1 DEPRECATION PLAN FOR ARCGIS 10.0 AND ARCGIS 10.1 We assess the required platfrms and functinality f the ArcGIS platfrm at each release t accunt fr changes in technlgies and markets. As a result, we add and drp sme platfrms and functinality at each release based n custmer needs and technlgy trends. This dcument utlines the changes in platfrm and functinality in the ArcGIS 10.0 and the upcming ArcGIS 10.1 releases. 2 ARCGIS 10 ARCGIS DESKTOP 10.0 ArcGIS 10.0 is the last release f Slaris supprt fr ArcReader and ArcGIS Engine; we will n lnger supprt the Slaris platfrm fr this functinality beynd ArcGIS 10.0 due t limited demand fr this platfrm. [Crrectin 8/18/2011] ArcGIS 10.0 is the last release with full Micrsft Visual Basic fr Applicatins (VBA) supprt. With ArcGIS 10.1 we will n lnger supprt VBA develpment. Esri strngly recmmends that n further develpment ccur with VBA and ArcGIS Desktp. Users wh have custm functinality built using VBA shuld actively plan strategies t rewrite their applicatins using a supprted develpment language such as Pythn, VB.NET, r C# s their applicatins cntinue t be peratinal and supprted in future releases f ArcGIS. T help with the migratin prcess, ArcGIS 10.1 will include the VBA Cmpatibility setup that will allw existing VBA cde t execute until the migratin is cmplete. ArcGIS 10.0 is the last release that the ArcObjects SDK fr Micrsft.NET will supprt Visual Studi ARCINFO WORKSTATION 10.0 ArcGIS 10.0 is the last planned release f ArcInf Wrkstatin. Hwever, ArcInf Wrkstatin 10.0 can be used in cnjunctin with newer versins f ArcGIS Desktp; knwn issues are that ArcDc will nt pen in Windws versins that d nt include legacy Windws Help supprt, and that the SDE layer and DBMS cnnect functinality will nt be upgraded beynd the versins supprted at ArcGIS 10. Users will cntinue t be able t use their existing ArcInf Wrkstatin 10 versin as the rest f the ArcGIS prducts and technlgies evlve, but we will nt release newer versins f ArcInf Wrkstatin. [Added 9/27/2011] ArcInf Wrkstatin will mve frm the General Availability Phase t the Mature Phase as f January 1st, ARCIMS 10.0 ArcGIS 10.0 was the last release f ArcIMS; we will n lnger ship ArcIMS in releases after ArcGIS With the adptin f ArcGIS Server and the mve t 64-bit servers, ArcIMS is n lnger the recmmended prduct fr prducing web maps. While n lnger shipped as part f ArcGIS, the current versin f ArcIMS (versin 10.0) will be cntinued t be supprted as part f the ArcGIS 10.0 lifecycle. ARCGIS SERVER 10.0 Page 2 f 8

3 ArcGIS 10.0 is the last ArcGIS Server release with supprt fr Slaris (with the exceptin f the ArcSDE technlgy cmpnent); we will nt supprt this platfrm after ArcGIS 10.0 due t limited demand fr the Slaris server platfrm. We will cntinue t supprt the ArcSDE cmpnent f ArcGIS Server n the Slaris platfrm beynd the ArcGIS 10.0 release. ArcGIS Server 10.0 is the last ArcGIS Server release with supprt fr lcal cnnectins frm Web ADF applicatins. The 10.1 Web ADF applicatins will nly supprt lcal cnnectins t Server versins prir t We recmmend develpers using lcal cnnectins fr accessing finegrained ArcObjects migrate their business lgic t Server Object Extensins. Fr Web ADF based editing applicatins (all f which use Lcal cnnectins), we urge users t lk at alternative web editing tls based in the ArcGIS Web Mapping APIs. ArcGIS Server 10.0 is the last release with supprt fr 32-bit perating systems. The next release f ArcGIS Server (10.1) will run natively as a 64-bit applicatin, requiring 64-bit perating systems [Added 8/18/2011] and databases [Added 6/07/2012].This includes the ArcSDE technlgy cmpnent f ArcGIS Server knwn as the ArcSDE applicatin server. ArcGIS Server 10.0 is the last release with supprt fr VBScript r JScript n ArcGIS Server fr Linux. VBScript and JScript will cntinue t be supprted n ArcGIS Server fr Micrsft Windws. Pythn scripting will be added as a replacement fr these scripting languages and ArcGIS Desktp will supprt authring Pythn scripts in areas where VBScript and JScript are presently used. ArcGIS Server 10.0 is the last release supprting publishing nn-ptimized map dcuments (MXD files). The next majr release will nly supprt publishing ptimized maps (MSDs) as that is the best practice fr map publishing. ARCGIS