2 The main aim of our forerunners at the origin of our Commission, as early as 1881, was to provide harmonized and updated geological representation of the entire World. From those times up to now, CGMW has made available widely harmonized series of geoscientific maps covering the entire World at 1:25M and zooms of large part of the onshore and off shore areas, at scales ranging from 1:10M to1:5 M.

3 CGMW maps are realized in partnership with: -our Statutory members that are national organizations responsible for solid earth and ocean science mapping of all the countries or territories of the World which ad-here to CGMW; - Associate members, public or private organizations, interested in and supportive of the CGMW s work; -in close coordination and with the support of UNESCO, IUGS and sponsors.

4 Our maps are coherent synthesis of updated scientific information in order to ensure the best quality of the deliverable to be used both by researchers, students and teachers. In order to provide the best representation of the geology of our planet CGMW is organized following a scheme of thematic, continental & oceanic sub commissions.

9 In order to reinforce the educational purpose of its maps, CGMW decided, as from 2000, to publish 48 page booklets accompanying maps to depict phenomena related to the maps and/or to explain the map. The booklets are presented on an A4 landscape format, easy to print at low cost, and are accompanied by a CD-ROM containing all figures in jpeg. and/or ppt. format to be used for teaching.

32 Conclusion: Thanks to the support of our partners, CGMW can grant affordable prices for its products. The success of the couple map-booklet encourages CGMW to pursue on this way to provide maps prepared by international teams using top level data associated booklets in order to ensure an efficient outreach. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our international contributors.

34 Onegeology initiative Make existing geological map data accessible in whatever digital format is available in the participating country; Transfer know-how to those who need it; Adopt an approach that recognizes that different nations have differing abilities to participate; Stimulate a rapid increase in interoperability (i.e. disseminate GeoSciML further and faster); Raise the profile of geoscience, geological map data and geological surveys.
