Press October 2010 Texprocess Leading International Trade Fair for Processing Textile and Flexible Materials Frankfurt am Main, Dr. Michael Sturm Tel Fax sourcing Texprocess: what does the future hold in store for sourcing in the apparel industry? Leading international trade fair with innovative sourcing platform The cleft between cheaper and cheaper, faster and faster and ever greater individuality is growing and making life very difficult for players in the apparel industry and squaring the circle is impossible. This article looks at why this is so and what the future holds in store for sourcing in the apparel industry. Ideas in this connection can also be obtained at Leading International Trade Fair for Processing Textile and Flexible Materials in Frankfurt am Main from, and Source-it, the highgrade, international sourcing platform at the fair. It is long since the apparel sector was considered to be a pioneering industry in third-world countries. And rightly so because simple sewing work can be carried out by semi-skilled workers, and sewing machines are comparatively inexpensive. Whole cities and regions in the Far East, and in Central and South America, depend on the international apparel sector. In many cases, large subsidies were and still are being paid while international consultants are employed to help raise standards in these countries to the level expected in Western Europe. Since the abolition of quotas and the admission of China to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in the middle of the last decade, the attempt to play-off mass-produced goods from the Far East against up-market brands produced in small quantities in Europe, has not worked so well. There are many different reasons for this. Messe Frankfurt Exhibition GmbH Ludwig-Erhard-Anlage Frankfurt am Main

Page 2 Faster than the customer wants to buy Fast fashion with a new collection every week calls for highly coordinated logistical system ranging from product development to presentation at the customer s. In the nineties, this process usually took around 90 days. Today, only 60 are required. This Formula 1 pace is aided by extremely efficient product-lifestyle suites of special IT companies. However, the careful development of models, yarns, fabrics and fit suffers and leads to a decline in quality and run-ofthe-mill garments that, despite the very low prices, are not particularly attractive to consumers. The quantities sold at the normal price fall, customers wait until prices are slashed. In other words, the idea flops. As critic David Birnbaum (USA) pointedly puts it, the length of time the goods are offered in the shop for the normal price is shorter than the interval between customer visits. In other words, price cuts are inevitable. Vertical integration rather than outsourcing? The uncertainties of the multi-stage textile chain result in great risks in terms of quality and delivery punctuality, not to mention fluctuating freight charges and currency exchange rates. Interestingly, this situation has boosted vertically-integrated suppliers, the Zaras of this world, which control (almost) all of the process stages from yarn production to marketing. Virtually in real time, they evaluate article sales, transport models from A to B as needed and offer new fashions in response to needs. One of the first vertically-integrated suppliers is the Italian knitwear company Benetton, which nowadays rules over an empire of more than 6,000 stores worldwide and total revenues of around two billion euros (2009). However, not all brands and suppliers want to be so tightly bound to production capacities. Today s brands are more often dealers than manufacturers Which of today s popular brands actually produces its fashions, not to mention accessories and perfumes? The answer is not many

Page 3 because, in numerous cases, only the brand itself and managerial, marketing and creative personnel remain in Europe, close to the market. The products are made worldwide. There are two basic approaches: the bargain hunter, who is always on the look out for even cheaper production facilities, and the solid relationship manager who treats his producers and partners. In the long run which means five to seven years in the fashion sector it is the relationship manager who comes out top in the last analysis because he or she has the process chain and standards of quality better under control. However, the trend is shifting away from outward processing, where the customer (the brand) purchases and finances the material, and the producer only cuts and makes up the product, to full service business where the producer assumes responsibility for all aspects of procurement including cutting, designing and financing the products. The reason: the material can account for as much as 70 percent of the cost of production. From the time the material financed by the customer reaches the producer, the former is, for good or evil, fully dependent on the loyalty and expertise of the latter. In practice, there is, as in so many cases, plenty of room for numerous variations between the two procurement models, including joint ventures and shareholdings. Standardised mass-produced products or tailor-made garments? The sector is characterised by two extremes. On the one hand, there are basic articles that are produced in very large and, therefore, very cost-efficient quantities. On the other hand, there are individual, industrially made-to-measure suits, costumes and shirts. And, in between these extremes, there are the usual production-batch sizes, e.g., fabrics are dyed from lengths of min. 300 metres, which is enough for around 200 blouses in one colour, while special patterns can be colour-woven from fabric lengths of min. 5,000 metres, which is sufficient for 2,000 pairs of trousers. Having the exclusive rights to

Page 4 a fabric always also means purchasing a minimum quantity. The textile industry is changing over step-by-step to the production of smaller quantities and, for many years, has been investing in new machines that can be converted rapidly to different products. Thanks to specific software, the garment-manufacturing industry has long been able to vary models or develop new ones at short notice. However, the majority of Asian bulk producers cannot cope with an order for 500 pieces per model in three colours and six sizes. Central Europe s buyers discovered the Mediterranean countries and the former East Bloc countries twenty years ago. Turkey is the main supplier nation with Morocco, Tunisia, Romania and Bulgaria also ranking among the preferred production countries. Close proximity, not to mention a related cultural background and mentality, as well as the ability to work flexibly, compensate for the higher sewing costs. Exclusive articles are still made for preference in Italy the only Central European country to have a stable garment-manufacturing industry, parts of which are also still growing. Current difficulties and outlook Procurement with short transport distances in East Europe or the Mediterranean region is suffering from a shortage of qualified specialists and, in particular, trainees. Young people are moving to regions with attractive jobs and leisure facilities and working in the sewing industry is not seen as an attractive option. The prices for raw materials, especially cottons, are currently rising sharply and this is making the end products more expansive that wage increases in the sewing factories. The level of consumer demand for sustainable products is mounting and driving up the costs for ensuring real sustainability in both ecological and human terms. The batch sizes of production orders continue to fall. Factories must be converted from highly-efficient mass production to small product

Page 5 quantities that are changed frequently. This is a time consuming and, therefore, expensive process that also calls for more highly qualified employees and, possibly, for large companies to be broken up into smaller units. When it comes to technical issues, the knowledge of Central European players, i.e., designers and buyers, is not always up to the level necessary for a high-quality product. Dialog Textil-Bekleidung, Heimstetten, Germany, is currently working on a specification for training product managers. Today, buyers with a sense of responsibility are banking more than ever on binding, long-term relationships within a streamlined network, and on efficient checks on the sustainable process chain. Paradoxically, these are extremely conservative values in an extremely fast-moving sector. Texprocess from will also spotlight these changes in the apparel industry via its international, high-grade sourcing platform, Source-it!. On the one hand, Source-it! is an inexpensive opportunity for companies from all over the world to present their expertise and their facilities. On the other hand, it gives fashion labels the chance to obtain an overview of the most important production nations without having to travel far and wide. At around 500 companies will show the latest machines, plant, processes and services for the garment and textile-processing industries on around 50,000 square metres of exhibition space. The conceptual partner of Texprocess is VDMA Garment and Leather Technology. Around 25,000 trade visitors are expected.
