3 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 3 NEH Summer Stipends The National Endowment of the Humanities Summer Stipends provide $6,000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing. Recipients must work full-time on their projects for these two months, and may hold other research grants supporting the same project during this time. Summer Stipends normally support work carried out during the summer months, but arrangements can be made for other times of the year. For more information check out the website: guidelines/stipends.html#program or contact OSP. NASA EPSCoR Travel Grant Awards, each averaging $1,500, are for faculty and/ or students to spend up to three days at a NASA Center visiting with scientists. The purpose of this grant is to provide the first step in initiating contact and forging a direct partnership with NASA Center to develop possible research projects. Those faculty who have received Travel Grant Awards and have visited with NASA Center personnel will be eligible to apply for Research Initiation Grants, each averaging $21,000. Please refer to the NASA Mission Directorates for areas of research interest. Our NASA EPSCoR website is linked to the NASA Mission Directorates. For more information c h e c k o u t w e b s i t e : site_test/index.html Or contact Madeline Baugher (Madeline.Baugher@swosu. edu) NSF: Seeking Community Input DEADLINE: September 30, The purpose of this letter is to invite the research community to submit suggestions for topics to be considered for the FY 2012 Program Solicitation of the Office of Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation (EFRI). This is not a request for submission of a single research proposal idea but rather of an emerging transformational area of research and innovation. You may submit your ideas by accessing the following website and submitting your candidate topic idea along with a one-page description. Please follow the instructions provided. The deadline for submission is September 30, Grant Writing Workshop The Fundamentals of Grant Proposal Writing: Writing Winning Proposals, on Sept.20th and 21 st with instructor Robert Bradley at East Central University. 4 Compliance Corner: Report Scholarly and Academic Activity Please be reminded to report scholarly activity and academic activity. The Scholarly Activity and Academic Activity Report form can be found on the SWOSU web site under Sponsored Programs/Research and Grant or click on: Contact the Office of Sponsored Programs, ext. 7012, if you are unable to retrieve the report form. It is imperative to utilize the report form in order to record activity in an efficient and effective manner. Please note that the report form requires signatures. Also, please submit a copy of the activity, i.e. publication, paper presented, poster, newsletter with the report form. Submit the report form and copy of the activity to the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) periodically through out the academic year or by June 30 th for inclusion in this Fiscal Year Annual Report. Please do not wait until the last month to submit. Previous year reports may be viewed in the Office of Sponsored Programs or on the Sponsored Programs website; Contact Berva Pool at X7012 or Lori Gwyn at X7010 if you have questions regarding this reporting procedure. The Library is now taking information for the Digital Repository. Contact Philip Fitzsimmons. Proposal Development Tip of the Month In addition to conducting the usual literature review during the project development process, you should also review abstracts of recently funded projects in your project/research area. The abstracts often offer hints about what an agency is currently interested in funding as well as research trends in your field. Moreover, it is essential to know what has been awarded so that you can properly distinguish your project from others that have recently received funding. Perhaps the worst (preventable) comment one might receive from a reviewer is, Professor X at ABC University recently received a grant for a similar project, and we cannot recommend an award for what appears to be a duplicative project. Many federal agencies (and some state/private agencies) have Internet-based searchable databases containing the abstracts of recently-funded projects. You can usually search by keyword, competition, principal investigator (PI), institution and year of award. Links to the major federal agencies databases are listed below. Federal R&D Project Summaries (multiple agencies): National Endowment for the Humanities: National Institutes of Health (NIH Reporter): National Science Foundation: U.S. Department of Agriculture (CRIS database): U.S. Department of Education: U.S. Department of Health & Human Services:
