DESIGN The Process Anne Hawes Cottonwood High School
Design is: The process of selecting and organizing materials to fulfill a function. It is a conscious not instinctive process.
Factors That Influence Design: Function what purpose will the object serve? Materials of what will the object be made? Technology how will the object be made? Style Is the object appropriate and appealing to the user?
Function Purest form is creating something that has never existed. Most design today is, in reality, redesign or improving designs. Each change in a design should bring about improvement. FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION
Telephone Design Evolution:
Evolution of Cell Phone Design
Materials: Be open minded but practical. Don t avoid new materials. Select materials that are suitable and able to fulfill the intended use.
Technology Before industrial revolution everything was made be hand which limited what could be produced. Today we decide what we want then construct the machine to produce desired product.
Style Difficult to separate style from materials. Differ from one period to another, even from one home to another. Our lifestyles determine the style of interior design we use. Today s styles are an accumulation of past styles but include new materials and technologies.
Types of Design Structural Decorative
STRUCTURAL DESIGN STRUCTURAL DESIGN is the integral part of the structure itself when the structure and design cannot be separated. Good proportion and safety are important to structural design.
STRUCTURAL DESIGN
STRUCTURAL DESIGN
STRUCTURAL DESIGN
STRUCTURAL DESIGN
STRUCTURAL DESIGN
STRUCTURAL DESIGN
Activity: Pick out an object in the room. Determine its FUNCTION. How does its FORM FOLLOW ITS FUNCTION. Describe its STRUCTURAL DESIGN.
DECORATIVE DESIGN DECORATIVE DESIGN involves the application of color, line, texture, or pattern to an object. DECORATIVE DESIGN may be used to enhance a structural design or may be simply a work of art.
DECORATIVE DESIGN
SUCCESSFUL DECORATIVE DESIGN: Must be suitable for the intended use of the item. Must not obstruct its use or function.
SUCCESSFUL DECORATIVE DESIGN: Should be appropriate for the materials from which the article is made. Should accent the shape and form of the object. Should not make the object difficult to use. Materials should coordinate with intended use of the object.
SUCCESSFUL DECORATIVE DESIGN: Embellishment should be used to emphasize structural points. This can actually aid in the correct use of the object by calling attention to edges, handles, etc.
SUCCESSFUL DECORATIVE DESIGN: Decoration should be appropriate in size and amount to the object.
TYPES OF DECORATIVE DESIGN: NATURALISTIC reproductions of natural subjects.
TYPES OF DECORATIVE DESIGN: STYLIZED a representation that simplifies the subject to emphasize the basic qualities.
TYPES OF DECORATIVE DESIGN: ABSTRACT unrecognizable as a specific object or thing.
TYPES OF DECORATIVE DESIGN: GEOMETIC design made with the use of stripes, plaids and/or geometric shapes.
Applying What You Learned Identify the type of decorative design of this slide background. 1. Is it suitable for intended use and does it obstruct use or function? 2. Is it appropriate for the materials and does it coordinate with the intended use? 3. Does it accent the shape and form of the object? 4. Does it emphasize structural points and call attention to details? 5. Is it appropriate in size and amount to object?
Designing Business Cards On paper experiment with the four different type of decorative designs to create a design for a personal business card. Select two of the designs to use. On a 5 x 8 index card create 2 business card shapes, each 2 x 3. Space them evenly on the index card.
Designing Business Cards (cont.) On each of the cards recreate your design in an appropriate size and position. Use colored pencils to add color if desired. Leave space for your personal information. Use Professional lettering for your name and contact information.
ASSIGNMENT: Structural and Decorative Design 1. Using magazines to find large, clear pictures illustrating the following examples of design: a. Structural/Decorative building design b. Structural/Decorative room design c. Structural/Decorative furniture design 2. Identify the types of decorative design used in each picture.
ASSIGNMENT: Structural and Decorative Design 1. Mount each picture on ONE side of a sheet of black paper. 2. Using professional lettering discussed and practiced in class, label each picture with the appropriate title. 3. Place pictures in the correct order, as listed. 4. Design a section divider for your notebook that includes the title DESIGN PROCESS, your name, date and period. 5. Neatness and presentation are important.
