CEDS Common Core based on CSR 15
Combat Equipment for Dismounted Soldier Feasibility Study Programme (CEDS FSP) CEDS Programme Programme type: Cat B cms: FI, AT, DE, ES, FR, PT, SE, RO Budget: 2,8 M Aim: Identify possibilities offered by innovative technologies for soldier systems: - Observation - Energy - Human factors - Survivability Timeframe: Jan Dec 2015 Status: running Expected project results: Demonstration of state of the art technological solution in all CEDS FSP domains Military benefits: - Update of the Common Staff Requirements (CSR) for CEDS 16
CEDS FSP projects CEDS Programme OBSERVATION OBSERV Precision Targeting ENERGY SPER-PACK Energy Harvesting HUMAN FACTOR MUMSIS SURVILABILITY 17 ACCLITEXSYS LiVEST ihelmmat ACAMS
OBSURV Observation under reduced visibility CEDS Programme Aim: Ensure observation capability under reduced visibility conditions for dismounted soldier. Integration aspects for a complete soldier system will be addressed. Expected project results: - Recommendations for next steps for implementation of the technology in soldier systems. 18
Conceptual solutions Schematics for an monocular with SWIR/LWIR fusion Schematics for a Binoculars with SWIR/LWIR fusion 19
Simulation results Comparison for visibility performances for observation through fog for 120mm SWIR and LWIR Binocular/Scope, human target 20
Simulation results Comparison for visibility performances for observation through fog for 27mm SWIR and LWIR Monocular, tank target 21
Conclusions No (at least yet) universal solution that works in all conditions of reduced visibility Active devices are increasing significantly the probability of detection Although different combination of sensors and the use of image fusion can be beneficial in poor visibility, image processing in this case is limitative. These can be prohibitive regarding size and power consumption. The problem is still open, but given the fast progress in IT we expect that soon a feasible solution to emerge on the market. 22
CEDS-FSP PT - Precision Targeting Study CEDS Programme Aim: Define an open reference architecture and provide recommendations for the development of future Fire Control Systems. Military benefits: Enhanced interoperability, modularity and flexibility for procurement and fielding of new systems. Project results: - Required critical functions fully analyzed - Technology concept formulated - Open Architecture defined - Standardization of architecture would facilitate the development of more effective devices by focusing on specific components instead of developing full proprietary architectures. - Potential synergies detected when integrating command and control systems such as navigation aids, target designation, fratricide fire 23
SPER PACK - Soldier Portable Energy Reserve PACK CEDS Programme Aim: Propose a preliminary design of a flexible power supply system for the dismounted soldier Military benefits: - Allow soldiers to monitor, control and distribute available energy Project results: - Soldier power usage profiles - Compiled and detailed functional and performance requirements for a power system - Provided overview of available and promising technologies - Breakdown into SW/HW and functional relations - Preliminary design of HW and SW components as well as interfaces 24
Energy Harvesting CEDS Programme Aim: The aim of the study is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of a system for energy harvesting and its use as a part of the personal equipment of a soldier on the battlefield. Military benefits: - Provide back-up system to ensure a limited consumer operation over a shorter period and reduced service provision Project progress: - State of the art of energy harvesting completed - Concept design completed - Proposed prototypes for testing phase: - npower PEG (Personal Energy Generator) - Thermoelectric mess kit - MFC (Macro Fiber Composite) Modul optional: 25
MUMSIS Multi-Modal Soldier Interface System CEDS Programme Aim: - Develop a demonstrator of a wearable, multimodal soldier system that ensures the timely delivery and collection of reliable and accurate information in a context adaptive way and supports communication within the chain of command; - Evaluate the system from the human factors point of view; - Define system requirements for a proposed soldier system Military benefits: Increase soldier situational awareness without overwhelming information Results: - Two demonstrators: urban and arctic - Tested in field environment - Reconnaissance operation - Building clearing operation: 26
Visionary MUMSIS system architecture 27
ACCLITEXSYS - ACCLImatizationTEXtile SYStem CEDS Programme Aim: To study the conceptual development and evaluation of different technological approaches for the stabilization of the soldier s body temperature Military benefits Improvement of thermal comfort and soldier performance Cold environment Temperature range -19ºC - 6ºC CO +28ºC +39ºC A3 28 Hot environment
LiVEST Ultra-light Weight Bullet-proof Vests CEDS Programme Aim Illustrate the feasibility in developing of a body armour protection with high performance level as well as comfort benefits, trying to reduce weight of ballistic protection. Military benefits New ultra light ballistic protection vests based on new 3D structures. Project results - 3D structures, in ballistic vests: - As spacer: promising technology for termophysiological comfort, user positive evaluation in ergonomic tests. - Soft ballistic panels with integrated 3D high performance fibers: back face signature reduced maintaining weight, but V50 apparently reduced. - Hard plates monitoring system: - Sensors for monitoring integrity of hard plates: difficulties to avoid false positives in damage detection with the technology employed. - Feasible, but issues to be solved before achieving operational results. 29
CEDS Programme ihelmmat - Innovative HELMet MATerials for soldier head protection Aim: Conceptual development and evaluation of different techniques for improving head protection of dismounted soldier in battlefield conditions Military benefits: Improving the ballistic performance of the helmet without decreasing the comfort. Project results: - Reinforcement of helmet shell using CNT - Similar performance as current solutions - Raw material cost increment ( 10 %) - Overmoulding processing - Overmoulding of injected thermoplastic fabrics, and incorporation of CNT is feasible, although high initial costs. - CFD simulation - Results validate use of thermal camouflages, shell 30 thermal shields and phase change materials inner pads to keep temperature and humidity under acceptable and comfortable values.
ACAMS - Adaptive Camouflage for the Soldier CEDS Programme Aim: Identify, analyze and evaluate possible active and passive methods for adaptive camouflage Military benefits: Increase the survivability of soldier by a camouflage system well adapted to the background, light conditions, weather, threats and mission. Project results: Concepts for adaptive camouflage in a realistic scenario in European forest/urban terrain have been shown. A proof of concept poncho has been displayed in hardware. However, further work is needed to develop the concepts and present a useful demonstrator. 31
Conclusion study CEDS Programme AIM: To screen residual risks of CSR after FSP studies have been performed To identify readiness level of technologies to define a common core and common modules for all relevant capability areas To identify risks of certain CSR, which cannot be reduced by known technology 32

Standard Architecture for Soldier Systems (STASS) Power Project addresses - design a Standard Architecture for Soldier Systems with focus on power, - considering approaches and lessons learned from already fielded European systems, - identifying European requirements for such an Architecture, - seeking synchronization with and complement similar activities (e.g. NATO, UK), Objectives - reduce the whole life cost of ownership. - applicability to current and future systems. - interfaces that comply with publically available open standards. - promote third party competition by providing modular components. - conducting of cost-benefit analysis for the development and the implementation of such a standard, and - promoting the architecture to stakeholders. Status - running - promote innovation and diversity. - allow incremental improvement of systems. - make best use of commercial-off-the-shelf products (COTS). 34 Contractors: DEU: RDE, Fhg ICT