IMAGE SERVER 10.0 ArcGIS 10.0 is the last release f the stand-alne ArcGIS Image Server prduct. This prduct has been replaced with the ArcGIS Server Image Extensin. Any existing users f the stand-alne Image Server prduct r technlgy (using ISDef files), shuld plan their migratin t the ArcGIS Server Image extensin. Existing ArcGIS Image Server users shuld migrate frm using ISDef file t using the Msaic Datasets, a new data mdel in the gedatabase fr managing cllectins f imagery and rasters. Msaic Datasets are created and edited with ArcGIS Desktp (ArcEditr and ArcInf) and published using ArcGIS Server with the Image Extensin. Existing ISDef files can be added t Msaic Datasets fr cnversin. Page 3 f 8

4 ARCGIS 10.1 Smart Data Cmpressin ArcGIS 10.1, and its service packs, will be the last planned release that supprts Esri s Smart Data Cmpressin (SDC) data frmat. This includes SDC supprt in ArcGIS fr Desktp, Server, Engine, Mbile, ArcPad and Esri data prducts like StreetMap Nrth America and Esri s Business Analyst. The SDC data frmat is being replaced with Cmpressed File Gedatabase (CFGDB) file frmat [Added 6/07/2012]. ARCGIS DESKTOP 10.1 ArcGIS 10.1 will n lnger supprt the Slaris versins f ArcReader and ArcGIS Engine. [Crrectin 10/6/2011] ArcGIS Desktp, ArcReader, ArcGIS Engine 10.1 will be the last release that supprts Micrsft Windws Server 2003 / 2003 R2. [Crrectin 10/6/2011] ArcGIS 10.1 will be the last release supprting ArcReader fr Linux. At the 10.1 release, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5 & 6 will be supprted. Hwever, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS/ES/WS 4 will n lnger be supprted at We will n lnger supprt ArcReader n Linux after the ArcGIS 10.1 release. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5 & 6 will be supprted (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS/ES/WS 4 will n lnger be supprted at 10.1). ArcGIS 10.1 will n lnger supprt Micrsft Visual Basic fr Applicatins (VBA). 5 ARCINFO WORKSTATION There are n plans t release a new versin f ArcInf Wrkstatin at ArcGIS Hwever, ArcInf Wrkstatin 10.0 will be able t be used in cnjunctin with newer versins f ArcGIS Desktp. Users will cntinue t be able t use their existing ArcGIS 10.0 versin, but we will nt release newer versins. [Added 9/27/2011] ArcInf Wrkstatin will mve frm the General Availability Phase t the Mature Phase as f January 1st, ARCIMS ArcGIS 10.0 was the last planned release fr ArcIMS. At ArcGIS 10.1, ArcIMS will n lnger be shipped as part f ArcGIS. Users can cntinue t use existing versins f ArcIMS after this time; hwever, we will n lnger prvide new releases. Users shuld develp a plan and migrate t the ArcGIS Server and Web API technlgy. ARCGIS SERVER 10.1 ArcGIS Server 10.1 will be the last planned release fr the ArcGIS Server Web ADFs (Applicatin Develper Framewrk) fr bth Micrsft.NET and Java. Esri will cntinue supprting the Web ADFs during the 10.1 release cycle but nly fixes t critical issues will be addressed. N new functinality r enhancement requests will be addressed fr the Web ADFs. Web applicatin develpers are encuraged t mve t a web services based pattern with the ArcGIS Web Mapping APIs fr JavaScript, Flex, r Silverlight. [Crrectin 8/18/2011] ArcGIS Server 10.1 will n lnger supprt lcal cnnectins (DCOM cnnectins). ArcGIS Server 10.1 will be a web services (REST, SOAP, and OGC) server nly. This will have an impact n: The web editing functinality f default Web ADF will n lnger be supprted. ArcGIS 10.1 will cntinue evlving and enhancing its web editing capabilities n tp f the new Feature Service (new in ArcGIS 10) and the ArcGIS Web Mapping APIs. Custm develped applicatins frm business partners and users using fine grained ArcObjects thrugh DCOM will nt be supprted. Thanks t the recent enhancements in Server Object Extensins, develpers can nw migrate custm business lgic written at the web applicatin (Web ADF) level t custm ArcGIS Server services. Develpment against fine grained ArcObjects cntinues t be fully supprted fllwing the Server Object Extensin pattern fr extending ArcGIS Server services. Esri has been recmmending this apprach fr sme time already, due t its simplicity and imprved perfrmance. Page 5 f 8

