Note that Temperatre Compensation and Eqalize Voltage are options that mst be ordered DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION 12.1 See Figre 3. The PCM500 controls and monitors p to for rectifier shelves containing p to for rectifiers each. This is accomplished by means of the for connectors J1 throgh J4 which connect to rectifier shelves one throgh for, respectively. Throgh these connections the PCM500 controls the rectifier otpt voltage which is preset by the VFL (float voltage) and optionally by VEQ (eqalize voltage) adjstment potentiometers. The front panel EQ/FL switch pts the rectifier otpts in either the eqalize or float mode The PCM500 also monitors the AC inpt and DC otpt of each of the rectifiers and gives an LED warning and Form C relay contact alarm in case of failre of any one The PCM500 also monitors for alarms p to two low voltage disconnect panels and p to five fse panels or circit breaker panels. The alarm otpts are Form C relay contacts which can be sed for remote or local system alarms. The PCM500 has inpts from the low-voltage disconnect panels and the fse panels or circit breaker panels Other alarm otpts are for battery overvoltage and battery ndervoltage. These are also Form C relay contacts Battery voltage and crrent are also monitored by the PCM500. They are read either by the optional front panel voltmeter and ammeter or from the front panel test points. An external shnt is reqired for crrent measrement CONNECTIONS 13.1 Rectifier Connections. Most of the connections to TB1 are alarm inpts and otpts. The Other I/O connections are varios analog type connections I+ and I- Inpt. These are the + and - connections from a meter shnt that is sed to measre battery crrent. See Section 15.3 on Crrent for frther details TC Inpt. This is the optional temperatre compensation inpt from the temperatre compensation probe that comes with this option. The probe is sed to measre battery temperatre which is sed to control the otpt of the rectifier. See Section 16.0 on Battery Temperatre Compensation. There is no polarity reference on this B+ and B- Inpt. These connections are to the common rectifier otpt bs which is sed to provide power to operate the PCM500 10
circitry CS Otpt. This is the crrent share connection to the for rectifier shelves and is sed only if additional rectifier shelves are added to the system ALARM ENABLING BS+ and BS- Inpts. These are battery sense inpts to PCM500 and are connected to the common rectifier bs near the battery bt on the rectifier side of any battery disconnect or LVD circit Alarm-Enable Switches. These switches are located at the center of the back panel. As shown following there are for colmns with six each DIP switches. The colmns and rows are nmbered. SWITCH NO. POSITION NO. Each switch controls one of the alarm fnctions. The PCM500 comes with all alarm fnctions disabled, with the switches in the left position. Moving a switch to the right enables that fnction Alarm Fnctions. There are 24 separate alarm fnctions controlled by the Alarm-Enable switches. Only those fnctions sed shold be enabled; otherwise false alarms will be created. The first 16 fnctions are rectifier/alarms. Provision is made for shelf nmber and rectifier nmber for p to for shelves with p to for rectifiers each. SR stands for shelf/rectifier. As shown in the following table the shelf no. and rectifier no. correspond to the switch no. and position no., respectively. Ths switch no. 2, postion no. 3 (2,3) enables the shelf no. 2, rectifier no. 3 alarm (SR23). When the proper rectifier alarmenable switches are set, if any one rectifier fails the RFA-MIN (Rectifier Failre-Minor) red LED will come on, and the RFA-MIN Form C relay will change state. If more than one rectifier fails the RFA-MAJ (Rectifier Failre- Major) red LED will come on and the RFA-MAJ Form C relay will change state. 11

The meter panel option (Option MP) provides a digital voltmeter and ammeter on the left front panel to monitor the battery voltage and crrent Voltage. The digital voltmeter reads battery voltage directly, to tenths of a volt. The volts test points on the right front panel also permit direct external measrement of the battery voltage when the MP option is not taken Crrent. The digital ammeter is scaled at the factory to read amperes based on a 50 millivolt external shnt and corresponding internal scale factor which mst be chosen at the time of ordering. The following table gives the ammeter shnt rating and ordering sffix code for the correct meter setting at the factory. The external shnt mst be connected with correct polarity across the I+ and I- inpt terminals (TB1 terminals 41 and 8, respectively). See Figre 4 and Section External 50mV Shnt CODE AMMETER SHUNT RATING 25 25A 30 30A 50 50A 75 75A A A A CODE AMMETER SHUNT RATING A A A A A A 12
Figre 4. Crrent Measrement Connections Figre 5. Test Setp for Setting Battery Overvoltage and Undervoltage 13
This table shows that, for example, a 50mV, 100A shnt is the shnt resistance that prodces 50mV for a 100A fll-scale crrent. In this case the shnt resistance is 50mV 100, or 0.5 milliohm. The shnt rating is always the fll-scale crrent that prodces 50mV across the shnt. The 3 ½ digit ammeter resolves crrent readings to 0.1A over the 25A to 200A fll-scale range. From 250A to 2000A fll scale, the meter resolves crrent to the nearest ampere. Overall accracy is moderate, generally within ±5%. Crrent may also be measred at the AMPS test points by sing a 50mV fll scale voltmeter. The external shnt mst be also sed for this measrement. The actal crrent mst then be determined by mltiplying the meter reading in millivolts by the fll scale shnt crrent divided by BATTERY TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION 16.1 The temperatre compensation option (Option TC) comes with a temperatre probe and 20-foot cable. The probe is a thermistor which is connected to TB1 pins 9 and 40. There is no polarity for this connection. The probe is sed to monitor the temperatre of the battery and adjst the rectifier otpt voltage accordingly. As battery temperatre increases, rectifier otpt voltage decreases The change in otpt voltage with temperatre is -3mV/ºC per battery cell, centered at 25ºC. For example, for a +10ºC temperatre change from 25ºC with the rectifier charging a 48V battery, the change in the rectifier otpt voltage wold be: 48 2 = 24 cells rv = 24 cells x 10ºC change x (-3mV) = -720mV = -0.72V 16.3 The probe can be located in several possible places: right on the battery to detect the battery temperatre; near the battery in free air to detect the local ambient temperatre; or on the power plant metal frame near the battery. For the procedre on calibrating this temperatre compensation system, see Section If the TC probe is either opened or shorted, the rectifier otpts revert to the float voltage. 14
17.0 INSTALLATION AND SETUP 17.1 Monting. The PCM500 can be monted in either 19- or 23-inch racks by sing the appropriate brackets.
