2 UNiversity CHAir on INnovation Background In the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region universities have very little cooperation with businesses Business in the MENA region seeks for a solution of their problems in Europe and America and do not contact the research institutions in their own countries IPPE at TU Graz and the other European partners have a good reputation and experience in academia-business cooperation The original idea for the UNIDO-global Network of Chairs on Innovation was developed with African universities

6 UNiversity CHAir on INnovation Overall objective To bridge the gap between needs of industry and supply from universities and associate training institutions through building up human resources and technology transfer by establishing a University Chair on Innovation o To increase the success rate of innovations in industrial enterprises. o To establish capacity to update (national) innovation policies and furthermore to increase awareness of the importance of innovation for sustainability.

9 UNiversity CHAir on INnovation Outcome MENA University Chairs on Innovation University Chairs on Innovation are established at all five MENA universities Chair holders carried out first activities o Internal and external information activities (e.g. internal and public website, PR strategies) o Trainings about innovation for academics and industries o Contacts to business/industry Chair holders work on sustainability o Institutional sustainability (e.g. innovation networks, Chairs in the universities mission, sustainability committee) o Financial sustainability (e.g. secure university commitment, financial structures)

17 UNiversity CHAir on INnovation Outcome EU-MENA Virtual Environment All MENA universities are equipped with a computer laboratory and necessary IT infrastructure A Virtual Environment was developed (wiki, mailing list, forum, live session, etc.) Trainings workshop on e-collaboration (Milano)

18 UNiversity CHAir on INnovation Objective 6 Strategy for University-Industry Cooperation in Innovation Documentation of the EU and MENA experiences Regular EU MENA experts meetings & final workshop Initiating and supervising of master theses about strategy

19 UNiversity CHAir on INnovation Outcome Strategy for University-Industry Cooperation in Innovation STRATEGY for boosting the cooperation of business with MENA universities has been established and distributed among partners Final workshop will be held in Casablanca in February 2012

20 UNiversity CHAir on INnovation Sustainability and future steps of Chairs on Innovation are sustainably established in the university frameworks and will be able to continue their duties also after the project end South-south cooperation is established; a MENA network is under design Several follow-up TEMPUS projects are prepared for the next call; coordinators will come from MENA countries Cooperation within FP7 is envisaged Cooperations between MENA and European Universities established UNIDO is preparing an extension of the project based on the Strategy Paper elaborated
