and its central management console is responsive and intuitive. CA arcserve UDP Central Reporting provides global views, administration and reporting on all devices, settings and policies (running on-premise and off-premise) protected by CA arcserve UDP. 20 backup operations, identify long-running backup operations, locate backed up data, discover whether data is encrypted, know the company s disaster recovery status and track volume, disk and memory usage on each server. In the last features table, let s examine the huge differences between CA arcserve UDP and Veeam Backup & Replication in the areas of replication and high availability. Replication and High Availability The Replication process continuously copies changes made to one (master) computer s files to a secondary (replica) computer. The replica computer is always an exact copy of the master (provided that all byte-level changes made on the master computer are successfully transmitted across the LAN or WAN to the replica). High Availability manages the relationship between the master and replica computers in a way that makes the replica computer almost instantly assume the role of master if the master computer suffers a problem. Users are automatically redirected to the replica as part of the failover process. The result is a file, application or database server that s very nearly always available. Multiple master and replica computers are possible, and Replication can be configured for one-to-one, many-to-one and one-to-many scenarios. Replication and High Availability Features Comparison Table (Scoring from 0 to 5, with 5 the highest) Feature Veeam Backup & Replication V7.0 CA arcserve UDP Replication 4 5 True high availability (hot failover) Server support Operating System and application support RTO/RPO (for disaster recovery) 2 5 Cloud Integration Continuous Data Protection (CDP) Copyright All rights reserved