6 Web ADF applicatins using nn-pled services will nt be supprted. Over the years, sme custmers have adpted a pattern fr their ArcGIS Server applicatins that use nn-pled services. ArcGIS Server 10.1 will be the last planned release fr the ArcGIS Server Manager Web Mapping Applicatin (Micrsft.Net and Java). ArcGIS Server Manager includes a wizard fr cnfiguring ut f the bx web mapping applicatins based n Web ADF technlgy. ArcGIS Server 10.1 is the last release f the Web Mapping Applicatin wizard in Manager. Esri will cntinue supprting the ArcGIS Server Manager Applicatin Wizard and Web Applicatins created with it during the 10.1 release cycle, but nly fixes t critical issues will be addressed. New ut f the bx applicatins [Added 8/18/2011] (ArcGIS Viewer fr Flex, ArcGIS Viewer fr Silverlight, ArcGIS fr Sharepint, ArcGIS.cm Viewer, ArcGIS Explrer Online) based n the ArcGIS Web Mapping APIs, as well as a new experience fr cnfiguring them, will be ffered as part f the ArcGIS Server 10.1 release. [Added 9/1/2011] ArcGIS Server 10.1 will n lnger supprt the use f Bing Maps layers r Bing Maps gecding tasks frm applicatins created with the ArcGIS Server Manager Applicatin Wizard r custm Web ADF applicatins. Supprt fr Bing Map layers acrss ther ArcGIS applicatins and ArcGIS APIs remains unchanged. ArcGIS Server 10.1 will n lnger supprt 32-bit perating systems. ArcGIS 10.1 will exclusively supprt 64-bit perating systems and databases [Added 6/07/2012]. Supprt fr 64-bit native executin acrss all the tiers f ArcGIS Server has been a lng awaited feature by many f ur custmers. 64-bit hardware is the nrm in tday s market and mst mdern ArcGIS Server deplyments d in fact run n 64-bit hardware. ArcGIS Server 10.1 will run as a native 64-bit applicatin exclusively requiring 64-bit capable hardware. This is based n Oracle s March 22, 2011 annuncement that they will discntinue all sftware develpment n the Intel Itanium micrprcessr. ArcGIS Server 10.1 n lnger supprts VBScript r Jscript [Added 8/18/2011] expressins n ArcGIS Server fr Linux. VBScript and JScript will cntinue t be supprted n ArcGIS Server fr Micrsft Windws. [Added 8/18/2011] Bth VBScript and Jscript expressins are used as part f labeling expressins in map dcuments r in specific geprcessing tls. Pythn scripting will be added as a replacement fr these scripting languages and ArcGIS Desktp will supprt authring Pythn scripts in areas where VBScript and JScript are presently used. ArcGIS Server 10.1 will n lnger supprt publishing [Crrectin/Added 8/18/2011] f ArcGIS Desktp map dcuments withut analyzing them first. In we intrduced tls fr analyzing yur map dcuments via the Map Service Publishing tlbar in ArcGIS Desktp. ArcGIS 10.1 will nt allw publishing f map dcuments that have nt been previusly analyzed. By enfrcing this step, maps are ensured t publish crrectly and run ptimally. During the analyze prcess, specific data surces, layer types and renderers will be flagged as errrs, preventing publishing: [Added 8/18/2011] Data surces: CAD files, ArcInf Wrkstatin Cverages, VPF, Map and Image Services, Persnal gedatabases, text and excel files. [Added 8/18/2011] Renderers: Custm Renderers (develped with ArcObjects), Linear Referencing Hatch Renderer, Bivariate renderer. [Added 8/18/2011] Layers: Tplgy layers, Layer Selectins ArcGIS Server 10.1 will n lnger supprt the Micrsft Access based Persnal Gedatabase. With the migratin f ArcGIS Server t be 64-bit and because f the lack f scalability f Persnal Gedatabases, we have remved supprt fr Persnal Gedatabases frm ArcGIS server Persnal Gedatabases will cntinue t be supprted n ArcGIS Desktp. [Added 8/18/2011] ArcGIS Server 10.1 s ArcSDE technlgy cmpnent will n lnger supprt 32-bit versins f the SDE cmmand line utilities r 32-bit versins f the C and Java APIs. With the migratin f ArcGIS Server t be 64-bit, the SDE cmmand line utilities and the ArcSDE SDK will be 64-bit nly. [Added 8/18/2011] ArcGIS Server 10.1 will nt supprt Micrsft SQL Server 2005 with enterprise gedatabases. At 10.1 enterprise gedatabases will supprt SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2. Esri als intends t supprt SQL Server Denali (SQL Server 2011) with 10.1 enterprise gedatabases nce Denali is in final release. [Added 9/14/2011] ArcGIS Server 10.1 will nt supprt Multi-Layer cache.
